After each meeting, participants are required t write shrt jurnals, nting the language skills they have practiced and the tpics they have discussed. Over the curse f a term, each pair will meet with a supervising teacher three times; the teacher will assess whether the language exchange is running effectively. Students wh finish the prgramme successfully will be awarded ne academic credit.

Being a writer in the 21st century can keep yu in frnt f a screen fr s lng that it feels like the rm is sideways. Being a human with the Internet can mean hurs spent n scial media, scrlling and psting fr s lng that yur sense f reality actually becmes sideways. Three years ag, I started t search fr ways t deal with my anxiety. I had a brilliant idea, ne that felt cmpletely freign t peple like me: I’d g utside, t the real utside.
I grew up in the city, nt hiking r camping, s I knew nthing abut the utdrs. I have three kids with endless energy, s I figured I culd slve tw questins at nce. I wuld get a breather frm my jb and the kids wuld play with insects and realize there is nthing better than nature.
We drve t Great Falls, Virginia, where hundreds f peple n any given day spent hurs meandering thrugh the hillside and frest. The blue water pulsed, turning white and crashing pwerfully hundreds f feet beneath us. The kids held their breath as if they had seen magics. But it’s just nature, just the utside, and that had been there all alng. Since then, we’ve been fascinated.
Last summer I felt my hme’s walls clsing in, s I decided t g camping. I built my first fire. My kids watched my every mve, asking every ten minutes t help get mre branches and rast meat. Abut a mnth, my craving t take a break frm the city grew again. We camped tw mre times befre the cld came, each time seeing a bit mre f what nature had t ffer city flks.
Why did the authr decide t g utside three years ag?
      A. Because he was interested in nature. B. Because he hped t reduce anxiety.
      C. Because he fell in lve with camping. D. Because he was eager fr the utdrs.
      25. What des the authr want his kids t d?
      A. Enjy the beauty f nature.B. Stay away frm scial media.
      C. Learn t prtect themselves.D. Chse t d what they are fnd f.
      26. Hw did the kids feel abut the tur t Great Falls?

The human spine, r backbne, desn’t just help us stand up straight. Inside the spine is the spinal crd (脊髓), which carries imprtant infrmatin between the head and the lwer part f the bdy. This infrmatin mves arund as tiny, shrt bursts (短脉冲) f electricity which travel between the brain and the ther parts f the bdy.
The legs and feet send “sense” infrmatin t the brain, saying they’re hurt r ht, fr example. And the brain sends signals t the lwer bdy, perhaps telling the legs t walk, dance, r sit dwn. When smene's spinal crd is hurt, this means that infrmatin abut senses desn’t reach the brain frm the lwer bdy, and that cntrl signals can’t make it t the lwer bdy frm the brain. When that happens, a persn is “paralyzed”, and he can't mve his legs.
Nw scientists in Lausanne, Switzerland have given three paralyzed men the ability t walk again. T help them walk again, the men had peratins. A special device was placed directly n the lwer part f their spinal crd. This “ implant”cntained sixteen electrdes. Electrdes are small bjects that electricity can pass thrugh. The researchers made sure the electrdes n the implant were lined up with the bundles f nerves (神经末梢) that cntrl the leg muscles.
T begin with, the scientists cntrlled the implants frm a tablet cmputer. Just hurs after the implants were first used, all three men were taking steps, with supprt. In the past, scientists have had sme success with similar implants in the lwer spine. Sme patients have even trained themselves ver mnths t be able t walk.
This research is different. The patient’s brain isn’t sending “walking” messages t their legs. Instead, the tablet tells the implant t send the walking messages. The researchers used cmputers t create patterns f mvement that wuld wrk well with each patient. The patient then uses the tablet t chse the pattern they want. That triggers (触发) the implant and the muscles mve in the chsen way. Over time, the men were able t walk entirely n their wn.
What is the functin f the spinal crd?
      A. It helps us stand up straight.
      B. It sends instructins t the bdy.
      C. It cnnects different parts f the bdy.
      D. It delivers infrmatin between different parts f the bdy.
      29. What happened t the three paralyzed men?
      A. The peratins enabled them t walk again.
      B. The scientists put a special device next t their spines.
      C. They culd feel the electricity passing thrugh their bdies.
      D. They replaced the nerves that cntrl the leg muscles with electrdes.
      30. Accrding t the text, hw is this research different frm the ne in the past?
      A. The psitin f the implant is changed.
      B. The patients need mre time t recver.
      C. The patients are able t walk independently sn after the peratin.
      D. The instructins t walk are given by the implant rather than the brain.
      31. Which f the fllwing can be the best title fr the text?
      A. What Is Respnsible fr Paralysis
      B. Hw Des Spine Wrk in Our Bdy
      C. Spine Implant Lets Paralyzed Peple Walk Again
      D. Scientists Use Tablet Cmputer t Cntrl Patients’ Mvement

Abut 900 miles ff the cast f Chile, scientists have discvered an underwater muntain hme t primitive ecsystems that they believe hst at least 20 previusly unknwn species.
The team mapped a 1.9-mile tall seamunt, which is part f the Nazca Ridge (NR), an underwater muntain range in the sutheast Pacific Ocean. The ptentially new species that have yet t be fficially cnfirmed include a sea urchin, starfish and a squat lbster. The findings will be submitted t the Ocean Census, which prmtes the discvery f new sea species fr the cnfirmatin. The team als dcumented rare sightings f the delightfully named Casper ctpus and recrded a live squid, a creature that had nly previusly been studied frm a few dead samples.
The discveries are the result f a 28-day expeditin (考察) t the NR, led by Schmidt Ocean Institute. Befre this missin, the height and the exact lcatin f the muntain range weren’t knwn, researchers said. New technlgy allwed researchers t study the cmplex depth with greater accuracy than what was previusly pssible. Researchers used a remtely perated vehicle named SuBastian t gather images t map the seaflr.
Only 26% f the seaflr has been mapped with such high reslutin, said Schmidt Ocean Institute's directr Jytika Virmani. “Thrugh the map, each expeditin let us have a better understanding f the unknwn seabed and made us fcus mre n the lives n ur hme planet,” she said. The Institute's tw prir expeditins t the NR and the neighburing Salasy Gómez Ridge (SyGR), in January and February, 2024, led t the discvery f 150 new species.
Bth muntain ranges are in the high seas and lie utside f any cuntry. They’re being threatened since there are the effects f climate change, plastic pllutin, verfishing and ptential deep-sea mining. We hpe the regin cntaining the NR and the SyGR is a candidate t becme a sea prtected area that culd prtect sea life frm activities such as cmmercial fishing r il drilling. We hpe the data gathered frm these expeditins will help infrm future plicies, safeguarding these undevelped envirnments fr future generatins.
What will the team d fr the ptentially new species?
      A. Find a seaflr fr them.
      B. Help d species identificatin.
      C. Return them t the NR.
      D. Dcument them fr dead samples.
      33. What can be inferred abut the NR?
      A. It had been well-studied befre the expeditin.
      B. Researchers had knwn its rare species befre.
      C. Researchers tuched its every crner in persn.
      D. New technlgy helped explre it fruitfully.
      34. What des the last paragraph mainly tell us abut the NR and the SyGR?
      A. Their ecsystems are a great cncern.
      B. They bth became sea prtected areas.
      C. They are free frm deep-sea mining activities.
      D. Their lcatins prmte cmmercial fishing.
      35. In which clumn f a magazine can we prbably read this passage?
      A. Turism and Culture. B. Sprts and Fitness.
      C. Nature and Bidiversity. D. Histry and Traditins.

38 Write ntes and explain the cntent in simple language that a five-year-ld can fllw. If yu’d rather avid actually teaching smene, yu can just teach it t an imaginary audience. But it wrks much better if yu use real peple. They’ll be able t let yu knw when smething isn’t clear.
While teaching yu may discver gaps in yur understanding. 39 Yu can g ver yur ntes, reread yur bks, r seek external help and this will ensure yu have a cmplete understanding f the cntext befre yu mve n.
Nw that yu fully grasp the cncept, test yur understanding by trying t teach it t anther persn. This will help yu identify any remaining areas f uncertainty yu need t revisit.

The Feynman Technique is a great way fr kids and grwn-ups t learn. It is mentally demanding. Yu need t actively think abut the prblem instead f passively reading r listening t smene else.
Hwever, with great effrts in mastering this methd, yu'll see yur learning results imprve quicker than ever befre.
      B. This helps the infrmatin stick in yur mind better.
      C. Teach it t a five-year-ld, wh wuld give yu direct feedback.
      D. Yur curisity abut it will determine the pace f yur learning.
      E. Once yu have chsen a tpic, yu can teach it t smene else.

      Paragraph 7
      The Step Pyramid f Djser
      1. The pyramids are the mst famus mnuments f ancient Egypt and still hld enrmus interest fr peple in the present day. These grand, impressive tributes t the memry f the Egyptian kings have becme linked with the cuntry even thugh ther cultures, such as the Chinese and Mayan, als built pyramids. The evlutin f the pyramid frm has been written and argued abut fr centuries. Hwever, there is n questin that, as far as Egypt is cncerned, it began with ne mnument t ne king designed by ne brilliant architect: the Step Pyramid f Djser at Saqqara.
      2. Djser was the first king f the Third Dynasty f Egypt and the first t build in stne. Prir t Djser's reign, tmbs were rectangular mnuments made f dried clay brick, which cvered undergrund passages where the deceased persn was buried. Fr reasns which remain unclear, Djser's main fficial, whse name was Imhtep, cnceived f building a taller, mre impressive tmb fr his king by stacking stne slabs n tp f ne anther, prgressively making them smaller, t frm the shape nw knwn as the Step Pyramid. Djser is thught t have reigned fr 19 years, but sme histrians and schlars attribute a much lnger time fr his rule, wing t the number and size f the mnuments he built.
      3. The Step Pyramid has been thrughly examined and investigated ver the last century, and it is nw knwn that the building prcess went thrugh many different stages. Histrian Marc Van de Mierp cmments n this, writing “Much experimentatin was invlved, which is especially clear in the cnstructin f the pyramid in the center f the cmplex. It had several plans … befre it became the first Step Pyramid in histry, piling six levels n tp f ne anther … The weight f the enrmus mass was a challenge fr the builders, wh placed the stnes at an inward incline in rder t prevent the mnument breaking up.”
      4. When finally cmpleted, the Step Pyramid rse 62 meters high and was the tallest structure f its time. The cmplex in which it was built was the size f a city in ancient Egypt and included a temple, curtyards, shrines, and living quarters fr the priests. It cvered a regin f 16 hectares and was surrunded by a wall 10.5 meters high. The wall had 13 false drs cut int it with nly ne true entrance cut int the suth-east crner; the entire wall was then ringed by a trench 750 meters lng and 40 meters wide. The false drs and the trench were incrprated int the cmplex t discurage unwanted visitrs. If smene wished t enter, he r she wuld have needed t knw in advance hw t find the lcatin f the true pening in the wall. Djser was s prud f his accmplishment that he brke the traditin f having nly his wn name n the mnument and had Imhtep's name carved n it as well.
      5. The burial chamber f the tmb, where the king’s bdy was laid t rest, was dug beneath the base f the pyramid, surrunded by a vast maze f lng tunnels that had rms ff them t discurage rbbers. One f the mst mysterius discveries fund inside the pyramid was a large number f stne vessels. Over 40,000 f these vessels, f varius frms and shapes, were discvered in strerms f the pyramid’s undergrund passages. They are inscribed with the names f rulers frm the First and Secnd Dynasties f Egypt and made frm different kinds f stne. There is n agreement amng schlars and archaelgists n why the vessels were placed in the tmb f Djser r what they were suppsed t represent. The archaelgist Jean-Philippe Lauer, wh excavated mst f the pyramid and cmplex, believes they were riginally stred and then given a “prper burial'” by Djser in his pyramid t hnr his predecessrs. There are ther histrians, hwever, wh claim the vessels were dumped int the shafts as yet anther attempt t prevent grave rbbers frm getting t the king’s burial chamber.
      6. Unfrtunately, all f the precautins and intricate design f the undergrund netwrk did nt prevent ancient rbbers frm finding a way in. Djser’s grave gds, and even his bdy, were stlen at sme pint in the past and all archaelgists fund were a small number f his valuables verlked by the thieves. There was enugh left thrughut the pyramid and its cmplex, hwever, t astnish and amaze the archaelgists wh excavated it.
      7. Egyptlgist Mirslav Verner writes, “Few mnuments hld a place in human histry as significant as that f the Step Pyramid in Saqqara … It can be said withut exaggeratin that this pyramid cmplex cnstitutes a milestne in the evlutin f mnumental stne architecture in Egypt and in the wrld as a whle.” The Step Pyramid was a revlutinary advance in architecture and became the archetype which all the ther great pyramid builders f Egypt wuld fllw.
