The “pen science” cncept is gaining mre fllwers, especially thrugh the effrts f United Natins Educatinal, Scientific and Cultural Organizatin (UNESCO). Over the past several years, the Organizatin has been cnsulting n hw science can becme mre cllabrative (协作的), transparent, accessible, equitable and inclusive. At the end f last year, UNESCO published a reprt n the current status f this effrt.
UNESCO’s reprt described several examples f psitive initiatives, such as in research cllabratin, pen-access scientific publishing and public engagement in science. Fr example, in 2020, the Brazilian gvernment launched the Natinal Platfrm f Research Infrastructure, a digital platfrm in which scientific institutins can register their available facilities and make them available t researchers utside their rganizatin. The Eurpean Cmmissin, based in Brussels, was an early supprter f pen science. Between 2002 and 2020, it increased its funding fr scietal engagement prjects frm €88 millin t €462 millin.
Other indicatrs are less rsy, hwever. Arund three-quarters f publicatins in pen-access databases are in just six languages — with nearly half being in English alne. And in spite f sme f the prgress mentined, verall the reprt finds that scientific institutins, such as universities, natinal science academies and jurnals, are struggling t include cmmunities, in all their diversity, in the prcess f creating scientific knwledge itself.
The United Natins (UN)’s Sustainable Develpment Gals (SDGs) are the best attempt t map a pathway twards a better future, and a mre pen apprach t science culd have a larger part t play in achieving them.
That attempt needs as much help as it can get: Mnitring SDGs indicatrs is ne bvius way that citizen scientists can help. Sme f the largest gaps in the cllectin f relevant SDGs data are in lw-and middle-incme cuntries, which is where citizen research can really make a difference.
The UNESCO reprt shines a much-needed light n sme prmising develpments in pen science. The challenge will be hw t accumulate (累积) individual examples f gd practice int smething similar t a critical mass, s that, in cases such as mnitring the SDGs, they can be made use f t get the wrld t where it needs t be.
8.Hw did the Brazilian gvernment cntribute t pen science?
A.It made Internet mre accessible wrldwide.
      B.It set up a digital resurce-sharing platfrm.
C.It funded Eurpe’s scietal engagement prjects.
D.It translated publicatins int multiple languages.
9.What is paragraph 3 mainly abut?
      A.Examples f sme new initiatives.
      B.Indicatrs f a prmising science field.
      C.Prblems f current pen science.
      D.Difficulties f creating scientific knwledge.
10.What is a suggested way t help achieve SDGs?
A.Helping the pr increase their incmes.
B.Creating city maps arund the wrld.
C.Prviding mre supprt fr nline technlgy.
D.Encuraging citizens t engage in science.
11.What can we learn frm the text?
A.There is a lng way t g fr glbal pen science.

Thermal pllutin is a rapid change in temperature in a natural bdy f water. This pllutin is mst ften caused by heated discharge(排放) frm an industrial facility r anther human activity. Thermal pllutin is a grwing cncern, especially with climate change wrsening increases in water temperature frm pwer plants, industry, agriculture, and ther human surces. A 2016 study fund that half f the glbal freshwater heat discharges cme frm nuclear and cal plants frm the 1970s and 1980s. Sme lder pwer plants that emply nce-thrugh cling are shutting dwn as aging equipment and increasing restrictins n air and water pllutin, water cnsumptin, and thermal discharge decrease prfitability and increase duty.
In the U. S., thermal pllutin is regulated by the federal Clean Water Act, which requires states t set limits fr thermal discharges frm pwer plants t prtect aquatic rganisms and wildlife. Pwer plants must meet temperature discharge standards t qualify fr the permits, r alternatively, prve that the discharge temperature has n harmful envirnmental effects. Hwever, this desn’t happen ften in practice.
There is nw a shift away frm nce-thrugh cling—nt nly because f thermal pllutin but because f the verall pressure that water-intensive prcesses place n aquatic and marine life. In 2010, Califrnia issued a regulatin t phase ut(逐步淘汰) nce-thrugh cling at castal pwer plants that use cean water.
Existing and emerging technlgies prvide ther means f reducing thermal pllutin frm pwer plants and ther industrial surces. These include reducing the amunt f water released by such facilities and capturing heated wastewater fr ther purpses t reduce discharges. Whatever they are, they are wrth trying.

      C.They are irrespnsible.D.They are t dependent.
14.What can we infer abut America’s Clean Water Act?
A.It fails t generate desirable effects.
B.It sets an example fr ther cuntries.
C.It gives mre freedm t pwer plants.
D.It has the same limit n discharges natinwide.

B.T intrduce innvative ways t get clean energy.

D.T shw the negative impacts f thermal pllutin.
