I never thught basketball wuld change my life until Cach Wilsn tk ver ur struggling high schl team. We were disrganized, lazy, and knwn mre fr ur lsses than ur skills.
On his first day, Cach Wilsn made us run until ur legs burned, and when sme players cmplained, he simply said, “Quit nw, r cmmit t being better.” A few walked away, but the rest f us stayed — maybe because n ne had ever expected much frm us befre. Our legs hurt, but we kept running. Fr the first time, smene saw we culd be better — and that made us want t prve him right.
Cach Wilsn didn’t just care abut basketball. He made us clean up ur language and even taught us hw t shake hands prperly. He never let ur bad habits slide. Over time, we stpped being selfish players and started becming real teammates — learning t respect each ther, mve tgether, and play as ne.
One day, after a tiring practice, he gathered us arund and tld us a stry: A man saw a butterfly struggling t break free frm its ccn (茧). Feeling srry fr it, he carefully cut the ccn pen. The butterfly came ut easily — but its wings were weak, and it culd never fly. The struggle was necessary t make it strng.
The lessn stuck. Slwly, we imprved — nt just as players, but as students, as teammates, and as peple. We started winning games, but mre imprtantly, we carried urselves differently.
We finally made it t the champinship game. Hwever, in the furth quarter, smething unexpected happened: my knee tk a hit. Pain sht up my leg as I hit the flr. Cach Wilsn came t me, his face unreadable. “Yu’re dne,” he said, signaling t the bench. “N.” The butterfly’s wings flashed in my mind. “Dn’t ... dn’t cut the ccn pen,” I said.
Cach Wilsn ndded with a mix f heartache and pride in his eyes. I stepped back nt the curt. I still felt a dull pain in my knee. Yet fr the first time, I std taller-as if smething pwerful was lifting me up.

Like humans, lts f wild animals like t spend time tgether and scialize. Linesses (母狮子) will eat tgether after hunting, and elephants usually live in herds (群)f between eight and 100. Hwever, accrding t a cllectin f recent studies, things are different when sme animals get lder.
One f these studies lked at huse sparrws (家麻雀) n Lundy, a small island ff the cast f Devn, England. The study fcused n huse sparrws because they can adjust their lifestyles successfully t suit different envirnments. The research revealed that lder huse sparrws have smaller scial circles than yunger nes.
Dr Jamie Dunning, wh was invlved in the research, said, “It culd be because lder birds dn’t need t make friends fr the same reasns that yunger nes d. In their early years, these birds depend n regular interactins t discver reliable fd surces and identify ptential threats. These cnstant scial activities serve as their guide thrugh the cmplexities f yuth. Older birds already knw these things, s they dn’t need t scialize as much. They can chse carefully wh they spend time with, sticking with their clse friends and saving their energy fr mre imprtant things.”
Anther study lked at a herd f red deer living n Rum, a Scttish island. As the females gt lder, they became less sciable. This wasn’t because they didn’t like the ther deer, thugh. The research shws this behavir actually helps prtect them frm getting sick frm a particular kind f wrm. These wrms are small creatures that live ff ther animals, smetimes making them ill. The deer are mre likely t becme weak as they get lder, but they can reduce the risk f cming acrss the wrm by spending less time with ther deer.
The cllectin f studies cvered lts f species, including mnkeys and insects. Overall, it shwed hw aging animals changed their scial behavir, which affected their scial netwrks. In the future, scientists will examine hw the bserved patterns f scial behavir changes in aging animals might relate t similar prcesses in peple. The research may lead t new appraches t supprting elderly ppulatins by understanding when reduced sciability represents nrmal adaptatin and when interventin might be beneficial.
      8. Why did researchers chse huse sparrws as subjects?
      A. They have a shrt life cycle.B. They have a stable ppulatin.
      C. They shw great adaptability.D. They live in a clsed ecsystem.
      9. What did Dr Jamie Dunning imply abut huse sparrws?
      A. Their scial circles keep expanding.
      B. Their scial cmpetitin declines with age.
      C. Their scial activities depend n the lcal envirnment.
      D. Their scial interactin frequency is determined by survival skills.
      10. Why are lder red deer less sciable?
      A. T save energy.B. T secure fd surces.
      C. T prevent infectius diseases.D. T avid cnflicts with yunger deer.
      11. What will scientists fcus n next?
      A. Explring human applicatins.B. Including diverse bird species.
      C. Tracking animal aging prcesses.D. Prtecting ld animals.
      D
Fds that awaken a sense f nstalgia (怀旧)and cmfrt are imprtant cnsideratins in prepared meals aimed at lder adults, accrding t new research.
“We want t help the prepared fd industry prduce attractive, healthy meals fr lder adults,” said Carlyn Rss, a prfessr. “Malnutritin (营养不良) is quite prevalent in peple ver 60 because fd may be available, but they wn’t eat it if they dn’t like it. We want t walk a line where fd is tasty, cnvenient, and full f nutrients.”
In a recently published paper, Rss and her team develped desirable and nutritius dairy-rich breakfasts and desserts fr lder adults. They asked 81 peple, with an average age f 71, t taste tw breakfasts and tw desserts. Scientists then asked a series f questins abut the meals and individual eating habits.
Rss said, “We asked what peple thught abut when it came t fd and nstalgia. Many respnses were tied t a persn, like their grandmther’s ckies. If a prduct awakened mre nstalgia, then we fund that they liked it mre.”
“Studying fd nstalgia is a newer field f fd science,” Rss said, “but examining cmfrt fd is a bit mre established.” Preference can vary widely due t cultural differences. In this study, whenever peple labeled smething as a cmfrt fd, they liked it mre. One ingredient was cmmnly placed in the cmfrt fd categry: cheese. “Participants’ perceived cmfrt level decreased if we decreased the flavr level,” Rss said. “When the participants said there wasn’t enugh cheese flavr in the meal, then the cmfrt assciated with the meal decreased.”
The research team als fund that fd texture (口感) is imprtant, which is nt a new cnclusin. “It’s nt ne specific texture that matters; it’s a variety f textures,” Rss said. “Having a diet with a lt f texture variety, including textures like crispy (酥脆的) and hard, alng with sft and creamy fds, really std ut. Fr lder adults, wh may nt be able t eat the same hard and crispy fds they nce culd, keeping as much texture variety as pssible is still imprtant.”
      12. What des the underlined wrd “prevalent” in paragraph 2 mean?
      A. Cnstant.B. Sudden.C. Cmmn. D. Different.
      13. What mainly affects peple’s fd chices accrding t the study?
      A. Fd textures.B. Fd ingredients.C. Individual habits.D. Persnal memries.
      14. What can we learn frm paragraph 5?
      A. Age influences peple’s taste.
      B. Texture matters mre than flavr.
      C. Less cheese makes fd less cmfrting.
      D. Cmfrt fd is linked t a sense f nstalgia.
      15. What might Rss agree with accrding t the last paragraph?
      A. Old peple shuld stick t their favrite texture.
      B. A variety f textures make fd mre appealing.
      C. Old peple shuld avid hard and crispy textures.
      D. Sft and creamy textures are imprtant fr peple.
