When the lcal nnprfit Blind Industries & Services f Maryland, r BISM, reached ut t Jhns Hpkins University last year, they asked fr ne thing: a printer that adds braille(盲文) writing t beer labels.
A grup f engineering students delivered it. Because BISM is the state’s largest emplyer f blind and lw-visined wrkers, the students wanted t design an pen hardware prduct that is easy t perate, unlike ther printers that enclse their wrking cmpnents behind hard casing.
Starting in September, the thughtfully designed and newly built machine is capable f punching(打孔) braille text int plastic beer labels as well as card stck, glssy mailers, and ther materials that cmmercial braille-friendly printers are presently unable t accmmdate.
"Having pen hardware that allws peple t tuch all the cmpnents was imprtant," said Catherine Pllard, a prject team member. "We really tk int cnsideratin wh wuld be perating the machine and hw they were ging t use it. Fr this t be a functinal prduct, the user experience is paramunt."
The students als develped easy-t-update sftware that allws their printer t cmmunicate with the braille wrd prcessr and Phtshp design sftware that the nnprfit uses in its ffice.
"We culdn’t have made it withut BISM as a prject spnsr. They gave us user feedback (反馈) frm the peple wh are mst interested in the machine and wrked clsely with us every step f the way," said anther team member Gabriella Hu.
The students have already printed 400 labels fr Blind Spt, a beer invented by Baltimre’s wn Checkerspt Brewing Cmpany in cperatin with BISM as part f an annual fundraiser fr thse with visin lss. Zhang Peidng, a prfessr frm the Ocean University f China, has been diving fr 16 years, explring the underwater "grasslands" cvered with seagrass. These seagrass beds are essential habitats fr sea life. Hwever, human activities and changes in the envirnment have caused a big drp in seagrass beds arund the wrld. In 2008, Zhang and his clleague Li Wenta fund a wrrying situatin in Rngcheng Bay, a key area fr seagrass beds in China. The number f verwintering swans had drpped sharply because f the lss f seagrass, a main fd surce.

Their effrts were supprted by a Weihai-based cmpany, which prvided free wrkshps, ffice space, husing, and wrkers fr the research team. The cmpany’s general manager nted that many emplyees, being children f fishermen, were eager t cntribute t the restratin effrts.
After years f hard wrk, the research team develped a way t grw eelgrass seedlings artificially. By understanding the grwth patterns and the best seed cllectin times, they managed t reduce the grwing perid frm nearly three mnths t just 10 days. The team als created several sets f equipment with independent intellectual prperty rights t imprve planting efficiency.
Over the past 16 years, the research team has taken part in mre than 10 seagrass bed restratin prjects in China, cvering ver 1,333 hectares in the Yellw and Bhai Seas. Their effrts have led t the recvery f mre than 40% f the seagrass beds in Swan Lake, attracting mre swans t the area. The restratin technlgy has als been used in ther prvinces, such as Hebei and Lianing, significantly imprving lcal water quality and bidiversity.
The team’s cmmitment t seagrass bed restratin has brught new life t underwater ecsystems and set a psitive example fr eclgical cnservatin effrts glbally. Philsphers have a bad reputatin fr expressing themselves in a dry and bring way. The ideals fr mst philsphical writing are precisin, clarity, and the srt f cnceptual analysis that leaves n hair un-split.
There is nthing wrng with clarity, precisin, and the like - but this isn’t the nly way t d philsphy. Outside academic jurnals, abstract philsphical ideas are ften expressed thrugh literature, cinema, and sng. There’s nthing that grabs attentin like a gd stry, and there are sme great philsphical stries that delight and engage, rather than putting the reader t sleep.
One f the great things abut this is that, unlike frmal philsphy, which tries t be very clear, stries dn’t wear their meanings n their sleeve-they require interpretatin, and ften express cnflicting ideas fr the reader t wrestle with.
Cnsider what philsphers call the metaphysics (形而上学) f race-an area f philsphy that explres the questin f whether r nt race is real. There are three main psitins that yu can take n these questins. Yu might think that a persn’s race is written in their genes (a psitin knwn as "bilgical realism"). Or yu might think f race as scially real, like days f the week r currencies ("scial cnstructinism"). Finally, yu might think that races are unreal-that they’re mre like leprechauns(一种魔法精灵) than they are like Thursdays r dllars ("anti-realism").
A great example f a stry taking n race is Gerge S. Schuyler’s nvel Black N Mre. In the bk, a Black scientist named Crkman invents a prcedure that makes Black peple visually indistinguishable frm Whites. Thusands f African Americans flck t Crkman’s Black N Mre clinics and pay him their hard-earned cash t underg the prcedure. White racists can n lnger distinguish thse peple wh are "really" White frm thse wh merely appear t be White. In a final episde, Crkman discvers that new Whites are actually a whiter shade f pale than thse wh were brn that way, which kicks ff a trend f sunbathing t darken ne’s skin-darkening it s as t lk mre White.
Philsphically rich stries like this bring mre technical wrks t life. They are stries t think with.
32. What is the impressin frmal philsphy leaves n peple accrding t Paragraph 1?
A. Dull. B. Engaging.
C. Thught-prvking. D. Depressing.
33. Which is the distinctin f philsphical stries?
A. They give precise cnceptual analysis.
B. They interpret ideas frmally and clearly.
C. They seldm express cnflicting ideas.
D. They stimulate interest and critical thinking.
34. Which categry might "Black N Mre" in Paragraph 5 fall int?
A. Racial issues caused by skin clrs.
B. A sciety view n race and self-image.
C. Black peple accepted by the white sciety.
D. The rigin f sunbathing amng white peple.
35. What is the best title fr the text?
A. Stries Made Easy B. Psitins in Philsphy
C. Stries t Think with D. Nature f Philsphical Writing

I lve thinking abut teams. I lve thinking abut hw t create an envirnment that will make a grup f peple want t be n the team. I lve cnsidering the best ways t build a great team.
Here is ne f my favrite team cncepts: the sign f a great team is nt the absence f cnflict. Rather, the sign f a great team is the ability t reslve cnflict. 36 But ur ability t cnsistently reslve that cnflict impacts the kind f team we have mre than any ther variable. If we learn hw t reslve the cnflict, the team will be tgether fr very lng.
Nw, the "hw" is the hardest part f cnflict reslutin. 37 But in my experience, the key aspect f cnsistent cnflict reslutin cmes dwn t listening and respect. When we listen t each ther and respect the ppsing perspective (视角), we can have reasnable dialgue. 38
That we listen t and respect ther perspectives des nt mean we always have t agree. 39 That’s fine. But simple listening skills and demnstratins f respect are at the heart f cnsistent and reasnable cnflict reslutin.
Great teams are nt n the same page all the time. 40 S when yu are trying t build a great team r when yu think yu have ne and want t keep it great, spend sme time thinking abut hw yu will handle thse difficult mments when the team is nt n the same page.
A. We can still agree t disagree.
B. But great teams knw hw t get there.
C. The best relatinships take time and effrt.
D. It is always cmplex and ften requires multiple steps.
E. Then we are likely t be n ur way t eventual reslutin.
F. Peple n a team ften wrk tgether twards a cmmn gal.
G. That is because even the best teams unavidably have cnflict.
