“Hw many times have yu heard, r maybe yu' ve said t yurself,‘I hate small talk’? “asks Kyle Kellams, a Fayetteville, Arkansas, news directr and radi hst. But, he believes that it can serve as the gateway t real understanding.
One “small talk” questin that he frequently asks guests in the KUAF studi is: “What’s the first mvie yu ever saw in a mvie theater?” Part f the reasn he pses this particular questin is technical—— he's testing the sund level f peple's vices n the micrphne—— but that's nt all. He says, “Smetimes that questin leads t an interesting cnversatin.”
Here's an example f what he means. One guest's answer was Jaws, which surprised him because he guessed she must have been quite yung at the time. He recalls, “S I asked her, ‘Wh tk yu as a kid t see Jaws?’ She said, ‘My dad.’ Well, that led us t a brief cnversatin abut sharks, abut fear, and abut, fr her, grwing up the kid f divrced(离婚的) parents. Then we went away and had the regular cnversatin abut the tpic we were scheduled t, and I think it went slightly better because we had actually made a cnnectin.”
By “small talk”, Kellams adds, “I’m nt talking abut,‘Hey, isn't that strange weather?’ fllwed by a few mments f awkward silence.” Yu shuld prbably als avid asking “What d yu d?” since that questin tends t keep things at a shallw level, t. Instead, yu can brrw Kellams mvie- theater questin; r cme up with yur wn. Maybe it’s “What’s the first bk yu remember reading by yurself?” r “What’s yur favrite vegetable?” Think abut what culd draw ut vivid memries r passinate pinins, r what yu'd be genuinely interested in finding ut.
But remember, yu' re nt there t simply cllect their answer and depart. Yu' re there t receive it like the gift that it is, and respnd whleheartedly. As radi hst Celeste Headlee likes t say, “A gd cnversatin is like a game f catch.” Just as yu wuldn't interrupt catching and thrwing a ball r Frisbee(飞盘) with a friend t check yur phne r lk fr smene mre interesting, cmmit yurself t fllwing the small talk wherever it may lead.
      24. Why des Kellams use small talk in cnversatins?
      A. It reveals a persnal detail.
B It can raise micrphne levels.
      C. It helps build a genuine cnnectin.
      D. It invlves questins abut mvies.
      25. What can be inferred abut the mvie Jaws?

      B. It's a children's mvie.
      C. It cntains terrifying scenes.
      D. It's abut animal cnservatin.
      26. What des Kellams think f small talk abut the weather?
      A. It takes up t much time.
      B. It makes ne feel unhappy.
      C. It fails t test ne's memry.
      D. It keeps the talk n the surface.

When did yu last sit dwn fr a meal withut any distractins(分心)? Many f us multitask during meals, checking scial media, watching TV, r even wrking. Accrding t a study led by Stephen Lee Murphy, PhD, f Ghent University, this habit f distracted eating culd lead t vercnsumptin.
The study investigates “hednic(享乐的) cnsumptin”, where we buy and use prducts fr the pleasure they bring rather than necessity. “On any given day, a persn may take great pleasure frm ne r mre f these activities, yet peple ften cnsume mre hednic gds than they want r than is gd fr them,” said Murphy.
T understand hw distractin affects ur enjyment, researchers cnducted an experiment with 122 participants, mstly yung adults. Participants were asked t eat their lunch under tw different cnditins: n distractin, and high distractin. After their meal, they reprted their level f enjyment, satisfactin, and desire fr mre satisfactin. The results were telling. Participants wh ate while distracted reprted lwer enjyment and satisfactin, leading t increased snacking later in the day and a heightened desire fr further satisfactin.
Murphy called this effect “hednic cmpensatin”. When we are distracted, we experience less enjyment frm ur activities, which drives us t seek mre cnsumptin t make up fr the shrtfall.
“Overcnsumptin ften results frm a lack f self- cntrl.” Murphy explained. “Hwever, ur findings suggest vercnsumptin may als ften be driven by the simple human desire t reach a certain level f enjyment frm an activity. When distractin gets in the way, it's likely we may try t make up fr it by cnsuming mre.”
In a wrld where distractins are unavidable, learning t be present and fully engaged in ur pleasurable activities might be the key t enjying them mre and cnsuming less. S, next time yu sit dwn fr a meal, put away yur phne, turn ff the TV, and enjy each bite. Yur mind and bdy will thank yu.
      28. Accrding t Murphy, what is the prblem with “hednic cnsumptin”?
      A. It reduces enjyment.
      B. It's a waste f time.
      C. Peple d t much f it.
      D. Peple knw little abut it.
      29. Which f the fllwing shws the result f the experiment?
      A. N distractin, n satisfactin.
      B. High distractin, less satisfactin.
      C. Less distractin, less satisfactin.
      D. High distractin, mre satisfactin.
      30. What des the authr recmmend t reduce hednic vercnsumptin?
      A. Trying t have mre self- cntrl.
      B. Aviding eating pleasurable fds.
      C. Fcusing fully n cnsumptin experiences.
      D. Reducing the amunt f fd cnsumed.
      31. What is the main tpic discussed in the text?
      A. Hw vercnsumptin des harm t health.
      B. Hw distracted eating leads t vercnsumptin.
      C. Hw we can increase enjyment while eating.
      D. Hw we can cnsume less fd during the meal.

“Insects have persnalities,” says Melinda Babits, a PhD student at the University f Debrecen.
In her wrk with insects, Babits defines “persnality” as “cnsistent individual differences”. Cnsistencies in individual behavir patterns can be bserved in the same insects acrss time r acrss different situatins.
T understand the difference between human persnality and insect persnality, think abut what persnality means t yu in terms f a dg r cat—— yu think abut their playfulness, energy and level f attachment—— in cntrast t what it means in yur friends— yu think abut their traits(特质) that stand ut when yu first meet them, and the ways they cmmunicate.
In her research, Babits puts firebugs(红蝽) int an experimental cntainer. A cmputer prgram then analyzes the mvement patterns f the individuals t see hw much the insects have explred the cntainer and interacted with the nvel bjects. Three days later, the same individuals are put int the cntainer again t see if their behavir remains cnsistent.
Tw traits f a firebug's persnality are activity and explrativeness. “These are usually related. With activity, yu can see hw much time the individual spends explring its surrundings,” Babits explains, “Explrativeness is mre cnnected t the space—— sme individuals just like explring a small sectin f the cntainer, while thers g arund trying t explre the nks and crannies.”
Anther trait is sciability. T assess it in firebugs, Babits maps the insects' scial netwrks. If tw firebugs are in the same lcatin at the same time and have a physical interactin, then they are cnsidered in the same scial netwrk. Like humans, sme firebugs are sciable and thers prefer t keep t themselves.
Diverse persnalities culd be the key t survival fr insect species. “In different situatins, different persnality types are beneficial fr the grup r fr the species itself. If there are individuals wh are mre explrative, they can discver new fd surces,” says Babits. “Understanding insect persnality can give us insight int ther aspects f that insect's behavir such as habitat expansin and scial rganizatin.”
Next time an ant r fly pays yu a visit, just remember: “What yu see is indeed a truly unique individual,” says Babits.
      32. Why des the authr mentin “a dg r cat” in paragraph 3?
      A. T supprt Babits' definitin f persnality.
      B. T help readers better understand insect persnality.
      C. T shw the difference between pets and insects.
      D. T cmpare human persnality with animal persnality.
      33. Why des Babits put the same firebugs int the cntainer again after three days?
      A. T test the firebugs' memry.
      B. T cnfirm the firebugs' persnality.
C T analyze the firebugs' mvement patterns.
      D. T train the firebugs t frm their persnality.
      34. What des the underlined part “the nks and crannies” in paragraph 5 imply?
      A. The firebugs are active in learning new tasks.
      B. The firebugs tend t frm different scial grups.
      C. The firebugs are lking fr different fd surces.
      D. The firebugs like explring every part f the cntainer.
      35. What trait, accrding t the text, can mst likely help insects find fd?
      A. Explrativeness.B. Energy.
      C. Playfulness.D. Sciability.
