Suzanne Heywd was just seven years ld when her parents pulled her ut f schl. The British family went
n a vyage arund the wrld. While her parents thught it was the trip f a lifetime and ften described the

cntinued sailing. Finally, despite the gaps in her educatin, Suzanne landed a spt at Oxfrd University, and after
saving up mney she’d earned wrking n a farm, Suzanne bught a ne-way plane ticket back t the UK.
Since ging public with her stry, Suzanne’s bk instantly became a bestseller, and she cntinues t wrk
thrugh the trauma caused by her unstable childhd. Suzanne’s extrardinary tale has captured the hearts f
millins, with thusands f nline fans praising her bravery.

The Can f Ham cannt find a buyer. It may be hard t see the Gherkin because the Walkie-Talkie and the
Cheesegrater get in the way. Lndn’s icnic skyline is cnstructed nt just frm glass and steel, but als frm
imaginative nicknames. This phenmenn f infrmal naming extends far beynd architecture, ffering insights
int cnsumer behavir and wrkplace dynamics(动态).
Cnsumers frequently create nicknames fr brands, which typically signal a genuine cnnectin. Research by
Zhe Zhang and Vanessa Patrick examined hw peple react t nicknames used by ther cnsumers. In ne
experiment, participants read an nline review f a McDnald’s item. Sme saw the chain referred t as “Mickey D’
s,” while thers saw the frmal name. The results shwed that when cnsumers use nicknames like “Mickey D’s”
in prduct reviews, thse reviews appear mre truthful and are mre likely t influence purchasing decisins.
Hwever, this psitive effect is fragile. When the researchers tested scenaris where a firm used its wn nickname
in cmmunicatins — such as Walmart referring t itself as “Wally Wrld” — the benefits disappeared. A
nickname that feels natural when used by cnsumers cmes acrss as untruthful when used by the firm itself.
Wrkplace is anther place filled with nicknames, with ne study finding 87% f emplyees encunter them.
Hwever, even if a nickname is meant as a mark f affectin, it matters wh cins it. In an experiment, researchers
lked int the differences between “upward nicknaming” (emplyees naming bsses) and “dwnward nicknaming”
(bsses naming emplyees). The result reveals that dwnward nicknaming is assciated with lwer perceived
cncern fr emplyee welfare, while upward nicknaming is assciated with greater staff well-being.
The lessns fr managers and brands are clear. Nicknaming is a natural scial habit that can fster cnnectin
and psitivity. Hwever, the mst effective and truthful nicknames are thse that arise naturally frm the bttm up.
Therefre, brands shuld avid verusing their wn, and bsses shuld nly intervene if nicknames cause
      discmfrt.
      8. What effect des using brand nicknames in cnsumer reviews have?
      A. It increases the willingness f purchase. B. It helps cnsumers make wiser decisins.
      C. It makes the reviews mre likely t be ignred. D. It causes the brand t ban the use f nicknames.
      第 5页/共 12页
      9. Why d the psitive effects f nicknames disappear when cmpanies use them?
      A. The nicknames are nt ppular amng the public. B. Cnsumers think the nicknames are t casual.
      C. The nicknames have lst the truthfulness. D. Brand values are nt well reflected.
      10. What can be inferred abut “dwnward nicknaming” in the wrkplace?
      A. It helps imprve staff prductivity. B. It makes emplyees feel less valued.
      C. It leads t lwer wrk engagement. D. It is encuraged by mst management teams.

A recent study published in Nature established an alarming link: fr every hur its elderly participants delayed
breakfast, their risk f death seemed t rise by 10%. It fllwed a 2019 study, which fund that participants wh
never cnsumed breakfast had a 75% higher risk f death.
Sme researchers think this is because thse wh skip breakfast might end up cnsuming mre fd later,
leading t issues in insulin(胰岛素) sensitivity. Others suggest that thse wh eat breakfast later might be staying
up later at night, which culd carry its wn health risks. But bth f these studies are bservatinal, meaning they
can’t definitely prve skipping r delaying breakfast is a cause f increased death risk.
Dr Suzanne Wylie, GP and medical advisr fr IQdctr, thught we shuld interpret these findings with
cautin. “Assciatin des nt mean causatin, and there are many pssible explanatins fr this link,” Dr Wylie
said, “fr example, peple wh are unwell might naturally eat later, s it may be that pr health leads t delayed
breakfasts, rather than the ther way arund. Fr healthy adults, particularly thse wh practise sme frm f
intermittent fasting, it’s unlikely t cause significant harm in itself”
Hwever this desn’t mean meal times are irrelevant fr all peple. Fr lder peple, skipping breakfast in
these grups culd cntribute t reduced energy intake, weight lss, r lw bld sugar levels, especially if they’re
      taking certain medicatins.
“The sum f a persn’s habits is much mre imprtant than ne factr taken in islatin. What smene eats,
hw active they are, and hw well they sleep are all far mre influential n lng-term health than the precise time
they have breakfast,” she stated, “while I wuldn’t describe skipping r delaying breakfast as ‘bad’ in a blanket
      第 6页/共 12页
sense, I wuld encurage cmmn peple, particularly lder nes, t maintain a regular eating pattern and nt t
      ignre early hunger cues.”
      12. What can we infer frm the tw studies mentined in the passage?
      A. Delaying breakfast by ne hur increases the death risk by 75%.
      B. Bth studies lack slid prf t cnfirm a causal relatinship.
      C. Skipping breakfast is the main cause f high death risk.
      D. Delayed breakfast leads t prer insulin sensitivity.
      13. Which f the fllwing best describes Dr. Wylie’s attitude twards the studies?
      A. Fully supprtive. B. Ttally ppsed. C. Cautiusly skeptical. D. Basically indifferent.
      14. What is Dr Wylie’s advice n breakfast?
      A. We need t stick t a cnsistent eating rutine.
      B. Older peple shuld eat breakfast earlier than yung adults.
      C. We shuld priritize the time f breakfast ver what we eat.
      D. Intermittent fasting shuld be publicized.
      15. What is the main purpse f the passage?
      A. T stress the link between breakfast and death risk.
      B. T warn the elderly against delaying r skipping breakfast.
      C. T urge peple t adpt a regular eating pattern fr better health.
      D. T present cnflicting views n the health effects f breakfast habits.
