D msquites prefer a certain bld type? Maybe—but it’s nt just ne factr that influences why these winged pests are attracted t us and researchers have nt yet reached an agreement n a final answer.
There are tw kinds f peple in the wrld: thse wh return frm time in the utdrs cvered in itchy msquit bites and thse wh can spend hurs in the same space and avid getting bitten at all. Let’s be hnest — msquites dn’t bite everyne equally.
S, what exactly makes sme peple mre attractive t msquites than thers?
Science reveals that a variety f factrs might make yu mre palatable t msquites, frm yur skin micrbe and carbn dixide emitted in yur breath t the clr f clthing yu’re wearing (with clrs like red, range, and black being the mst attractive t msquites). But in the end, much f the variatin in msquit preference cmes dwn t tw factrs: ur natural bdy smell and genetics.
Only the females bite humans and they d it t get a “bld meal,” taking prteins frm ur bld t make their eggs. T help lcate their prey, female msquites use their antennae (触角) and palps, the rgans between their antennae, t detect carbn dixide and smell. That means peple wh have a high metablic rate and emit mre carbn dixide, including thse wh are pregnant, wrking ut, r drinking alchl tend t be mre attractive t msquites.
The questin f whether msquites prefer a certain bld type is cntrversial. One thery suggests that bld type may als help determine msquit preference. If that’s the case, what bld type d msquites like? A study fund that the main msquites that carry a certain virus (dengue virus) liked t bite peple with type O bld mre than thse with ther bld types.
Hwever, ther research says that data frm experiments and labs——lking at whether bld type makes smene mre r less attractive t msquites——has led t many guesses, but the science is cntradictry. Instead, the researchers say that the chance f being smene msquites lve t bite has mre t d with bdy smell and skin micrbes than bld type.
      59. What kind f peple are mre likely t be bitten by msquites accrding t the passage?
      A. Peple wh wear light-clred clthes like white r blue.
      B. Peple with a lw metablic rate wh rarely exercise.
      C. Pregnant wmen wh emit mre carbn dixide.
      D. Peple wh have a strng preference fr sweet fds.
      60. What des the underlined wrd “palatable” in Paragraph 4 prbably mean?
      A. Nutritius.B. Dangerus.C. Unpleasant.D. Attractive.
      61. What can we infer abut msquit preference fr bld types?
      A. All scientists agree type O bld is mst attractive t msquites.
      B. The link between bld type and msquit bites is nt prven.
      C. Bld type is the mst imprtant factr fr msquit bites.
      D. Future studies will cnfirm bld type affects msquit preference.
      62. What is the main idea f the passage?
      A. T explain why female msquites bite humans and hw they lcate prey.
      B. T intrduce factrs influencing msquites’ biting preference.
      C. T prve skin micrbe is mre imprtant than bld type fr msquites.

Scial diversity is the difference in race and ther things that make yu wh yu are. Studies shw that scial diversity can bring peple truble. Peple with different clrs f skin have cnflicts ver cultures, languages and ways f thinking. Hwever, there are thers wh struggle t make diversity happen. S, what is gd abut scial diversity?
Scial diversity can be an advantage in prblem slving. One study fund that cmpanies with mre wmen leaders did better. They made mre mney. Anther study fund the same thing with banks that had nnwhite leaders. They made less mney. The reasn may lie in the fact that peple frm different scial backgrunds are mre likely t address prblems in different ways. In ther wrds , scial diversity means better prblem slving.
Further researches have been dne t shw why diversity wrks by lking at it in small grups. In 2006, several scientists studied racial diversity in small grups. The participants in the study needed t share what they knew. They were put in three-persn grups. Sme grups were all white. Other grups were made up f tw whites and ne nnwhite. Then, the grups were given a puzzle. Each persn had things nly he r she knew and needed t share everything t deal with the puzzle. The grups with ne nnwhite persn did much better than the all - white grups. The study shws being with peple like us makes us think we knw the same things, which eventually stps us frm sharing what we knw.
Diversity wrks nt nly by sharing varius thughts, but als by prmting hard wrk. One study asked peple t argue against smene else, and participants were tld the persn had different ideas frm them. Naturally, they all thught they wuld need t wrk harder when wrking tgether fr better results. When disagreement cmes frm a different persn, we wrk harder. Imagine yu are in a grup. Yu think peple might nt agree. One persn in yur grup is American. Anther is Chinese. Yu all have t wrk tgether. Then yu wrk harder t make it wrk. That’s hw diversity wrks.
