In fact, ne lcal schl has made the stuff f life the fcus f its curse. Leslie Medema, Head f Green Schl Bali, said, “We chse water as a theme (主题) fr last year and this year, because there’s a water shrtage in Bali.”
Green Schl Bali was built t create the next generatin f prblem slvers. Nw n campus, there are 50 student-led prjects that have been carried ut. Built frm bamb and ther sustainable (可持续的) material, the impressive pen-air equipment was designed t encurage imaginatin and creativity. Each structure fits in with what the schl’s funders call a living curse. The pint is t make them feel they have the skills and the ability t actively change the wrld.
Green Schl Bali pened in 2008, and has becme a big success. Nw it includes lcatins in New Zealand, Suth Africa and Mexic. What if the fd waste we thrw away culd help pwer an airplane? This idea might sund strange, but researchers at the University f Illinis Urbana-Champaign have made it a reality n a small scale(规模). They develped a methd t turn fd waste int jet fuel (喷气式飞机燃料).
In their study, published in Nature Cmmunicatins, the team describes a prcess that turns fd waste first int bi-fuel, which is then upgraded int jet fuel. This fuel can be used directly in planes withut any change. Tests shwed it met all industry standards fr traditinal jet fuel.
While this is still an early idea, this methd ffers a prmising way t cut dwn plane emissins (排放物). “We take waste and recver energy t create a useful prduct. This clses a lp (闭环) in the circular ecnmy,” said Prfessr Yuanhui Zhang, the study’s lead authr.
Aviatin (航空) is a majr surce f greenhuse gas emissins. While battery-pwered (电池驱动的) cars are becming mre cmmn, battery-pwered planes are still impractical fr lng flights because f lw energy effectiveness. Sustainable aviatin fuel (SAF) made frm rganic materials culd cut emissins by up t 80%. Hwever, prducing SAF that meets strict aviatin standards is challenging.
The researchers used a methd called hydrthermal liquefactin (HTL), which acts like a “pressure cker” t quickly turn fd waste int il. After several runds f prcessing, the il became a clean jet fuel ready fr use.
Althugh scaling up will need a lt f mney t build new factries and develp technlgy, this research marks an imprtant step tward greener air travel. It pictures a future where planes are pwered nt by fssil fuels, but by SAF made frm what we nce threw away, changing hw we prduce energy and help prtect ur planet.
32. What is ne advantage f the new jet fuel accrding t the research?
A. It makes batteries fr airplanes unnecessary.
B. It cmpletely slves the prblem f fd waste.
C. It can be used in planes withut making a change.
D. It is much cheaper t prduce than traditinal fuel.
33. What des Prfessr Yuanhui Zhang cnsider as the key t achieving a clsed lp?
A. Teaching peple t prduce little waste.
B. Turning waste int a useful prduct.
C. Cutting dwn emissins frm airplanes greatly.
D. Develping a new idea fr the aviatin industry.
34. Why des the authr mentin battery-pwered planes?
A. T stress the cmmn use f battery.
B. T explain the need fr ther aviatin fuels.
C. T prve electric cars are better than planes.
D. T shw they are the best way fr shrt flights.
35. What is the authr’s attitude twards the research?
