Finally, in 2020, we bught a huse n a street called Whitney Drive. It had trees and a friendly-lking yard. I felt this was the right place. Remembering my childhd, I knew smene had t take the first step t bring peple tgether. S, right after mving in. I suggested a neighbrhd party. Sarah and ur tw daughters agreed.
A mnth later, we sent invitatins t all 12 huses. Nw, sitting and waiting, I checked my watch. It was past 6 p.m. What if n ne came? I sat there, hping I culd be the gd neighbr I wanted t be.

The excitement abut delivery rbts has died dwn, but a cmpany in America is still determined t intrduce a pretty red delivery rbt.
The cmpany shwed ff the nearly 5-ft-tall rbt, cvered with cameras and sensrs, at an event in San Francisc n Mnday. The cmpany says the rbts are built t travel up t 20 mph n rads, bike lanes, and sidewalks (人行道), and they can carry up t 30 punds f gds. The rbt is electric, has a changeable battery (电池) and can travel up t six hurs after each getting pwer.
“We hpe the new red rbt can g t as many places as we can,” the cmpany’s cfunder said. “We’re trying ur hardest.” Cnsidering the technical challenge the red rbt has ahead f it, the cmpany says the rbt is built t perate n sidewalks, bike lanes, and rads. It’s meant t pilt in and ut f car parks t pick up fd and t navigate (导航) driveways and apartments t drp it ff. That means the sftware needs t “understand”: knwing the mvement f peple in the streets in advance, and getting arund a number f cmplex (复杂的) situatins, cars, and living things.
“Delivery rbts face all the challenges f the real wrld,” said Niklas Martelar, an assistant prfessr at the Human-Cmputer Interactin Institute at Carnegie Melln University. In 2021, he and his clleague Sarah Fx fllwed a small grup f delivery rbts that were being tested in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. “They had truble navigating sidewalks: they gt stuck: they had cmmunicatin with peple that was nt always gd, he said. He pinted ut that just this mnth, a vide became very ppular nline. In the vide, a persn using an electric wheelchair tried t g arund a sidewalk delivery rbt in Ls Angeles, but failed.
“But we believe that delivery rbts will be a majr future trend thugh they face sme challenges”, said Bryn Smith, a prfessr f a university. He adds that they will bring us a lt f cnvenience t ur lives.

      11. What’s Bryn Smith’s attitude twards the future f delivery rbts?

A team f scientists has fund that the Suthern Ocean emits (发出) far mre carbn dixide (CO2) during the lng, sunless Antarctic winter than scientists nce believed. Accrding t their new research, the amunt f winter CO2 emitted frm the cean has been underestimated (低估) by up t 40%.
The Suthern Ocean is very imprtant in Earth’s carbn system, taking in a large share f the CO2 prduced by human activities. Yet scientists have lng struggled t pin dwn hw much carbn it actually exchanges with the atmsphere, calling it the “largest surce f uncertainty” in glbal CO2 estimates.
That uncertainty cmes frm nt having enugh direct bservatins. During the lightless winter mnths, the area is nearly impssible t study, as it is cvered with darkness and hit by pwerful strms. Previus satellites, which need sunlight t cllect cean infrmatin, cannt perate under these cnditins. As a result, researchers have had t depend n mdels that nly shw part f what happens in winter.
T slve this prblem, the research team turned t a new way that mixed 14 years f satellite LIDAR infrmatin frm the CALIPSO prject with machine learning. Unlike thers, LIDAR is an active technlgy. It wrks similarly t radar (雷达) but uses laser light instead f radi waves, carrying its wn light surce. This allwed scientists t cllect infrmatin even in ttal darkness, prducing the first cntinuus picture f wintertime CO2 exchange acrss the Suthern Ocean.
The results shw that previus estimates missed abut 40% f the cean’s winter carbn emissins. Besides crrecting the infrmatin, this study als changed hw scientists understand the carbn cycle in the Suthern Ocean. The team intrduced a grundbreaking (创新的) “three-lp framewrk” that explains hw different physical and bilgical prcesses affect CO2 exchange in different parts f the Suthern Ocean. This ffers a clearer picture f hw this imprtant part f the climate system wrks. Fixing it can help imprve glbal climate mdels and understand future.
      12. What des the underlined phrase “pin dwn” in paragraph 2 mean?
      A. Prevent.B. Demand.C. Challenge.D. Understand.
      13. Why is it difficult t measure CO2 emissins frm the Suthern Ocean in winter?
      A. The air is badly plluted during that time.B. The mdels require repeated imprvement.
      C. The area is dark and faces pwerful strms.D. The sunlight there is unbearable fr humans.
      14. What des the authr intend t d in paragraph 4?
      A. Shw the difficulties the scientists have t face.
      B. Stress the imprtance f the Suthern Ocean.
      C. Intrduce the new methd used by the researchers.
      D. Describe the challenges f studying climate change.
      15. Which f the fllwing can best describe the finding?
      A. Shrt-lived.B. Grundbreaking.
      C. Narrw-fcused.D. Underestimated.
