Like almst every set f new parents, Bryan and Elizabeth Shaw started taking pictures f their sn, Nah, practically frm the mment he was brn.
When he was abut three mnths ld, Elizabeth nticed smething dd when she tk his picture. The flash n their digital camera created the typical red dt in the center f Nah’s left eye, but the right eye had a white spt at the center, almst as if the flash was being reflected back at the camera by smething.
When Elizabeth mentined the strange phenmenn t their dctr, she shined a light int Nah’s eye, saw the same white reflectin, and immediately sent the family t an eye expert.
A white reflectin instead f a red ne is an bvius sign f eye cancer, and that is exactly what Nah had. He went thrugh mnths f treatment, but dctrs eventually culd nt save his eye. Retinblastma, the scientific name f Nah’s tumr (肿瘤), is treatable if discvered early.
Bryan Shaw culdn’t help but wnder whether there were signs he’d missed. He went back ver every baby picture f Nah he culd find thusands f them and discvered the first white spt in a pht taken when Nah was 12 days ld. As time went n, it appeared mre frequently. “By the time he was fur mnths ld, it was shwing up in 25 percent f the pictures taken f him per mnth”, Bryan said, wh was a chemistry prfessr at Baylr University in Texas.
It was t late fr Nah’s eye, but Bryan was determined t put his insights t gd use. He created a database that recrded the cancer’s appearance in every pht. He als cllected phts and gathered the data frm eight ther children with retinblastma. Equipped with that data, he began t wrk with cwrkers in Baylr’s cmputer science department t develp a smartphne app that can scan the phts in the user’s camera rll t search fr white eye and can be used as a kind f instrument fr examining the eyes.
Called White Eye Detectr, it is nw available free f charge n Ggle Play and in Apple’s App Stre. “I just kept telling myself, I really need t d this,” Bryan said. “This disease is tugh t detect. Nt nly culd this sftware save visin, but it can save lives.”

On my first day at my current jb, I came t wrk expecting a friendly welcme — but I was met with silence. After a quick intrductin t the business manager, I was tld where t get my ID and then left t figure the rest ut n my wn. I distinctly remember walking int my first departmental meeting, eager t meet my clleagues, nly fr the bss t skip ver intrducing me entirely. Nt really the type f envirnment that inspires a feeling f belnging.
The initial islatin stuck with me. Instead f waiting fr the wrkplace culture t change, I decided t create my wn sense f cmmunity. I started a lunch grup, which grew int a regular cffee hur. I invited new hires t jin infrmal meetups, fstering cnnectins befre and after department meetings. Over time, this small, self-made netwrk became my anchr (精神支柱) at wrk. But what if I hadn’t built that cmmunity myself?
Chances are I wuld have left the jb. Increasingly, researchers are realizing that cultivating a sense f belnging is critical fr wrkfrce retentin (保留). Histrically, studies n wrkfrce retentin have fcused n mre fundamental factrs like pay, hurs, and wrklad. These are all imprtant qualities that cannt be ignred. But they are nt sufficient.
Yu must have heard f Maslw’s hierarchy f needs. The thery suggests lwer-level needs must be met befre yu can prgress t higher-level needs. At the base f Maslw’s hierarchy, physilgical and safety needs must be met. This is where fundamentals like pay, hurs, and wrkplace safety wuld fall. Just abve that is the need fr lve and belnging. In a wrkplace, this translates t a sense f cnnectin and feeling like part f the team.
Accrding t Maslw’s thery, it’s impssible t be the best versin f urselves withut meeting these fundamental needs. S althugh, yes, being paid fairly is imprtant, it’s nt enugh t mtivate emplyees t perate at their highest level. Fr that, yu need t cultivate a culture f belnging.
8.What did the writer experience n the first day f his new jb?
      A. Emtinal distance between clleagues.
      B. A detailed tur arund the wrkplace.
      C. A warm welcme frm the department.
      D. Brief training frm the business manager.
9.What is the writer’s purpse f initiating a lunch grup?
      A. Building up a sense f cnnectin.
      B. Establishing a regular break time.
      C. Cnducting meetings ver dinner.
      D. Passing n the wrkplace culture.
10.Why des the writer intrduce Maslw’s thery?
      A. T describe an ideal wrking envirnment.
      B. T discuss the rle f pay in jb satisfactin.
      C. T suggest an effective management apprach.
      D. T explain the cntributrs t wrkfrce retentin.
11.What des the last paragraph imply fr a wrkplace?
      A. Wrkplace safety is a higher-level need.
      B. A rise in pay can best mtivate the emplyees.
      C. A culture f belnging unlcks a wrkfrce’s ptential.
      D. Basic needs bring ut the best versins f the emplyees.
      D
Msquites (蚊子) carry malaria (疟疾), which kills thusands f peple each year. Nw sme researchers are trying t use genetic engineering (基因工程) t make them int partners in the fight against the disease.
Fr years, public health fficials have tried t limit the disease by cntrlling msquit ppulatins. “But that apprach is shrt-term,” says Anthny James, a prfessr f bilgy and genetics at the University f Califrnia, Irvine, “because msquites are very tugh little insects, and their ppulatins can quickly increase.”
Therefre, James and his clleagues want t try a different apprach: making msquites themselves int malaria-fighting warrirs, which is cmpletely different frm traditinal ways f cntrlling malaria.
T understand hw it wrks, it helps t understand the life cycle f malaria. The malaria pathgen (病原体) is a parasite (寄生虫) that grw inside humans. It’s passed via msquites that mve frm persn t persn, sucking bld. “If we can make the msquites difficult fr the pathgens t survive, we can wipe ut the disease,” he says. But making msquites uninviting t malaria is a Herculean task.
T slve the prblem, the team used a gene-editing technique called CRISPR. They started with genes frm mice, whse immune systems d fight human malaria, engineered thse genes, and then gave them t the msquites.
It turned ut the gene-edited msquites wrked very well. They reduced the number f parasites in the msquit befre they were passed t a human hst.
James’ team are nw wrking n planning a field trial, which he hpes culd be dne n an island r in anther islated lcatin.
But genetically changing wild animals des nt sit well with envirnmentalists. “There’s n need t engineer a msquit,” says Dana Perls, senir prgram manager fr the emerging technlgy prgram at the nn-prfit Friends f the Earth. Perls pints ut that natural ways t reduce malaria appear t be shwing prmise, as des a new vaccine (疫苗) against the disease. “Why take unnecessary risks and use msquites that can’t be cntrlled nce sent int the wild?” she asks.
12.What can we knw frm the secnd and third paragraphs?
      A. Msquites can reprduce quickly.
      B. Msquites can be easily cntrlled.
      C. Msquites have killed thusands f peple.
      D. Msquites have been used t fight against malaria.
13.What des the underlined phrase “a Herculean task” in Para.4 mean?
      A. A great cmfrt.B. A tugh jb.
      C. A narrw escape.D. A key factr.
14.What is envirnmentalists’ attitude twards this new apprach?
      A. Uncncerned.B. Psitive.C. Negative.D. Unclear.
15.What is the best title fr the text?
      A. Preventing Malaria with a New Vaccine.
      B. Curing Malaria with Gene-edited msquites.
      C. Limiting Malaria by Cntrlling Msquit Ppulatins
      D. Cntrlling Malaria by Engineering Msquites’ Genes
