A pure frm f cellulse (纤维素) prduced by bacteria can act as a plant bandage, researchers reprt, greatly bsting healing and regeneratin in plants. Unlike animals, plants cannt escape danger, and instead rely n remarkable regenerative abilities. Bacterial cellulse, already used in human medicine fr treating wunds and burns, has nw been fund t enhance plant healing as well.
Plant bilgist Núria Sánchez Cll and her clleagues were testing bacterial cellulse bandages t prevent infectins in wunded plants. They sn nticed wunds treated with the bandages healed better and faster. “This made us interested in finding the cause f this prcess,” says Dr Cll.
T evaluate the perfrmance f the bandages as healing devices, the scientists made small cuts in the leaves f tw cmmn lab plants, applying the “Band-Aids” t half the wunds. After ne week, mre than 80 percent f the treated wunds had healed cmpletely, cmpared with less than 20 percent f the untreated nes. Their analysis shwed that tissues in the treated wunds appeared healthy, while untreated wunds shwed signs f dehydratin (脱水).
At a genetic level, the healing caused by bacterial cellulse appears distinct frm nrmal plant wund repair. The bacterial cellulse stimulated a different set f genes, turning ff sme typically invlved with healing while activating thers related t infectin defense. The researchers believe this changed respnse results frm a cmbinatin f factrs: the wund itself and the plant’s reactin t the bacterial cellulse as a freign bdy, ptentially stimulating a defensive mechanism.
While still in early stages, the findings d suggest ptential applicatins in agriculture, Sánchez Cll says, such as facilitating grafting (嫁接), preserving cut plant material r serving as a grwth medium in labs. Other research grups are already trying t determine whether these findings apply t ther regeneratin prcesses that aren’t yet fully understd.
12. What is the newly fund functin f bacterial cellulse?
A. Speeding up plant grwth.B. Enhancing healing in plants.
C. Helping plants avid danger.D. Treating wunds fr humans.
13. Why did the scientists make cuts in the plant leaves?
A. T prevent them frm dehydratin.B. T facilitate the grafting f the plant.
C. T test the effectiveness f the “Band-Aids”.D. T study plants’ natural regenerative abilities.
14. What is the furth paragraph mainly abut?
A. The features f bacterial cellulse.
B. The advantages f the “Band-Aids” fr plants.
C. The limitatins f bacterial cellulse in plant healing.
D. The wrking principle f the bacterial cellulse-based “Band-Aids”.
15. What des the last paragraph imply?
A. The research has certain shrtcmings.
B. It is hard t fully understand the “Band-Aids”.
C. The findings have ptential imprtance in agriculture.
D. The findings have been applied in large-scale farming.
