When I was a little girl, I liked drawing, freely and jyusly making marks n the walls at hme. In primary schl, I learned t write using chalks. Writing seemed t be anther frm f drawing. I shaped individual letters int repeating lines, which were abstract frms, delightful but meaningless patterns.
In secndary schl, art was my favrite subject. Since I lved it s much I thught I was gd at it. Fr the art O-level exam I had t present an il painting. I fund it difficult, but still hped t pass. I failed, with a lw grade. I’d been ver-cnfident. Nw I’d been declared talentless.
But ther channels f creativity stayed pen: I went n writing pems and stries. Still, I went t exhibitins ften. I cntinued my habitual drawing, which I nw characterized as childish ddling (乱画). In my 30s, I made painter friends and learned new ways f lking at art. Hwever, I culdn’t let myself have a g at actually ding it. Thugh these new friends were abstract painters using il paints, r were printmakers r sculptrs, I tk il painting as the tab (禁忌) high frm I wasn’t allwed t practice.
One night, in my early 40s, I dreamed that a big wman in red apprached me, handed me a bag f paints, and tld me t start painting. The dream felt s authritative that it shk me. It was a frm f energy, giving me back smething I’d lst. Accrdingly, I started by experimenting with water clrs. Finally, I bught sme il paints.
Althugh I have enjyed breaking my decades-lng tab abut wrking with il paints, I have discvered I nw prefer chalks and ink. I let my line drawings turn int cartns I send t friends. It all feels free and easy. Un-anxius. This time arund, I can accept my limitatins but keep ging.
Becming a successful painter calls fr being reslute. I realized I was always afraid f wanting t much. That dream reminded me that thse fears and desires culd encurage me t take risks and make experiments.

Demanding days seem designed t test ur self-cntrl. We all need t rely n willpwer t avid shrt-term temptatins and verride unwanted thughts r impulses (冲动). The prevailing psychlgical thery prpsed that willpwer resembled a kind f battery. With each exercise f self-cntrl, yu exhausted this resurce. Withut a chance t recharge, that resurce ran lw, making it harder t maintain self-cntrl. This prcess was knwn as “eg depletin”.
In 2010, hwever, psychlgist Vernika Jb published a study that questined the fundatins f “eg depletin” thery, with sme interesting evidence that eg depletin depended n peple’s underlying beliefs. In the study, Jb divided participants int tw categries: thse with a “limited” view f willpwer and thse with a “nn-limited” view f willpwer, based n a prir questinnaire. She then gave the participants sme standard labratry tests examining mental fcus, which was cnsidered t depend n the reserves f willpwer. The study fund that peple with a limited mindset tended t perfrm exactly as eg depletin thery wuld predict but the nn-limited individuals did nt, which indicated that peple’s beliefs abut willpwer culd be self-fulfilling prphecies (预言). Thse wh believed willpwer was easily depleted saw their self-cntrl decrease, while thse wh believed in “mental stamina (耐力)” experienced n eg depletin.
Subsequent debates abut the reliability f the labratry tests f eg depletin emerged, but Jb’s wrk demnstrated that mindset significantly impacted real-life utcmes. Her fllw-up study revealed that after cmpleting demanding tasks, mst participants recvered t sme degree vernight, but thse with nn-limited mindsets actually experienced an increase in their prductivity the fllwing day, as if energized by the extra pressure.
If yu already have a nn-limited mindset abut willpwer, these findings might be a cause fr self-satisfactin. Fr thse with limited mindsets, hpe is nt lst. Learning abut this science can help shift beliefs. Sharing this knwledge with thers can further cnslidate this shift. Mrever, recllecting times f engaging in taxing yet enjyable tasks naturally shifts peple’s beliefs tward nn-limited mindsets, as they see prf f their wn mental stamina. T prvide yurself with further evidence, yu can cnduct small self-cntrl tests. As yu realize yur willpwer’s grwth, yu’ll find resisting temptatins and distractins easier.
While immediate miracles aren’t guaranteed, perseverance will lead t a changed mindset and increased self-cntrl, prpelling actins tward persnal gals.
9.“Eg depletin” thery shws that willpwer ________.
A. is a test f yur character
B. is like a chargeable battery
C. helps cntrl ur impulses
D. reduces after exercising self-cntrl
10.What can we learn frm Jb’s tw studies?
A. Extra pressure bsts mental fcus.
B. Demanding tasks reduce mental fcus.
C. Reserves f willpwer depend n mental fcus.
D. The change f mental fcus relies n ne’s mindset.
11.Which f the fllwing can build nn-limited mindsets?
A. Picturing yur ideal university.
B. Ding hmewrk in frnt f a TV.
C. Recalling mastering a challenging pian piece.
D. Sharing science knwledge with friends.

Peple wh multitask all the time may be the wrst at ding tw things at nce, a new research suggests. The findings, based n perfrmances and self-evaluatin by abut 275 cllege students, indicate that many peple multitask nt ut f a desire t increase prductivity, but because they are easily distracted and can’t fcus n ne activity. And “thse peple turn ut t be the wrst at handling different things,” said David Sanbnmatsu, a psychlgist at the University f Utah.
Sanbnmatsu and his clleagues gave the students a set f tests and asked them t reprt hw ften they multitasked, hw gd they thught they were at it, and hw sensatin-seeking (寻求刺激) r imperative (冲动) they were. They then evaluated the participants’ multitasking ability with a tricky mental task that required the students t d simple mathematical calculatins while remembering a set f letters.
Nt surprisingly, the scientists said, mst peple thught they were better than average at multitasking, and thse wh thught they were better at it were mre likely t reprt using a cellphne while driving r viewing multiple kinds f media at nce. But thse wh frequently deal with many things at the same time were fund t perfrm the wrst at the actual multitasking test. They als were mre likely t admit t sensatin-seeking and impulsive behavir, which cnnects with hw easily peple get bred and distracted.
“Peple multitask nt because it’s ging t lead t greater prductivity, but because they’re distractible, and they get sucked int things that are nt as imprtant.” Sanbnmatsu said.
Adam Gazzaley, a researcher at the University f Califrnia, San Francisc, wh was nt a member f the research grup, said ne limitatin f the study was that it culdn’t find ut whether peple wh start ut less fcused tend tward multitasking r whether peple’s recgnizing and understanding abilities change as a result f multitasking.
The findings d suggest, hwever, why the sensatin-seeker wh multitask the mst may enjy risky distracted driving. “Peple wh are multitasking are generally less sensitive t risky situatins.” said Paul Atchley, anther researcher nt in the grup. “This may partly explain why peple g in fr these situatins even thugh they’re dangerus.”
12.The research led by Sanbnmatsu indicates that peple wh multitask __________.
A. seek high prductivity cnstantly
B. prefer handling different things when getting bred
C. are mre fcused when ding many things at a time
D. have the prest results in ding varius things at the same time
13.When Sanbnmatsu and his clleagues cnducted their research, they __________.
A. assessed the multitasking ability f the students
B. evaluated the academic achievements f the students
C. analyzed the effects f the participants’ tricky mental tasks
D. measured the changes f the students’ understanding ability
14.Accrding t Sanbnmatsu, peple multitask because f their __________.
A. limited pwer in calculatin
B. interests in ding things differently
C. inability t cncentrate n ne task
D. impulsive desire t try new things
15.Frm the last paragraph, we can learn that multitaskers usually __________.
A. drive very skillfully
B. g in fr different tasks
C. fail t react quickly t ptential dangers
D. refuse t explain the reasns fr their behavir

If yu want t develp maximum credibility (可信性), is it better t be a hedgehg (刺猬) r a fx? Accrding t Isaiah Berlin, the hedgehg knws ne thing very well, and the fx knws a lt f things.
Is there a clear advantage f ne style ver the ther? Hedgehg thinkers tend t answer yes. 16 And they are usually very credible in ding s. Accrding t Jim Hart, the “hedgehg cncept” is ne f the factrs that lead cmpanies t greatness. They fcus n ne thing and d it really well. They figure ut what they are gd at. 17 The hedgehg cncept makes perfect sense fr cmpanies.
18 Philip Tate has studied the track recrds f thse flks n the Sunday talk shws wh make predictins abut what will happen. He has fund that hedgehgs are nt nly wrng mre ften than fxes, but that they are less likely t recgnize r admit that they are wrng when events d nt match their predictins.
The advantage that fxes have is that they are mre likely t seek ut new infrmatin frm a brader range f surces, and are cmfrtable with uncertainty and new infrmatin. 19 They try t include it in their viewpint rather than t exclude it frm their thinking. They als have a clearer estimatin f what they knw and dn’t knw.
S, which is better? The questin can be answered in a fxy hedgehg style. 20 The chice between being a hedgehg r a fx is a false trade-ff. The mst effective way t g thrugh life is t try t be that rare mixture knwn as fxy hedgehg.

六、阅读表达:本大题共1小题,共10分。
40.When peple are asked what’s imprtant in their lives, they ften mentin humr, yet philsphers wuld disagree.
The first is hw little they have said. The mst that majr philsphers like Plat, Hbbes, and Kant wrte abut laughter r humr was a few paragraphs within a discussin f anther tpic. Martian anthrplgists (人类学家) cmparing the amunt f philsphical writing n humr with what has been written n, say, justice, might well cnclude that humr culd be left ut f human life withut much lss.
The secnd is hw negative mst philsphers have been in their assessments f humr. Frm ancient Greece until the 20th century, the vast majrity f philsphical cmments n laughter and humr fcused n scrnful (蔑视的) r mcking laughter, r n laughter that verpwers peple, rather than n cmedy, wit, r jking. Plat, the mst influential critic f laughter, treated laughter as an emtin that verrides (凌驾于) ratinal self-cntrl. He says the guardians f the state shuld avid laughter, “fr when ne abandns himself t vilent laughter, his cnditin causes a vilent reactin.” Anther f Plat’s bjectins t laughter is that it is evil. Plat analyzes the enjyment f cmedy as a frm f scrn. The peple we laugh at imagine themselves t be wealthier, better lking, r mre virtuus than they really are. In laughing at them, we take delight in smething evil: their self- ignrance.
Because f these bjectins t laughter and humr, Plat says that in the ideal state, cmedy shuld be tightly cntrlled. “We shall rder that such representatins be left t slaves r hired aliens, and receive n serius cnsideratin whatsever. N free persn, whether wman r man, shall be fund taking lessns in them.”
Greek thinkers after Plat had similarly negative cmments. Thugh Aristtle cnsidered wit a valuable part f cnversatin, he agreed with Plat that laughter expresses scrn. The Stics, with their emphasis n self-cntrl, agreed with Plat that laughter weakens self-cntrl. Epictetus’s Enchiridin advises “Let nt yur laughter be lud, frequent, r unrestrained.” His fllwers said that he never laughed at all.
(1) What cnclusin d Martian anthrplgists make n humr?______________________________________________________________________
(2) Why did Plat suggest that the gvernrs f a cuntry shuld get rid f laughter?______________________________________________________________________
(3) Please decide which part is false in the fllwing statement, then underline it and explain why.
The Stics als had negative cmments n laughter but they emphasized that laughter strengthened self-cntrl.
