It tells the stry f 384 British prisners rescued by brave Chinese fishermen after the Japanese army had lcked hundreds mre sldiers in the sinking warship, Lisbn Maru.
As a British natinal, my jb was t prject my best 1940s British sldier’s vice, shuting, screaming, grunting and giving cmmands as varius survivrs during the daring rescue.
Jining a team f fellw Western actrs, we watched the film’s dramatic scenes n a large screen as several micrphnes recrded ur wrds and actins in a recrding studi. Reading lines alne was scary, as I was keen t maintain clarity while als expressing the intense emtins f the scene as realistically as pssible.
The mst enjyable part was wrking as a grup, with each persn perfrming different lines, ften verlapping (重叠) t create the chas (混乱) and cnfusin f the intense survival scenes featuring hundreds f sldiers. This was where we culd really play with different tnes and emtins t create a number f believable and dramatic vices, trying t live up t the excellent nscreen wrk f the cast and crew.
Even thugh ur cntributin t the picture was small, there was a nticeable level f team spirit and seriusness. We appreciated the gravity f the histrical event and the respect it had clearly been given in the film. The wrk required accurate timing t match the actrs’ lip mvements and fit with the actrs’ gestures, and even thugh I nly did ne day in the studi, it was tiring wrk, leaving my vice rugh and hurting.
Since the event, I’ve kept in tuch with a number f the actrs. This experience shws that it’s always wrth stepping utside yur cmfrt zne t explre new creative pprtunities. And it was pretty fun t see my name in the credits, t!

D yu ever talk t yurself? Althugh it’s nt always a cnscius habit, mst f us practice self-talk n a daily basis, as a way f guiding, mtivating r supprting urselves.
Over the years, research has shwn that self-talk can increase prductivity, mtivatin and cnfidence, and even help manage feelings. “There is slid evidence that self-talk strategies imprve learning and perfrmance,” accrding t sprt psychlgist Antnis Hatzigergiadis, wh studies the phenmenn f self-talk.
He explains that there are generally three reasns why we practice self-talk: t instruct, t mtivate r t evaluate. Instructinal self-talk happens when we need t guide urselves thrugh a specific task, such as learning a new skill. Mtivatinal self-talk usually is used when we want t prepare urselves fr smething challenging; it can help t increase cnfidence. Evaluative self-talk mstly is related t past events r actins.
Hatzigergiadis stresses that if we want t use such self-talk t gd advantage, it needs t be shrt, precise and, mst f all, cnsistent. Of curse, self-talk als can be ineffective and even detrimental if it’s nt dne right.
“It is a matter f persnal preference r what wrks fr each persn; but generally, it is advised that self - talk be psitively rather than negatively phrased and fcus n what yu shuld d rather than n what yu shuld avid,” Hatzigergiadis says. S, fr example, it wuld be better t say “stay cl” instead f “dn’t get upset”. Althugh bth instructins cnvey the same meaning, yu shuld use psitive wrds rather than negative nes. In this way yu can avid ill results.
Anther thing that can make a difference when practicing self-talk is the way yu address yurself. Accrding t research published in Jurnal f Persnality and Scial Psychlgy, using “yu” rather than “I” when talking t yurself tends t be mre effective. The researchers explain that when yu think f yurself as anther persn, it allws yu t give mre bjective and useful feedback.
      28. What des the research say abut self-talk?
      A. It is always an uncnscius behavir.B. It is a daily habit fr everyne.
      C. It may help strengthen memry.D. It can make peple feel better.
      29. What can be cncluded frm Hatzigergiadis’ explanatin?
      A. Self-talk ccurs in different situatins.B. Self-talk usually makes ne brave.
      C. Self-talk arises with varius feelings.D. Self-talk nly wrks when learning a new skill.
      30. What des the underlined wrd “detrimental” in paragraph 4 prbably mean?
      A. Cnfusing.B. Useless.C. Harmful.D. Unbearable.
      31. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
      A. Self-talk: a clse relatin t the past.B. Self-talk: a great way t avid ill results.
      C. Self-talk: a useful tl t benefit ur life.D. Self-talk: a matter f persnal preference.

Yu might have heard that penguins marry fr life. The tiny birds, fund in Australia and New Zealand, leave their partners if they’re nt cntent with hw many chickens they’re prducing. Nw, researchers have fund that the number f break-ups affects the species’ reprductive success mre than ther factrs.
Little blue penguins are the wrld’s smallest species f penguins, grwing t an average f just 12 inches high. Phillip Island, suthwest f Melburne, is hme t arund 30,000 f these tiny birds. “It has the wrld’s mst little penguins,” says Richard Reina, a bilgist at Mnash University and cauthr f the new study published in Eclgy and Evlutin.
After a day f lking fr fd at sea, the tiny birds return t their place n the hillside. Sme f them live in special nesting bxes and are micr-chipped (微芯片), s scientists can easily gather infrmatin. During the breeding (繁殖) seasn—September t February—researchers recrd which birds are paired in nesting bxes r “married”, when they lay eggs and when the eggs hatch as well as the chickens’ grwth and survival rates. They als nte if any pairs separate r break up.
Reina and his cwrkers examined penguin break up rates ver 13 breeding seasns. On average, arund ne in fur pairs fund new partners each year but the break up rate in ne year culd be as lw as ne in twenty r as high as ne in three. “This high variability f break-up rates was fairly surprising,” says Reina. Years with a higher break-up rate were strngly crrelated with lwer breeding success. The break-up rate was als mre reliable fr predicting future breeding success than envirnmental r behaviral factrs, like sea surface temperature r habits fr seeking fd.
Understanding the factrs that influence breeding is essential fr assessing penguins’ lng-term survival and taking sme prtective measures. Experts culd ptentially predict hw successful upcming breeding seasns will be based n penguin break-up rates. This is particularly imprtant as human activities cntinue t impact the cean.

      A. The family structure f penguins.B. Impacts f penguin break-ups.
      C. The reasn fr penguin marriage.D. Changes in penguin break-up rates.
      33. What is the scientists’ purpse f attaching micrchips t the penguins?
      A. T track fd.B. T prtect the eggs.
      C. T cllect data.D. T recrd the climate.
      34. What did Reina think f the break-up rates f penguins?
      A. It was inspiring.B. It was frightening.
      C. It was understandable.D. It was unexpected.
      35. Why is the study imprtant fr cnservatin effrts?
      A. It helps predict penguins’ breeding success rate.
      B. It measures the effect f human activities.
      C. It leads t finding the best nesting bxes.
      D. It shws penguins’ gd adaptatin.

We’d practiced every afternn fr a mnth, running drills and practicing teamwrk, but ur star frward (前锋) Tm had hurt his knee in last week’s practice. The dctr said he’d need t rest fr at least a mnth. Withut him, we had n ne wh culd cnsistently scre gals. After practice yesterday, everyne sat silently n the sccer field, wrried we’d lse the first match against Class 5, the defending champins.
“I can’t believe this,” said ur captain, Le, kicking a stne n the grund. “Tm was ur best player. He scred 8 gals last seasn. Hw can we win withut him?”
N ne said anything. I lked arund at my teammates: sme stared at their shes, thers shk their heads. I’d always played defense (防守) as a training partner, staying back t blck the ther team’s shts, but I’d secretly practiced sht in my backyard every weekend. My dad had even set up a small gal fr me. Maybe I culd try playing frward? But my hands started sweating at the thught. I’d never scred a gal in a real match. What if I messed up, missed the net, and let the whle team dwn?
Just then, Tm walked slwly with his crutches (拐杖), his knee wrapped in a thick bandage. “Hey, guys,” he said, frcing a smile. “Dn’t lk s dwn. Yu’re a great team. Yu just need t believe in yurselves.” Le sighed and std up. “But we dn’t have a frward, Tm. Wh’s ging t scre when the match starts?”
Tm’s eyes scanned the team, stpping n me. “David, I’ve seen yu stay late t practice shting after every practice. Yur shts are strng and exact. Why dn’t yu try playing frward?”
My heart raced, and I felt my face get ht. “Me? I... I dn’t knw if I can,” I said, my vice shaking s much that I culd barely hear myself.
