Every September, back-t-schl features fld the news and ur scial media feeds with many stries abut decrating drmitries and tearful gdbyes n cllege mve-in day as teenagers fly frm the nest. Hwever, adult learners are ften ignred (忽视).
I knw because I was ne f them. Ten years earlier, I attended an arts high schl but left early because f family respnsibilities. At 18, I was t excited abut a Bradway theater jb t cnsider cllege. I had been a reader with wide-ranging interests, but I never thught I belnged in higher educatin.

But age hardly makes the list.
I returned t schl in middle age nt fr a better jb but t start ver. Ging back t schl rebuilt me. It allwed me t develp the self-cntrl I lacked as a teenager, and it ffered me space t deal with questins I culdn’t fully explre in my wrk r persnal life. Pre-teens wh use increasing amunts f scial media perfrm prer in reading, vcabulary and memry tests cmpared with thse wh use little r n scial media. That’s accrding t a new study that suggests a link between scial media use and prer cgnitin (认知) in children.

T understand that, researchers divided the children int three grups. The largest grup, cnsisting f abut 58% f the children, used little r n scial media ver the next few years. The secnd-largest grup, abut 37% f the children, started ut with lw-level use f scial media, but by the time they turned 13, they were spending abut an hur each day n scial media. The remaining 5% f the children were spending abut three r mre hurs a day by age 13.
All the grups were given a range f tests t measure their cgnitive functining at the start f the study. “What was actually ntable and surprising t me was that even the lw-increasing scial media users — thse wh used scial media fr abut ne hur a day by age 13 — perfrmed n average 1 t 2 pints lwer n reading and memry tasks cmpared t nn-scial media users,” says Nagata. “The high-increasing grup perfrmed up t 4 t 5 pints lwer than the nn-scial media users.”
It’s imprtant t understand that children are a mving target; even a slight change in their develpment after a shrt perid f time means that they are nw in a directin different frm thers. That means tw, three, r five years frm nw, we might be talking abut sme very significant gaps (差距) between children wh were heavy users and thse wh were nt.

      13. Hw did the researchers take the study?
      A. By quting an expert.B. By explaining a cncept.
      C. By testing in grups.D. By giving examples.
      14. What did Nagata find surprising abut the study results?
      A. Nn-scial media users scred the highest in cgnitive tests.
      B. Heavy scial media users scred 4 t 5 pints lwer than thers.
      C. Even 1-hur daily scial media users had lwer test scres.
      D. The number f scial media users was larger than expected.
      15. What can we learn frm the last paragraph?
      A. Small differences in test scres will reduce ver time.
      B. Scial media use may widen future develpment gaps.
      C. Heavy scial media users will fall behind in their studies.
      D. Test scres are very imprtant fr children’s future develpment.

Suddenly, the wind blew thrugh the windw, causing the curtain t mve gently. I shuddered, imagining that the mnsters were abut t enter my rm. I wanted t call my parents, but my thrat felt tight, and I culdn’t make a sund. I clsed my eyes and kept telling myself it was all my imaginatin.
After what felt like hurs, I slwly calmed dwn. The “red eyes” n the dr seemed even mre terrifying, but I frced myself t stare at it. Gathering up my curage, I gt ut f bed slwly and std up unsteadily. I felt I culdn’t breathe. When I reached it, I realized the “red eyes” were just the pwer scket. I smiled, feeling silly fr being s scared. Frm that night n, I knew mst fears are just made up in my head. Curage can beat all scary things — even the mnsters in my mind.
