Blankets f leaves nw cver the grund, prviding a habitat fr pllinatrs(传粉昆虫) alng with their eggs and larvae(幼虫). This als regulates the sil's temperature especially with snw n the grund. With this prtectin, plants aren't tricked by early sunlight int spruting(发芽) t sn and being buried by snw.

But fr nw, I' ll watch the birds gather nesting material frm the still-standing grasses and take cmfrt in knwing that the dying plant material I' ve left behind prtects the bees and butterflies that will sn help bring beauty int this wrld.

My father started learning French at 57, drawn by the ptential benefits f bilingualism in delaying dementia(失智症). Nw, 20 years later, he's n his third teacher. Many peple like my father have attempted t pick up a new language. But can this really bst brain health?
' Accrding t experts, regularly using a new language brings cgnitive(认知的) benefits. If yu' re trying t recall the right wrds in anther language, yur brain is frced t inhibit yur mther tngue. Yu just can't let yur first language “take ver”. This prcess, called cgnitive inhibitin, helps imprve yur brain functin. Repeating this prcess makes yur brain mre resistant t diseases like dementia. The mre yu challenge yur brain, the better it functins, even if yur brain health starts t decline
Hwever, evidence fr the benefits f learning a secnd language in yur 60s is weaker. Research by Dr. Le Antniu fund that lder Italians wh tk English lessns fr fur mnths didn't see any difference in their cgnitin scres, but peple wh didn't saw their scres decline. Prf. Diana Smith's 2023 studies fund similar results.
Researchers ffered a few ptential explanatins fr their disappinting results One is that the participants were highly mtivated vlunteers, prbably f high cgnitive level fr their age, making it hard t see any imprvements. “When chsing participants, we have t be careful. Are they really typical f the ppulatin?” said Dr. Judith Ware. Anther is that the language interventins(干预) were perhaps t shrt. These studies have used language lessns that “were very different in their length and frequency”, said Prf. Laura Grssman.
T Dr. Antniu, the limited findings are nt entirely surprising. N ne wuld say that learning a new language fr six mnths wuld be the same as having used tw languages fr yur entire life. But he des think that language lessns can prvide cgnitive benefits by being cgnitively stimulating.
Perhaps mre imprtant, Prf. Grssman said, learning anther language ffers ther ptential advantages, like traveling r cnnecting with new cmmunities. My father, fr example, has remained pen friends with his first teacher and traveled t France numerus times.
And at 76, he's as sharp as ever.
      32. What happens in the prcess f “cgnitive inhibitin”?
      A. Memry imprves.B. Brain health wrsens.
C Dementia is cured.D. Native language is held back.
      33. Which is a pssible explanatin fr the disappinting research results?
A The interventin f the first language.
      B. The great length f the language curse.
      C. The pr chice f research participants.
      D. The age difference f the research subjects.
      34. Whse pinin des the authr supprt by mentining his father's experience?
      A. Le Antniu's.B. Diana Smith's.
      C. Judith Ware's.D. Laura Grssman's.
35、 Which f the fllwing is a suitable title fr the text?
      A. Is It Never T Late T Learn A New Language?
      B. Can Learning A New Language Delay Dementia?
C Why Des My Father Start Learning A New Language?
      D. Hw Des Learning A New Language Benefit An Aging Brain?

      第二节

T my surprise, mst f them replied with warm smiles and sincere thanks. An ld man even praised the salad, saying it was the mst delicius he'd had in weeks. A little girl held ut her dirty hand and gave me a candy, which made my heart melt. I chatted briefly with sme f them, listening t their simple stries. They weren't dangerus at all; they were just peple in need f kindness.
I was s happy that I had earned my service hurs in this way. This experience changed my views cmpletely. I used t take my cmfrtable life fr granted, but nw I realize hw lucky I am.
