The scientists are nw explring whether ghst csts affect interactins with rbts and AI. “If AI is verly generus, will peple imagine ghst csts?” Vnasch says. “Peple tend t humanize AI and treat AI agents as if they have a mind, when bviusly they dn’t.”

Ants in Flrida perfrm life- saving surgery n their peers, scientists have discvered. They are the nly knwn animals besides humans t d this.
Researchers fund that Flrida carpenter ants identify leg wunds n their nestmates and treat them with either cleaning r amputatin (截肢). The study was published in Current Bilgy.“When we’ re talking abut amputatin behavir, this is literally the nly case in which an advanced and systematic amputatin f an individual by anther member f its species ccurs in the animal kingdm,”said lead authr Erik Frank, a behaviral eclgist at the University fWürzburg in Germany.
In 2023, Frank’s team discvered that African ants treat infected wunds with antimicrbial (杀菌的) substances frm their rgans. Flrida carpenter ants (木匠蚁) d nt have such rgans, s the researchers wanted t learn hw they treat wunds. They examined tw types f leg injuries: laceratins n the femur (大腿骨) and thse n the tibia (lwer leg). Ants treated femur wunds by cleaning, fllwed by amputatin using repeated bites. Tibia wunds were nly cleaned.
The surgeries imprved survival significantly. Fr femur injuries, survival rse frm under40% t 90-95% with amputatin. Fr tibia injuries, cleaning raised survival frm 15% t 75%.
Amputatin likely wrks fr femur wunds because muscle damage slws bld flw, giving ants time t act. In tibia injuries, infectins spread faster due t less muscle, making amputatin t slw t help.“The ants are able t diagnse a wund, see if it’s infected r bacteria- free and treat it accrdingly — the nly medical system that can cmpare that wuld be the human ne,”Frank said.
The ants’ ability appears t be built- in. Researchers are nw studying whether ther ant species withut special rgans can perfrm similar surgeries.

If a stranger ffered yu a free ckie, yu might eat it. But what if they als ffered $2? Yu might decline and think, “Smething smells fishy.” A study fund peple ften reject ffers like “free mney,” unusually high salaries, r cheap services because they seem “t gd t be true.” The research bridges ecnmics and psychlgy t explain why financial rewards backfire.
In the initial experiment, nearly 40% f participants ate a free ckie, cmpared with abut 20% f thse als ffered $2. “Peple typically imagine smething unpleasant happened t the ckie,” says study lead authr Andrew J. Vnasch at the University f Canterbury.
Nine further experiments with ver 4,000 participants explred similar situatins, such as ffers f mney fr rides hme, unusually high wages, and cheap flights. In all cases, greater financial gain reduced acceptance rates beynd a certain limit. Vnasch explains this ges against the “standard ecnmic mdel,” which assumes peple always seek t maximize benefits. Instead, ffers are viewed as scial interactins where vilatins (违背) f nrms, like unexplained genersity, create “phantm csts” — imagined negative results that lwer an ffer’s “psychlgical value.”
Rachel McCly, a psychlgist at the University f Reading, says vergenersity may be avided t escape feeling indebted, supprting the saying “there’s n such thing as a free lunch.”
Anther experiment fund distrustful individuals inferred mre ghst csts. Researchers shwed this effect culd be mitigated by prviding a reasn fr the deal. The “cheapflights” experiment included a cnditin where seats were stated t be uncmfrtable.“Uncmfrtable seats aren’t typically a selling pint,” Vnasch says. “But telling peple the seats were uncmfrtable made them mre willing t take them because it was a reasnable explanatin.”
The scientists are nw explring whether ghst csts affect interactins with rbts and AI. “If AI is verly generus, will peple imagine ghst csts?” Vnasch says. “Peple tend t humanize AI and treat AI agents as if they have a mind, when bviusly they dn’t.”
32. Why did fewer peple accept the ckie with $2?
A. They suspected a hidden trick.
B. They already had enugh mney.
C. They disliked the taste f ckies.
D. They wished t avid future debts.
33. Accrding t the text, what leads t “phantm csts”?
A. Memries f past unpleasant events.
B. Generus acts withut clear reasns.
C. A persn’s naturally questining nature.
D. Physical discmfrt in the envirnment.
34. What des “mitigated” in paragraph 5 mean?
