Can dctrs make better cancer treatment decisins if they cnsult fish? Previus studies have shwn that zebrafish avatars culd help identify cancer treatments. Rita Fir, a develpmental bilgist and her clleagues nw want t determine whether that ability can benefit patients.
Zebrafish avatars are tiny, fast-grwing mdels f individual cancer patients created by transplanting the patient’s wn tumr (肿瘤) cells int 2-day-ld zebrafish embrys (胚胎). These tiny fish then act as living substitutes (替代品) fr the patient, allwing researchers t test multiple cancer drugs r radiatin n the patient’s tumr cells within 4-7 days - far quicker than traditinal muse mdels.
In a 2024 reprt in Nature Cmmunicatins, the scientists generated avatars fr 55 patients and putting the fish n the same type f chem-therapy the peple received. Fr 50 f the patients, the fish “predicted” the result f treatment. An added benefit, Fir says, is that avatars can reveal key characteristics f tumrs such as whether they are likely t spread.
Zebrafish are mre similar t humans than cell cultures (细胞系培养) and far cheaper t raise than mice. The small, transparent embrys are als easier t analyze, says Sfia de Oliveira, a bilgist at the Albert Einstein Cllege f Medicine. “Yu can visualize the whle animal under the micrscpe,” she explains, “and easily determine the spread f cancer cells.”
In the clinical trial, Fir and her team will test that prmise by separating cancer cells frm the fluid that builds up in the stmach f peple whse cancer cells have spread utside the riginal site and is usually drained as part f treatment. “We are nt ding an extra prcedure n the patients,” she says. The cells will then be implanted int the fish embrys. Instead f testing experimental drugs, as many ther clinical trials d, the study will determine which cmbinatin f treatments wrks best. Mst f the patients will receive medicatins suggested by the zebrafish results.
32. What are zebrafish avatars?
A. Mdels f muse embrys.B. Radiatin n the tumr cells.
C. Drugs fr multiple cancers.D. Replacements fr cancer patients.
33. Hw d zebrafish avatars help dctrs with cancer treatments?
A. By frecasting treatment results.
B. By predicting where tumrs will spread.
C. By killing tumr cells in cancer patients.
D. By transplanting zebrafish cells int humans.
34. What makes zebrafish an ideal species fr cancer research?
A. Their similarity t cell cultures.
B. Their lw cst and ease f analysis.
C. Their small sizes and dark embrys.
D. Their cmplex appearance and structure.
35. What is the primary gal f the clinical trial led by Fir and her team?
A. T develp new experimental drugs fr cancers.
B. T test the safety f chem-therapy n zebrafish.
C. T separate cancer cells frm the fluid f patients.
D. T identify the ideal cmbinatin f cancer treatments.

Pssible versin 1
Gd mrning, everyne. On behalf f ur grup, I am here t present ur discussin n whether scial media is beneficial fr enhancing friendships. Our grup hld the view that scial media is beneficial fr strengthening friendships. We have reached this cnclusin based n tw main reasns.
Firstly, scial media effectively bridges gegraphical distances. It allws us t maintain daily cntact with friends wh live far away. Thrugh sharing updates, we can stay invlved in each ther’s lives, which helps sustain and deepen ur bnds. Secndly, it helps us find and cnnect with like-minded peple. Online interest grups enable us t discver new friends wh share ur passins. This cmmn grund prvides a strng fundatin fr building meaningful and supprtive friendships.
Therefre, we believe that scial media serves as a valuable tl fr bth maintaining existing friendships and frming new cnnectins. Thanks fr listening.
Pssible versin 2
Gd mrning, everyne. Our grup believes that scial media is mre likely t harm than enhance genuine friendships. The reasns are as fllws.
Firstly, scial media ften creates a false sense f cnnectin rather than fstering deep bnds. While we see cuntless updates and likes, these interactins are mstly superficial/skin-deep. They lack the emtinal depth essential fr true understanding and empathy. A “like” can never replace a heartfelt cnversatin r shared laughter. Secndly, the culture f cmparisn and perfectin n scial platfrms can create pressure and jealusy. Peple tend t pst nly the highlights f their lives, making thers feel inadequate r left ut. Thus, friendships are less likely t last.
In shrt, we believe scial media keep us physically cnnected at the cst f genuineness and emtinal depth in friendships. Thank yu.
Pssible versin 3
Gd mrning, everyne. Our grup takes a balanced view: scial media can be beneficial fr friendships, but its value depends entirely n hw we use it.
On the psitive side, scial media helps maintain cnnectins that wuld therwise fade. It allws us t keep in tuch with ld friends wh have mved away and share life updates cnveniently. Additinally, it helps us find cmmunities f peple wh share ur interests, which can lead t meaningful new friendships.
Hwever, we als recgnize its drawbacks. Online interactins ften lack the depth f face-t-face cmmunicatin. The cnstant expsure t carefully selected highlights may smetimes lead t unnecessary cmparisn. If we rely slely n scial media fr cnnectin, ur relatinships might becme mre superficial.
Therefre, we believe scial media is a useful tl t enhance friendships nly when cmbined with genuine/ in-persn interactins. Thank yu.
