A grup f researchers analyzed data frm 9,971 children participating in a lng-term study. These kids were entering kindergarten in the United States frm 2010 t 2011, and during kindergarten, their parents reprted the frequency with which their children perfrmed husewrk. Then, in the third grade, these children were given an investigatin abut their interest r ability in studies, scial relatinships, and life satisfactin, and they cmpleted direct schl-related assessments fr reading, math, and science.
The results shwed that the frequency f husewrk in kindergarten was psitively assciated with a child’s idea f scial, academic, and life satisfactin abilities in the third grade, independent f sex, family incme, and parent educatin.
Anther study lked at children’s husewrk behavir and fund the fllwing: Mst children in the study spent surprisingly little time helping arund the huse and did fewer tasks than they reprted in interviews. The researchers fund that ffering the child an allwance in exchange fr ding husewrk was nt an effective encuragement and that children in families with access t paid hme help tended t be less helpful than children in families withut. The authrs suggested that while mst children are aware that their wrking parents need help, in sme families, changeable and unclear expectatins frm parents negatively affect children’s participatin in husehld wrk.

Each day, there shuld be a few things teenagers d arund the huse that benefit everyne. They can ck a dish fr dinner, d the dishes and s n. This includes bys as well as girls.
Ding this will result in resistance sme f the time. And it will take a lt f parental energy. But it will pay ff. Just like the studies have said.

In a study published earlier this year in Psychlgical Science, a team f researchers reprted a link between spken fluency and death risk. The grup, led by Pal Ghisetta f the University f Geneva, made use f data frm the Berlin Aging Study.
Between 1990 and 2009, investigatrs assessed the thinking abilities f mre than 500 participants wh were 70 years ld r mre when the study began. Specifically, the researchers measured their “sensry speed, event-based memry, spken fluency, and spken knwledge” All f the study’s participants have nw passed away, and researchers can use the results t see if any f these measures are predictive f hw lng the participants lived.
Smewhat surprisingly, ut f the fur thinking measures mentined abve, nly ne was related t decreased death risk: spken fluency. Specifically, Ghisetta and his team fund “an almst nine-year predicted difference in survival time between the study participants with high r lw values n spken fluency.”
The study supprts earlier research n this tpic. In 2016, fr example, researchers fund an assciatin between reading and living lnger. They reprted that participants wh read bks had a 23-mnth “survival advantage” cmpared t nn-readers.
But hw much reading was necessary fr such an assciatin t be bserved? The researchers said just 30 minutes a day was sufficient. But they stressed that the strngest assciatin in this study was fund fr participants wh primarily read bks as ppsed t newspapers and magazines.
Why might reading fictin bring advantages nt seen with reading factual material? One pssibility is that the labr required t create a fictinal wrld in ne’s head, alng with the effrt required t keep track f wh said what, and wh knws what, can have beneficial thinking effects.
Still, the develpment f ne’s spken fluency and the reading f fictin are nt a cure-all that can magicaly stave ff the effects f aging n the mind and bdy. But evidence is grwing that specific thinking abilities and behavirs are assciated with a lt f benefits, including a lnger life.
      32. What d we knw abut Ghisetta’s study?
      A. It lasted fr a really lng perid f times.
      B. It invlved mre than a thusand peple.
      C. It tracked participants frm yung t ld.
      D. It fcused n spken fluency f the elderly.
      33. What is paragraph 3 mainly abut cncerning Ghisetta’s study?
      A. Its majr limitatins.B. Its supprting evidence.
      C. Its research methd.D. Its significant findings.
      34. Why is fictin mre helpful than factual reading?
      A. It strengthens spken fluency.B. It requires mre thinking effrt.
      C. It brings emtinal relaxatin.D. It imprves event-based memry.
      35. What des the underlined part “stave ff” in the last paragraph mean?
      A. ignre.B. Assess.C. Prevent.D. Predict.

Finally, train yur brain t recgnize when it has wandered. The mment yu ntice yurself rereading the same line, silently say “back” and return t the text. 40 After a week, yu will catch yurself earlier; after a mnth, the number f “backs” drps sharply. Sn yu will find yurself reading faster and remembering mre.
      A. Therefre, create a single-task battlefield.
      B. This simple actin acts like a mental seat-belt.

Le had always been the quietest by in Mrs. Andersn’s class. During lively break times, while thers were jking and sharing stries, Le was usually fund in his crner, absrbed in a bk. It wasn’t that he disliked his classmates; it was the secret he carried like a heavy stne in his chest—he stuttered(口吃). The fear f his wrds getting unclear, f seeing impatience r mckery(嘲笑)in thers’ eyes, built a"wall" arund him. T his classmates, he was just the shy, perhaps slightly strange, new by.
When Mrs. Andersn annunced the annual class speech cmpetitin that everyne had t take part in, Le’s heart drpped. The thught f standing in frnt f the whle class made his hands turn cld. He spent sleepless nights imagining the disaster. He even cnsidered pretending illness t avid it, but a small, determined part f him wanted t be heard, t cnnect with thers beynd the pages f his bks.
The frightening day arrived. One by ne, cnfident students walked t the frnt, delivering their speeches n varius tpics with ease. With each name called, Le’s anxiety grew. When his turn came, the walk t the frnt felt like a mile. The classrm was quiet, all eyes n him. He held his nte cards tightly. As he hesitated, a few uncertain giggles(咯咯地笑) came frm the back f the rm.
His face turned red. He pened his muth, but nly a weak, silent breath escaped. Fear set in. Just as he was abut t aplgize and ran away, he lked up and met the eyes f Sarah, wh sat in the frnt rw. She wasn’t laughing. Instead, she ffered a warm, friendly smile and a small, firm nd f encuragement. In that simple, quiet sign, Le felt a bit f hpe.

N ne laughed at the pauses r the stumbles. In that cean f acceptance, Le felt the heavy stne in his chest finally disappeared. He had nt just given a speech; he had fund his vice.
