Then, thrugh the swirling snw, I saw a figure walking steadily tward me. I wanted t call ut, but hesitated, unsure f whether t trust a stranger. But as he drew clser, his calm gaze and quiet presence sparked a flicker f hpe. “Are yu alright?” he asked sftly, his vice warm despite the cld.
“I’m lst,” I admitted, my vice trembling. “I can’t find my friends, and there’s n signal n my phne.”
He ndded knwingly. “The strm makes it hard t see. Yu’re lucky I fund yu.”
“Hw d I get back?” I asked, my vice shaky.
“Fllw me” he said simply. “I knw this area well.”
We walked fr what felt like hurs. Suddenly, I saw the faint utline f peple in the distance. Relief washed ver me like a tidal wave as I realised it was my grup. I hugged them tightly and tld them abut my helper but when I lked back t thank him nce mre, he was nwhere t be fund. Fr a mment I wndered if I had imagined the whle thing. I never saw the man again but that brief encunter taught me smething precius: in ur darkest mments f being lst and scared, it’s nt just wh yu knw, but the unexpected kindness f a stranger wh shws up that matters mst.

A study published in Nature n July 16th ffers the strngest evidence that the urge t sleep is caused by a build-up f electrns in the mitchndria(线粒体) f certain brain cells. If true, sleep may have riginally emerged as a way f repairing mitchndria, with its ther benefits evlving later.
Mitchndria, which exist in almst all human and animal cells, supply energy by taking electrns frm fuel mlecules (供能分子) btained frm fd. Hwever, sme electrns leak ut during this prcess. These leaked electrns react with xygen t create harmful by-prducts — if these substances build up, they will damage cells. The new study pints ut that when sleep-cntrl neurns detect t much mitchndrial damage, they cause sleep. These neurns wrk like circuit-breakers: they make the brain fall int sleep befre t many electrns accumulate, preventing further harm. Sleep then restres the balance f electrns and fixes damaged mitchndria.
T test this idea, scientists did experiments n fruit flies. First, they labelled the flies’ sleep-cntrl neurns (called drsal fan-shaped bdy neurns, dFBNs) with a glwing prtein. Then, they disrupted the flies’ sleep by keeping them in cnstant mtin fr 12 hurs.
After the experiment, the scientists bserved the dFBNs under a micrscpe. They fund that the mitchndria in these neurns had brken apart — a sign that electrns had caused damage. But nce the flies gt sme sleep, the mitchndria jined back tgether, just like fixing a brken bject.
Ivana Rsenzweig, a specialist in sleep neurscience, describes the findings as a “significant cnceptual shift”. Since energy supply is linked t sleep in many species, electrn build-up may als cause sleep pressure in humans. The study’s authrs nte that peple with mitchndrial disrders ften feel unusually sleepy, and they hpe the research will help slve sleep disrders and tiredness-related prblems.
      8. What can we knw frm the first tw paragraphs?
      A. Sleep may initially fix mitchndria.
      B. Mitchndria take electrns frm fd.
      C. Electrns leakage damages cells directly.
      D. Neurns cause sleep when electrns leak.
      9. Why des the authr mentin “fruit flies” in paragraph 3?
      A. T explain a rule.B. T clarify a cncept.
      C. T make a predictin.D. T cnfirm an assumptin.
      10. What can we infer frm Ivana Rsenzweig’s cmment?
      A. Electrn build-up nly affects sleep in fruit flies.
      B. Previus studies n sleep pressure were cmpletely wrng.
      C. The study changes the way peple understand sleep causes.
      D. Mitchndrial disrders are the main cause f sleep prblems.
      11. What is the main purpse f the passage?
      A. T explain hw t imprve sleep quality.
      B. T intrduce a study n the cause f sleep urge.
      C. T discuss the link between diet and sleep health.
      D. T cmpare different theries f mitchndrial repair.
      D
Why wuld a meterlgist cncern herself with the rcks beneath her feet? Fr gd reasn, if she lives in Iceland. The natin straddles (横跨) the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a bundary between tw f Earth’s crustal (地壳的) plates which are drifting apart. That allws ht, liquid rck called magma t well up frm the depths. Iceland als sits just belw the Arctic circle and enjys glacier-prmting temperatures. As a cnsequence f these facts, it is hme t 34 active vlcanes, half f which are buried under ice up t 1km thick.
As the climate warms and this ice melts, the vlcanes belw may becme mre unstable. Michelle Parks f the Icelandic Meterlgical Office is leading a three-year prject that will try t determine whether, in future, less ice culd mean mre fire. Glaciers bear dwn upn Earth’s crust. The pressure they create squeezing the underlying rck, raising its melting pint. Remve the ice and the rck rebunds (the land arund sme ice-bund vlcanes is rising by as much as 3cm a year), easing the pressure. That means the melting pint drps, enhancing the frmatin f magma, which then erupts frm vlcanes as lava.
Early gelgical data cllected by Dr Parks suggest tw r three times mre magma is being prduced beneath Iceland than was the case a century ag. Hw that plays ut will depend n hw the magma reservirs beneath individual vlcanes are reshaped by the rebunding land. Sme vlcanes may erupt mre frequently; thers, less but mre vilently. This may already be happening, with vlcanes like Grimsvtn and Bardarbunga shwing increased activities.
Histrical evidence supprts this link; vlcanic eruptins surged after the last ice age’s glaciers retreated. This phenmenn isn’t unique t Iceland; it affects Antarctica, Alaska, and the Andes. While sme areas are remte, the Andes are near ppulus castal regins. Millins culd face risks frm disrupted water supplies r mudslides. A single eruptin, like Eyjafjallajkull in 2010, can cause glbal disruptin, prving that the cnsequences f melting ice extend far beynd the fire itself.
      12. What can be inferred abut Iceland frm the first paragraph?
      A. It is the nly place with active vlcanes.
      B. It has the wrld’s fastest-melting glaciers.
      C. Its vlcanic eruptins are the mst dcumented.
D Its unique gelgy creates vlcanes under thick ice.
      13. Hw des melting ice affect vlcanes?
      A. It cls the magma directly.
      B. It causes the land t sink rapidly.
      C. It instantly gives rise t vilent eruptins.
      D. It reduces pressure, prmting magma frmatin.
      14. What might be a future vlcanic trend?
      A. All vlcanes will erupt mre vilently.
      B. Magma prductin will stp in mst areas.
      C. Activity patterns will vary amng vlcanes.
      D. Eruptins will becme less frequent glbally.
      15. What des the example f Eyjafjallajkull in 2010 shw?
      A. Iceland has many dangerus vlcanes.
      B. Vlcanic eruptins are cmmn in Iceland.
      C. The cnsequences f melting ice are far-reaching.
      D. The Andes are als at risk frm vlcanic eruptins.
