Algae (藻类) has plentiful prtein, vitamins and minerals, ffering meaningful nutritinal benefits. Led by researchers frm the University f Califrnia, San Dieg, the new study gives an explanatin fr algae being a valuable fd surce f the future.
Dr Stephen Mayfield, ne f the study’s c-authrs, said, “Many f us have knwn the ptential f algae fr fd fr years, and have been wrking n it as a fd surce, but nw, with climate change, defrestatin, and a ppulatin f eight billin peple, mst peple realize that the wrld simply has t becme mre efficient in prtein prductin.”
Algae refers t a brad range f underwater rganisms but this study fcuses specifically n the cultivatin f micralgae. The study cites research frm 2014 that fund “Algae can annually prduce 167 times mre useful bimass (生物量) than crn when using the same amunt f land.” Sme algae mdels predict that existing algae strains (菌株) culd ptentially replace 25% f Eurpean prtein cnsumptin when grwn n available land that isn’t currently used fr traditinal crps.
Sme algae strains can grw in salt r brackish water, and even wastewater frm dairy farms, and they can be prduced in a range f lcatins, frm pen-air pnds t abve-grund bireactrs. Mrever, cmpared t traditinal crps like crn and sybeans, algae cultivatin requires far less water per tn f bimass prduced.
It’ll be imprtant t cnvince the public that eating algae is a gd idea. “Algae can be a very healthy fd, but we just dn’t have a histry f eating it; but nce peple try it, they usually learn t like it,” said Mayfield. “Mst US and Eurpean dietary health studies shw we need t reduce the amunt f red animal meat we eat, and algae culd be a great way t get healthy plant prtein int ur diets.”
This research is an interesting initial attempt int algae’s ptential rle as a future fd surce. Once it is thught f as a glbal fd crp, it culd be treated much the same way, imprved in clr, taste, and prtein cntent.

The future f human flight arrived quietly at a time when n ne was clcking up air miles. It was June 2020 and the skies were unusually empty, but dwn n the grund, smething huge was happening with a small aircraft. The Eurpean Unin Aviatin (航空) Safety Agency(EASA), certified a tw-seat plane made in Slvenia as safe t fly. Within a few years, the plane called Pipistrel Velis Electr was certified in the UK, the US and elsewhere.
“The achievement represents a grwing interest and trust in the reliability f electric planes,” says Dr Tine Tmazic, directr f engineering and prgrams at the cmpany Pipistrel. “We recently cmpleted prductin f ur 100th Velis Electr, marking a significant milestne fr Pipistrel and the industry.”
“The aviatin industry is imprving its carbn emissins (排放) by nearly 2% per passenger mile per year,” says Dr Guy Grattn, assciate prfessr f aviatin at Granfield University in the UK. Hwever, the glbal demand fr air transprt is estimated t duble by 2040, which means that while ther industries are shwing meaningful signs f decarbnizing, aviatin is n track t increase its ttal emissins. “S, we need t prevent aviatin becming a majrity plluter,” Grattn says. “Nw, hw can we d that?”
The Velis Electr is leading the way, but the first electric planes aren’t designed t replace large passenger aircraft. Instead, these pineer aircraft are designed specifically fr flight training, ffering just 50 minutes f flight time with 20 minutes reserve and a range f 185 kilmeters. It’s pwered by a 58kW electric mtr with tw lightweight lithium batteries.
Traditinal batteries are either t heavy r t ht t be practical fr an aircraft. Pipistrel’s system, hwever, makes the whle pwertrain safe, light and efficient. The battery weighs 70 kg and the whle aircraft weighs just 425 kg when empty.
Pilts dn’t need an additinal license t fly Velis Electr, but they’ll ntice differences. “The aircraft delivers pwer withut hesitatin,” Tmazic explains. “It uses a simplified user interface in a cckpit (驾驶舱) that maintains the same lk and feel f its cnventinally-pwered planes. The cckpit is als much quieter than with cnventinal aircraft.”
      12. What des the underlined part “smething huge” in paragraph 1 refer t?
      A. The small plane gt very ppular.B. The small plane was being prduced.
      C. The small plane had imprved greatly.D. The small plane received fficial apprval.
      13. Why is Dr Guy Grattn mentined in paragraph 3?

      B. T tell the develpment f Velis Electr.
      C. T prve the grwing demand fr air travel.
      D. T stress the aviatin’s cntributin t envirnment.
      14. What d we knw abut the design f Velis Electr?
      A. It invlves huge batteries.B. It aims t drive large aircraft.
      C. It is based n glbal cperatin.D. It is intended fr shrt flights.
      15. Hw des the authr mainly describe the advantages f Pipistrel’s batteries?
      A. By giving examples.B. By making cmparisns.
      C. By presenting detailed figures.D. By shwing scientific analyses.
