Fr decades, a dminant thery abut why birds sing at dawn — called the “dawn chrus” — has been that they can be heard farther and mre clearly at that time. That’s because sund travels faster in damp air and it’s mre damp early in the mrning.
But scientists in India cmbed thrugh vcal (声音的) recrdings f birds in the rainfrest. They say they didn’t find evidence t back up this idea.
The researchers didn’t definitively pint t ne reasn fr why the dawn chrus is happening, but they fund supprt fr ideas that the early mrning sunds relate t birds marking their territry after being inactive at night, and cmmunicating abut finding fd.
The team analyzed recrdings frm audi recrders placed at 43 lcatins in the Western Ghats muntain range in suthern India, which is knwn as a bidiversity htspt. They examined sunds f what they determined were 69 different species f birds. They studied recrdings frm the hurs arund dawn and the hurs arund dusk t cmpare activity.
Unsurprisingly t anyne wh has been wken up by bird calls, the “vast majrity” f species they studied had “significantly higher” vcal activity at dawn cmpared t dusk. They fund that birds that were mre territrial, and thse with an mnivrus (杂食的) diet, were mre vcal at dawn rather than dusk.
And when it cmes t fd, birds are engaging in a lt f cmmunicatin abut where resurces are, r ften whether there is a predatr (天敌) nearby. They speculate that a reasn that mnivrus birds have a “marginally higher” level f vcal activity at dawn is because they ften participate in flck “hunting parties” that mre ften happen at dawn. But as t why thse hunting parties happen at dawn t begin with, they aren’t sure.
The researchers nte they nly studied birds in ne particular trpical regin in India. They didn’t bserve the birds visually, and didn’t recrd exactly when dawn and dusk started. They just used estimated times.
12. What is a lng-held belief abut the “dawn chrus”?
A. Birds sing at dawn t attract thers.
B. Birds mark their territry in the mrning.
C. The mrning birds sing at dawn t cmmunicate.
D. The mrning birds can be heard ver a lng distance.
13. What have researchers fund recently?
A. Birds are nt all mnivrus.
B. Birds tend t sing in the early night.
C. Mst birds sing mre in the mrning than at dusk.
D. Mst birds are mre territrial at night than in the day.
14. What might the birds d in their “hunting parties”?
A. Exchange infrmatin.B. Celebrate their harvest.
C. Mark their hunting territry.D. Share hunting experience.
15. What is a limitatin f the researchers’ study in the text?
A. It used previus data.B. It lacked universality.
C. It nly analyzed several birds.D. It was dne nly by bservatin.
