A few years ag, I was living with my grandmther while lking fr wrk. One evening she asked fr the phne number f a ride-hailing (叫车) service she’d heard abut. I explained it was app-nly. After a mment’s thught, my 80-year-ld grandmther replied, “Then why dn’t yu make smething like that?”

They culd simply call a number and use a vice menu t bk rides, rder fd, schedule deliveries, manage medicatins, r request hme help. This simple, phne-based system became the cre f ur cmpany, enabling senirs t live safely and independently at hme.
When my grandmther finally tk her first ride using ur service, she was s prud f me, her lved grandsn. She really appreciated hw prfessinal and kind the drivers were, especially since they already understd the kind f help senirs might need. She quickly became ur biggest supprter, enthusiastically telling everyne abut it— frm her friends in the bk club t ther scial grups.
Wrd spread quickly, and sn her cmmunity had welcmed hundreds f new users— all thanks t ne prud grandma. She became the real inspiratin behind a service that gave many senirs their freedm and cnfidence back. My c-funder and I started giving talks at lcal retirement cmmunities, sharing hw the service wrked and hw it culd help.
Fr many f ur users, having access t reliable transprtatin means they can cntinue t live n their wn. A missed ride isn’t just an incnvenience— it culd mean missing a crucial dctr’s appintment r even risking their health. As I ften explain, even small things, like getting the wrng type f milk, can becme a real prblem fr smene wh can’t easily pp ut t the stre.

Marine (海洋的) animals ften travel mre than a thusand miles acrss pen cean waters, surprising many scientists wh study their wanderings. These lng ceanic jurneys create unexpected links between cuntries and cntinents. Scientists frm The University f Queensland (UQ) and Duke University have intrduced an interactive database called Migratry Cnnectivity in the Ocean (MiCO) t map these mvements. MiCO cllects data n 109 animal species, including whales and sea turtles. Each entry in this system shws patterns that cnnect natinal waters with areas beynd them.
Many migratry animals mve acrss natinal bundaries, s effrts in ne cuntry might be undne by gaps in anther. High Seas Treaty negtiatins, which address waters beynd natinal limits, add t the urgency f cperating n glbal management practices.
MiCO’s mdels sptlight eclgical cnnectivity, a term describing hw different parts f the cean are linked thrugh the mvements f living beings. This cnnectivity shws that n ne natin can safeguard migratry species n its wn.
Partners frm acrss the wrld cntributed tagging (加标签) and tracking results t feed int this new system. Tagged animals helped researchers identify imprtant areas where they lk fr fd and build nests, as well as areas where different species verlap (部分重叠). Users can explre interactive maps t see hw a shark ff the cast f ne regin might eventually pass near a fishing zne run by anther. This infrmatin is key fr reginal fisheries management rganisatins, which guide sustainable fishing agreements between multiple cuntries.
Sme f the species in MiCO rely n tw r three very distinct envirnments during their lives. A few g frm the trpics t clder waters, while thers ram acrss entire cean basins befre returning t have their yung. Data frm tags attached t animals reveal hw an individual might swim thusands f miles and then end up near the same nesting spt it used in past years.
“This tl cnnects almst 2,000 crucial habitats and sptlights the imprtance f crss-bundary cperatin,” said Dr Bentley, lead authr frm UQ’s Centre fr Bidiversity and Cnservatin Science. “It helps nn-scientists appreciate hw each small area fits int a much larger picture.”
8. Why d the scientists establish the MiCO database?
A. T recrd the activity f marine animals.
B. T seek an apprach t marine prtectin.
C. T identify new species in unexplred ceans.
D. T track the lng-distance jurneys f cean species.
9. Hw d tagged animals cntribute t the MiCO system?
A. They help lcate illegal fishing.B. They detect their critical habitats.
C. They measure temperature variatin.D. They predict future migratin speeds.
10. What des the underlined wrd “ram” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Draw.B. Bst.C. Travel.D. Pursue.
11. What key functin f the tl did Dr Bentley emphasize?
A. highlighting internatinal cperatin.B. Cunting endangered species precisely.
C. Replacing the need fr scientific research.D. Creating new prtected areas in the cean.

Fr the first time, a new study has revealed that the timing and cntext f eye cntact—nt just the act itself—play a crucial rle in hw we understand and respnd t thers, including rbts. Led by cgnitive neurscientist Dr Nathan Caruana, researchers frm the HAVIC Lab at Flinders University asked 137 participants t cmplete a blck-building task with a virtual (模拟的) partner. They discvered that the mst effective way t signal a request was thrugh a specific gaze sequence (注视顺序): lking at an bject, making eye cntact, then lking back at the same bject. This timing made peple mst likely t interpret the gaze as a call fr help.
Dr Caruana said that identifying these key patterns in eye cntact has ffered new insights int hw we prcess scial cues in face-t-face interactins, paving the way fr smarter and mre human-centered technlgy.
“We fund that it’s nt just hw ften smene lks at yu, r if they lk at yu last in a sequence f eye mvements, but the cntext f their eye mvements that makes that behavir appear cmmunicative and relevant,” said Dr Caruana. “And what’s fascinating is that peple respnded the same way whether the gaze behavir was bserved frm a human r a rbt. Our findings have helped t decde ne f ur mst natural behavirs and hw it can be used t build better cnnectins—whether yu’re talking t a teammate, a rbt, r smene wh cmmunicates differently. ”
The authrs say the research can directly infrm hw we build scial rbts and virtual assistants, and that it als has brader implicatins beynd technlgy.
“Understanding hw eye cntact wrks culd imprve nn-verbal cmmunicatin training in high-pressure settings like sprts, defence, and nisy wrkplaces,” said Dr Caruana. “It culd als supprt peple wh rely heavily n visual cues, such as thse wh are hearing-impaired r autistic. By understanding eye cntact better, we can create technlgies and training that help peple cnnect mre clearly and cnfidently.”
12. Hw did the researchers cnduct their study?
A. By ding an experiment.B. By cmpeting fr a task.
C. By gazing at a virtual partner.D. By interpreting a call fr help.
13. What makes gaze behavir appear meaningful?
A. The speed f gaze shifts.B. The duratin f eye cntact.
C. The number f eye cntact.D. The cntext f eye mvements.
14. Which field culd benefit frm the findings?
A. Literary creatin.B. Defence cmmunicatin.
C. Financial market analysis.D. Industrial machinery design.
15. What can be the best title fr the text?
A. The Cntext f Eye Cntact
B. The Design f Virtual Assistants
C. The Hidden Pwer f Eye Cntact
D. The timing f Cmmunicating with Others
