When yu get a less desirable gift. peple like t say, “It’s the thught that cunts.” But with my mther’s gifts, yu’ve really gt t wnder, “What thught was that exactly?”
My mther’s presents are never given t be mean; they are always presented with wide-eyed, inncent excitement. “D yu like it?” she always asks expectantly, and we nd ur heads while we try t figure ut what “it” is. Over the years, my mther’s Christmas presents have becme well-knwn fr the amusement — and smetimes hrrr — that they culd cause.
Fr instance, my mther nce gave me a pair f bright red underwear, the kind that yu see little girls wearing under their fancy dresses in ld-timey pictures. Several years ag, she spent days wrking n a handmade clay (泥土) sculpture:a lvingly crafted, dd interpretatin f my head. I tk the clay head hme and placed it n my bathrm cunter as instructed. I sn discvered that few things terrify my tw-year-ld child mre than a small, strange-lking versin f his mther’s head staring at him while he was sitting n the tilet.
Smene asked me what I hped t get fr this Christmas frm my mther. “Oh nthing,” I explained. Yu dn’t “hpe” fr gifts frm her. They’re cming — whether yu want them r nt.
But the weird, clueless, endless and enthusiastic lve that cmes with my mther’s gifts is the same lve with which she raised me, and it’s hers and hers alne. She has always lved me fr my bring persnality uncnditinally, and I — with all my eyerlls and sighs by the Christmas tree — lve her uncnditinally as well. There’s n better gift t give a child than the knwledge that they can be weird r awkward and still feel uncnditinally lved.

In business, there’s a speed gap: It’s the difference between hw imprtant a firm’s leaders say speed is t their cmpetitive strategy and hw fast the cmpany actually mves. That gap is significant regardless f regin, industry, cmpany size, r strategic emphasis. Organizatins fearful f lsing their cmpetitive advantage spend much time and many resurces lking fr ways t pick up the pace.
In ur study f 343 businesses, the cmpanies that chse t g, g, g t try t gain an edge ended up with lwer sales and perating incmes than thse that paused at key mments t make sure they were n the right track. What’s mre, the firms that “slwed dwn t speed up” imprved their tp and bttm lines, averaging 40% higher sales and 52% higher perating incmes ver a three-year perid.
Hw did they disbey the laws f business physics, taking mre time than cmpetitrs yet perfrming better? They thught differently abut what “slwer” and “faster” mean. Firms smetimes fail t understand the difference between peratinal speed (mving quickly) and strategic speed (reducing the time it takes t deliver value). Simply increasing the speed f prductin, fr example, may be ne way t try t reduce the speed difference. But that ften leads t reduced value ver time, in the frm f lwer-quality prducts and services.
In ur study, higher-perfrming cmpanies with strategic speed always made changes when necessary. They became mre pen t ideas and discussin. They encuraged new ways f thinking. And they allwed time t lk back and learn. By cntrast, perfrmance suffered at firms that mved fast all the time, paid t much attentin t imprving efficiency, stuck t tested methds, didn’t develp team spirit amng their emplyees, and had little time thinking abut changes.
Strategic speed serves as a kind f leadership. Teams that regularly take time t get things right, rather than plugh ahead full bre, are mre successful in meeting their business gals. That kind f strategy must cme frm the tp.
8. Accrding t paragraph 1, what is the “speed gap” in business?
A. Delay between decisin and actin.
B. Speed difference in cmpanies f all sizes.
C. Speed gap acrss industries and cmpany types.
D. Gap between leaders intentins and actual speed.
9. What des the underlined part “the laws f business physics” in paragraph 3 refer t?
A. Fewer hurs, better results.B. Less prductin, mre value.
C. Mre time, better perfrmance.D. Slwer peratin, higher quality.
10. What can we learn abut successful cmpanies in the study?
A. They fcused n prductin speed.B. They cmpeted thrugh lw prices.
C. They avided making majr changes.D. They tk time t adjust when needed.
11. What culd be the best title fr the text?
A. Deliver Value? Plugh AheadB. Need Speed? Slw dwn
C. Imprve Quality? Serve BetterD. Reduce Time? Mve Faster
D
Accrding t the Wrld Health Organizatin, cardivascular (心脏的) disease is the leading cause f death glbally, yet it is estimated that mre than 75% f premature cardivascular disease is preventable. Atrial fibrillatin (心房颤动) and heart failure cntribute t abut 45% f all cardivascular disease deaths.
Despite significant advancements in cardivascular disease diagnstics, preventin, and treatment, abut half f the affected patients reprtedly die within five years f receiving a diagnsis fr a variety f reasns, including genetic and envirnmental factrs.
The researchers say the use f AI and machine learning can accelerate (加速) ur ability t identify genes that have imprtant implicatins fr cardivascular disease, which can lead t imprvements in diagnses and treatment.
The researchers analyzed healthy patients and patients diagnsed with cardivascular disease and used AI and machine-learning mdels t investigate the genes knwn t be assciated with the mst cmmn frms f cardivascular disease, including atrial fibrillatin and heart failure. They identified a grup f genes that were significantly assciated with having cardivascular disease.
They als fund significant differences amng race, gender, and age factrs based n the cardivascular disease. While age and gender factrs crrelated t heart failure, age and race factrs crrelated t atrial fibrillatin. Fr example, in the patients examined, the lder the patient, the mre likely they were t have a cardivascular disease.
“Timely understanding and precise treatment f cardivascular disease will ultimately benefit millins f individuals by reducing the high risk fr death and imprving the quality f life,” Ahmed says.
Future research shuld extend this apprach by analyzing the full set f genes in patients with cardivascular disease which may reveal imprtant bimarkers and risk factrs assciated with the cardivascular disease susceptibility.

A. Analysis f mre aspects f the patients’ genes.
B. Imprvement f AI and machine learning.
C. Use f the present research achievements.
D. Diagnsis f atrial fibrillatin and heart failure.
15. Which f the fllwing can be the mst suitable title?
A. Can Cardivascular Disease Be Timely Diagnsed?
B. Can AI Diagnse Cardivascular Disease Faster?
C. Can Cardivascular Disease Be Preventable?
