I was eleven the first time I saw Jane. The three f us kids came hme frm schl, and there she was, barely a year ld, wrapped in ur mther’s arms.
It wasn’t unusual t cme hme t strangers in the huse. Our parents hsted an emergency safe huse fr children taken in by scial services. The kids wuld stay with us anywhere frm a week t a few mnths. Usually, we were a shrt-term stp befre they returned t their bilgical parents r gt adpted.
Jane stayed with us fr tw and a half years. N ther child stayed that lng r develped such a strng emtinal bnd with us.
When a childless cuple adpted her, they prmised we wuld stay in her life. They wuld treat us like extended relatives, inviting us ver fr hlidays. We trusted them.
When she left, Jane screamed fr days. She wke in the night, crying fr my father. The adptive parents called us and said this was t hard. And it gt wrse every time we visited.
A few mnths int the adptin, we ate a tense dinner tgether. Jane cried thrugh the meal, then thrugh the gdbyes. And why shuldn’t she? Her family was walking ut f the frnt dr, getting int the car, and leaving withut her.
After that, the parents stpped answering ur calls. They turned cld and distant. Then, ne day, they sent us an email, saying that Jane needed a clean break. N mre visits. N reminders f her past life.
It culdn’t have been an easy decisin. These parents were trying t prtect her frm the pain and cnfusin f the change. But years f attachment dn’t just disappear, n matter hw ld yu are.
Lsing Jane frever changed the way I think abut family. It’s led me t believe that kinship (亲属关系) isn’t just abut claiming each ther, r ’belnging’ t each ther. It’s a web f bth visible and invisible care. It’s a tapestry (绣帷) made by peple wh lean in, lve, and let g.
The ld cliché(老话) says yu dn’t chse yur family. When flks use it, they’re usually talking abut bilgical kin. But when yu’re a child, it’s true whether r nt yu’re talking abut bld relatives.

Tw-thirds f all irrigated(灌溉的) agriculture in the wrld is likely t be affected in sme way by declining glaciers and dwindling snwfall in muntain regins, driven by the climate crisis, acerding t a UNESCO reprt.
Mre than 1 billin peple live in muntainus regins and, f thse in develping cuntries, up t half are already experiencing fd insecurity. That is likely t wrsen, as fd prductin in such regins is dependent n muntain waters, melting snw and glaciers(冰川), accrding t the Wrld Water Develpment Reprt 2025. Develped cuntries are als at risk: in the US, fr example, the Clrad River basin has been in drught since 2000, and higher temperatures mean mre water falls as rain instead f snw. Rain runs ff much faster than melting snw, making dry cnditins even wrse.
The largest three-year lss f glacier mass n recrd ccurred in the past three years, accrding t separate research frm the Wrld Meterlgical Organizatin, with Nrway and
Sweden amng the wrst-affected areas. Eastern Africa has lst 80% f its glaciers in places. Glaciers in the Alps, the wrst affected in Eurpe, have shrunk by abut 40% ver rughly the same perid.
The decline f glaciers has had a further impact, added Abu Amani, directr f water sciences at UNESCO. "Glaciers melting have an impact n the reflectivity f (slar) radiatin and that will impact the whle climate system," he warned. Mre avalanches(雪崩) will als ccur, as rain falling n snw is a majr factr behind avalanche frmatin. Pling water frm melting glaciers can als be released, causing sudden flds in valleys r t peple living further dwn the side f the muntain.
These impacts are cming at a time when many fd surces are already under pressure. Alvar Lari, president f the Internatinal Fund fr Agricultural Develpment and chair f UN-Water, called fr mre supprt fr peple wh live in affected muntain regins. "Water flws dwnhill, but fd insecurity rises uphill. Muntains prvide 60% f ur freshwater, but the cmmunities that safeguard these vital resurces are amng the mst fd insecure," he said.

The human interest with watching thers-whether thrugh reality TV r verheard drama -is ften dismissed as curisity. But new research suggests this urge may be a scial survival tl dating back millins f years.
T explre the rigins f scial curisity, Laura Lewis, a psychlgist at the University f Califrnia, and her clleagues studied hw human children between fur and six years ld frm San Francisc’s Bay Area and adult chimpanzees respnded t certain vides shwing members f their respective species. The results shw that bth grups preferred watching scial interactins ver scenes invlving individuals-even giving away small rewards t see the frmer.
"These findings demnstrate that scial infrmatin is imprtant, rewarding and valuable fr humans and ther primate(灵长类) species," Lewis says. "It suggests that scial infrmatin was als imprtant fr ur shared primate ancestrs and that fr millins f years it has been adaptive fr primates t gain scial infrmatin abut thse arund them."
Anther recent study explred peer-watching behavir in lng-tailed macaques(猕猴). Bth female and male macaques shwed mre interest in aggressive(好斗的) interactins than in peaceful brushing, and bth paid mre attentin t vides f familiar individuals. The study’s lead authr, Liesbeth Sterck, a primatlgist at Utrecht University, says the latter behavir mirrrs the way humans are drawn t the scial lives f peple they recgnize-whether family, friends r mvie stars. Interest in aggressive interactins, which are likely t reveal shifts in dminance r signal ptential threats, supprts findings that humans are especially aware f watching cnflict in media. "Keeping track f the pwer balance in yur wn grup likely has prime value fr primates, including humans," Sterck says.
Gillian Frrester, wh studies cmparative cgnitin(认知) at the University f Sussex, says scial attentin is key t maintaining a gd reputatin. In ancient humans and ther primates, reputatinal damage can bar access t fd and mates, cause physical cnflict and, in extreme cases, lead t ptentially deadly rejectin. With s much at risk, primates develped t keep a clse eye n grup members. "Mdern humans maintain this sharp attentin t ther peple’s scial interactins as an evlutinary adaptatin," Frrester says–s peple watching might just pay ff.
32. What did Laura Lewis and her team find in their study?
A. Children learned t becme mre scial by watching thers.
B. Chimpanzees shwed mre interest in watching individuals.
C. Children and Chimpanzees needed rewards t watch vides.
D. Children and Chimpanzees preferred watching scial scenes.
33. Why are macaques and humans interested in aggressive interactins?
A. T chase the latest scial trends.
B. T discver changes and threats.
C. T explre the scial lives f friends.
D. T demnstrate their pwer ver thers.
34. What des Gillian Frrester find abut reputatinal damage?
A. It affects human’s ability t find fd.
B. It is mainly caused by physical fights.
C. It can lead t serius results like being excluded.
D. It can be avided as primates value grup harmny.
35. What is the main idea f the passage?
A. Reality TV satisfies human curisity.
B. Scial curisity is develped in childhd.
C. Primates share similar behavirs with humans.
D. Peple-watching has deep evlutinary rigins.

I realized that I had been lking at it all the wrng way-evaluating myself n my abilities, nt n my ptential t grw int a wnderful persn. I had been s wrapped up in the academic side f things that I frgt t lk at the persn underneath.
Peple greet me cheerfully each mrning because they see my character. When I finally shifted my fcus frm what I lacked t wh I am-smene wh tries his hardest and cares deeply—everything changed. This inner shift was like a signal; by recgnizing my wn wrth, I began t carry myself with a quiet cnfidence that thers culd sense. They see a persn wh knws his wn value, nt because f achievements, but because f his character and effrt. In learning t value myself, I taught thers hw t see me. This year has nt just changed my envirnment; it has rebuilt my very fundatin, breathing new life int me.
