Tw years ag, a cuple f high-schl classmates wrked a mathematical wnder. It was a trignmetric (三角函数) prf f the Pythagrean therem (毕达哥拉斯定理). Nw, bth 19, they’ve just reprted finding 10 mre prfs f it. Fr ver 2,000 years, such prfs were cnsidered impssible. That, hwever, didn’t discurage Ne’Kiya Jacksn and Calcea Jhnsn. The tw teens published their new nes n Octber 28, 2023 in American Mathematical Mnthly.
“Peple have the impressin that yu have t be struggling fr years and years befre yu can actually prduce sme new mathematics,” says Lzan-Rbled, a mathematician frm the University f Cnnecticut. But Jacksn and Jhnsn shw that “yu can make a surprise even as a high-schl student.”
Mathematician Jasn Zimba annunced the first trignmetric-based prf f the Pythagrean therem in 2009. The secnd came six years later, frm mathematician Nun Luzia. These were the nly tw until 2022, when Jacksn and Jhnsn presented their first prfs. The teens first frmally presented their wrk at an American Mathematical Sciety meeting in March 2023. Afterward, they set ut t publish their findings in a peer-reviewed math jurnal.
“This prved t be the mst awesme task f all,” Jacksn and Jhnsn nted in their paper. They had t write up their wrk and learn new skills. But wrking n their early prf and studying Zimba’s “inspired the creative prcess,” Jacksn says. “Frm there we develped additinal prfs.” And, Jhnsn adds, “It was imprtant t have ur prfs published t shw that ur wrk is crrect and respectable.”
Publishing the prfs was a big achievement. But that desn’t mean the stry is ver. Nw “ther peple might take the paper and generalize thse prfs, r generalize their ideas, r use their ideas in ther ways,” Lzan-Rbled says. “It just pens up a lt f mathematical cnversatins.” Jacksn hpes that the prfs will inspire ther students t “see that barriers are part f the prcess. Stick with it, and yu might find yurself achieving mre than yu thught pssible.”

There is jy in giving but research frm the University f Bath shws that persnalisatin can transfrm a gift frm a mere bject int a mre meaningful experience that raises receivers’ self-wrth and makes them feel mre valued.
Persnalized gift giving generates “indirect pride” in receivers, a unique emtinal respnse. “Indirect pride als mirrrs the giver’s satisfactin frm putting thught and effrt int creating smething unique,” said Dr Diletta Acuti, a marketing expert at the University f Bath Schl f Management.
Researchers cnducted fur experimental studies. In the first study,74participants gifted clthes t a friend — sme persnalized. Gift appreciatin was assessed by asking receivers t change any items f the gift they did nt like. Receivers f persnalised gifts changed fewer clthing items, reflecting greater appreciatin. The secnd experiment invlving 134 participants shwed vides f T-shirt selectin prcesses, with custmized gifts rated as mre appreciated regardless f the time spent. The fllwing tw nline studies with mugs and wristwatches cnfirmed that persnalizatin increased bth gift appreciatin and receivers’ self-wrth.
“Persnalisatin can be a game-changer when chsing a gift. But it’s nt just abut selecting a custmizable ptin: yu als need t cmmunicate that effrt t yur receiver. Sharing why yu chse elements f the gift r the thught that went int it will make the receiver appreciate it even mre. Indeed, this additinal effrt helps them t cnnect with the pride yu felt in yur chices, making the gift even mre meaningful,” Dr Acuti said.
The study nted that persnalisatin als had implicatins fr sustainability, as receivers were mre like t take care f gifts that they valued mre. Brands culd benefit t by helping buyers t highlight their persnal tuch. Using “made by” signals can strengthen the emtinal cnnectin between the giver and the receiver.
8. Which belngs t “indirect pride”?
A. The receiver’s thrill f unwrapping gifts.
B. The giver’s pride in selecting ppular gifts.
C. The giver’s pleasure in picking a cstly item.
D. The receiver’s feeling f being truly appreciated.
9. Hw did the researchers cnduct the first study?
A. By cnducting nline surveys.B. By tracking item adjustments.
C. By using clthing gifts.D. By cllecting givers’ reactins.
10. What des the study imply abut persnalized gifts?
A. Explaining gift ideas increases value.
B. They reduce waste by being kept lnger.
C. They utperfrm regular gifts in all aspects.
D. Brand tls strengthen emtinal cnnectins.
11. Which is the best title fr this passage?
A. Are Persnalized Gifts Wrth the Effrt?
B. Why D Persnalized Gifts Mean Mre?
C. Persnalized Gifts: Cst and Wrth.
D. Persnalized Gifts: A Mdern Trend.

Taylr Swift fans really knw hw t “Shake It Off” — and shake the grund. Scientists studied hw the stadium and grund trembled during ne f Swift’s Eras Tur cncerts last August. They discvered that dancing fans generated shaking in the grund — earthquake waves that matched the beat f each sng. During Swift’s perfrmance f “Shake It Off”, the stands released abut as much energy as a magnitude 0.85 earthquake, which is nt quite strng enugh t be felt by humans.
This isn’t the first time scientists have measured quakes frm a stadium. In 2011, Seattle Seahawks fans shk their hme stadium with cheers after a stunning tuchdwn. And last July, Swifties rcked the grund at a Seattle cncert. The shaking frm thse events differs frm an earthquake. Earthquakes usually last nly a few secnds. A “cncert quake” can last several minutes. Besides, the grund als mves in different ways during quakes and cncerts. Earthquakes happen when big tectnic (地壳的) plates mve arund. Thse mtins perpetually change the grund. In cntrast, the shaking caused by crwds “is mre like splashing (泼水) in a pl,” explains Gabrielle Tepp, a prfessr at the Califrnia Institute f Technlgy in Pasadena. “Yu see the waves cming ut, but then nce yu’re dne splashing, it just ges back t nrmal.” The “cncert quake” desn’t usually defrm the Earth.
Tepp and her clleagues used similar instruments t detect earthquakes and cncert quakes. In the new study, they set up a prtable speaker next t a mtin sensr in their lab and turned the speaker vlume all the way up. They als played Swift’s “Lve Stry” at the speakers’ highest vlume. Tepp even jumped arund near the sensr while dancing t the last chrus. The sensr picked up the quaking which matched that frm the cncert nly when Tepp was jumping arund, which suggests that the shaking measured at the cncert came frm fans jumping and dancing, t.
The findings tell scientists abut mre than just cncert shaking. Understanding hw a stadium quakes in respnse t a large crwd culd help make buildings safer, says Gls. “We can als better understand human behavir using such seismic data”, she says. “I think there’s a lt f interesting infrmatin hidden in there.”
12. What is the functin f the first paragraph?
A. T intrduce the main argument.
B. T prvide backgrund infrmatin.
C. T ffer a cnvincing explanatin.
D. T cnclude the previus findings.
13. What des the underlined wrd “perpetually” mean in paragraph 2?
A. randmly.B. slightly.C. permanently.D. regularly.
14. Why did Tepp and her clleagues cnduct the experiment?
A. T test the effectiveness f the mtin sensr.
B. T figure ut the quake surce f the cncert.
C. T prve that Taylr Swift’s sngs can cause grund-shaking.
D. T study the relatinship between music vlume and grund-shaking.
15. What’s the significance f the research?
A. It guides fans t behave well at a cncert.
B. It predicts when and where an earthquake will happen.
C. It imprves stage design and sund effect f a cncert.
D. It lays a fundatin fr creating safer architecture.
