As a Spanish majr, I chse the IES Santiag prgram because it prvides pprtunities fr service-learning
prgrams. During my first few weeks in Santiag, I visited varius rganizatins t get an idea f what fields I
culd wrk in. On the brchure frm the Asciación Nacinal de Discapacitad Mental (ANDIME), a schl fr
children with Dwn syndrme (唐氏综合征), I nticed there was a music therapist (治疗师) n staff. Since my
ther majr is music, this seemed like an ideal pprtunity t get a taste f the prfessin.
At ANDIME, I was able t wrk with Ernest, a prfessinal music therapist, fr a few hurs twice a week. I
spent my hurs at ANDIME walking and clapping with the music, swaying and buncing with hula hps (呼啦圈),
beating n drums, singing sngs, cnducting cncerts, and lving a grup f extremely lvely kids.
By far my mst memrable mment at ANDIME happened during ne f my classes with Ernest. Mst f
the students had severe cases f Dwn syndrme, and several f them culdn’t speak and were nly minimally
respnsive. One such student, Miguelit, was even unable t sit still, make cntrlled mvements, r fix his eyes n
      anything.
On this particular day, Ernest brught ut a brand new instrument t use with the class. Ernest held the
instrument in frnt f Miguelit’s face. We watched excitedly as Miguelit’s eyes began t search fr its sund and
slwly fllw it up and dwn. A seemingly small event was a big step in the develpment f this little by.
Nw back in the U.S., I am unsure f my next step. Between lking fr jbs and picking ut which path t
pursue, I lve ging back t my phtgraphs and remembering the schl and my students. The pride shining in
their eyes was a reward in itself.

Many f us wake up cnstantly thrughut the night and a grwing number are simply t addicted t ur
smartphnes t put them dwn and g t bed. But what’s the wrst kind f sleep fr yur health?
Reprting in the jurnal Sleep, lead authr Patrick Finan, and his clleagues cnducted ne f the first studies
cmparing the tw types f sleep — interrupted sleep and shrt sleep — in a grup f 62 healthy men and
wmen wh were gd sleepers. The participants spent three days and nights in a sleep lab and answered questins
abut their md every evening befre ndding ff. A third were randmly assigned t be wken up several times a
night, anther third were nt allwed t g t sleep until later but weren’t wken up, and the final grup, which
acted as the cntrl, was allwed t sleep uninterrupted thrugh the night.
When Finan cmpared the three grups’ md ratings, he fund that the interrupted and shrt sleepers bth
shwed drps in psitive md after the first night. But n the next nights, the interrupted sleepers cntinued t
reprt declining psitive feelings while the shrt sleepers did nt — they stayed at abut the same level they had
reprted after the first night. When he lked at the brain patterns f the tw disrupted sleep grups, he fund that
thse wh wke up repeatedly shwed less slw wave sleep, r the deep sleep that is nrmally linked t feeling
restred and rested, than thse getting the same amunt f sleep but in a cntinuus sessin. “We saw a drp in
slw wave sleep s large and sudden, and it was assciated with a striking drp in psitive md that was
significantly different than in the ther grup,” he says.
As he ntes, “we shuld be paying attentin t nt just the quantity r quality f sleep, and nt simply the
quantity r quality f md r emtins, but the cmbinatin f the tw.”
      8. What was the main purpse f the final grup in the study?
      A. T prvide standard sleep data fr cmparisn.
      第 5页/共 13页
      B. T test the effect f sleep length n md changes.
      C. T measure the impact f md n sleep quality.
      D. T cmpare different methds f sleep interruptin.
      9. Which situatin best matches the study’s findings?
      A. A student stays up all night but feels fine after sleeping.
      B. A nurse with frequent night interruptins feels wrse ver time.
C A prgrammer sleeping 4 hurs undisturbed stays psitive.
      D. A parent wakes nce but can n lnger fall asleep.
      10. What des the underlined term “slw wave sleep” in paragraph 3 mst likely refer t?

      A. Hw Smartphne Use Befre Bed Threatens Peple
      B. Why Deep Sleep Matters Mre Than Sleep Duratin
      C. Why Interrupted Sleep Is Wrse Than Shrt Sleep
      D. Hw t Imprve Sleep Quality in a Busy Wrld

A new study links a particular gene t the ancient rigins f spken language, prpsing that a prtein variant
(蛋白质变体) fund nly in humans may have helped us cmmunicate in a nvel way.
“The genetic variant researchers were lking at was ne f a variety f genes that cntributed t the
emergence f Hm sapiens (智人) as the dminant species, which we are tday,” said Dr Rbert Darnell, an
authr f the study published n Tuesday in the jurnal Nature Cmmunicatins.
Darnell has been studying the prtein—called NOVA1 and knwn t be crucial t brain develpment—since
the early 1990s. Fr the latest research, scientists in his lab at New Yrk’s Rckefeller University used gene editing
t replace the NOVA1 prtein fund in mice with the exclusively human type t test the real-life effects f the
genetic variant. T their surprise, it changed the way the animals vcalized (发声) when they called ut t each
      ther.
This isn’t the first time that a gene has been linked t speech. In 2001, British scientists said they had
discvered the first gene tied t a language and speech disrder. Called FOXP2, it was referred t as the human
      第 6页/共 13页
language gene. Thugh FOXP2 is invlved in human language, it turned ut that the variant in mdern humans
wasn’t unique t us. Later research fund it was shared with Neanderthals, ur extinct cusins. “The NOVA1
variant in mdern humans, n the ther hand, is fund exclusively in ur species,” Darnell said.
The presence f a gene variant isn’t the nly reasn peple can speak. The ability als depends n things like
anatmical (解剖的) features in the human thrat and areas f the brain that wrk tgether t allw peple t speak
      and understand language.
Darnell hpes the recent wrk nt nly helps peple better understand their rigins but als eventually leads t
new ways t treat speech-related prblems.
      12. What des the new research find?
      A. NOVA1 may have given Neanderthals a real advantage.
      B. NOVA1 may have cntributed t the evlutin f speech.
      C. NOVA1 may have played a big rle in animal cmmunicatin.
      D. NOVA1 may have changed the develpment f brain functin.
      13. What happened t the mice after their genes were edited?
      A. They cmmunicated differently. B. Their speech ability was limited.
      C. They became mre aggressive. D. Their brain develpment stpped.
      14. What can be learned abut FOXP2?
      A. It is unique t Neanderthals. B. It has gne extinct.
      C. It may cause language prblems. D. It cmes frm mice.
      15. What des Darnell expect f the findings?
      A. Better understanding f ancient languages.
      B. New treatments fr language disrders.
      C. Discvery f mre genes linked t speech.
      D. Further research n brain develpment.

What is adulthd? Scieties all ver the wrld view the cncept f an adult as self-supprting and

As Alice Black pints ut, tday’s parents’ fear f letting kids d mre husewrk has added t their inability
t feel cmpetent and, thus, cnfident in themselves. Psychlgist Rbert Turner wrte abut this in his bk, The

But Turner’s ther cycles are just as imprtant. ____17____ If these life cycles are delayed, interrupted, r
denied, yu feel incapable f accessing yur states f self, cntrlling unpleasant feelings, and manipulating (操控)
the energy that puts tgether the fabric f yur inner wrld.
Turner wisely said that “ding well” psychlgically is being able t rll with the flw f emtins, manage
them, cmmunicate clearly and well with thers, and master varius skills. This requires an internal lcus (核心) f
cntrl, which implies self-cntrl f yur thughts, feelings, and actins. ____18____ Yu’re self-directed and nt
reliant n the wrld t tell yu wh yu are. And yu knw wh yu are within all this.
S, being an adult isn’t just hlding a jb. Being an adult is abut having a rted sense f self while being
capable f identifying and managing yur emtins and actins. ____19____ We are a scial species, s this is
      imprtant.
While raising an adult is a parent’s jb, it’s als ur respnsibility as a sciety t ensure that we supprt
schls that nurture (培养) emtinal and identity develpment. ____20____
      A. It’s als ur jb t supprt adults wh need help repairing incmplete life cycles.
      B. They talk abut smene’s inability t supprt themselves thrugh wrk.
      C. It’s being able t shw understanding when cmmunicating with thers.
      D. In ther wrds, yu’re playing the game f life — life isn’t playing yu.

      47. In June 2025, the air was still thick with the tensin f the just-cncluded Cllege Entrance Examinatin
(Gaka) when Dngshan High Schl drpped a bmbshell. A 10-meter-wide electrnic screen at the schl’s
main gate — usually used t display inspiratinal qutes —suddenly flashed a vivid red “Admissin
Achievement Reprt,” its wrds s bld they culd be seen frm acrss the street: “17 students admitted t
Tsinghua University and Peking University; 287 students t C9 League universities; 1295 students reaching the
admissin cutff fr 985-prject universities. ”
Within an hur, the gate was swarmed by parents f junir high schl students, all clutching leaflets the
schl had handed ut the week befre, which prmised “tp-tier cllege admissin rates thrugh strict
management.” Sme even called their children n the spt, urging them t “aim fr Dngshan next year.” But
inside Class 12, Grade 3 — the nly class still in sessin fr pst-exam paperwrk — there was n celebratin,
      nly quiet anger.
Lin Xia, wh had transferred t Dngshan frm a neighbring city last semester, stared at the screen thrugh
the classrm windw, his fingers crumpling a piece f paper in his pcket. It was a mem frm his hmerm
teacher, Mr. Li, written just tw weeks earlier: “Based n mck exam results, ur grade may have fewer than 500
students eligible fr 985 universities; Tsinghua/Peking University admissins remain uncertain. ” He leaned ver t
his deskmate, Zhang Lei, a third-year student at Dngshan, and whispered, “1295? That’s mre than duble the
number Mr. Li mentined. D they think we’re idits?”
Zhang Lei let ut a bitter laugh and pulled ut a tattered ntebk frm his schlbag, flipping t a page filled
with scribbled schedules: “Yu haven’t been here lng enugh. Last mnth, we had 10 straight days f classes —
5 days f cramming new cntent, 3 days f back-t-back exams (math in the mrning, Chinese in the afternn,
English in the evening), and 2 days f ging ver papers until 10 p. m. We nly get half a day ff n Sundays, and
even then, we’re assigned three sets f practice papers. My cusin ges t City N. 1 High Schl — same level
f incming students as us — but they get a day and a half ff every week, plus tw PE classes a week. And yu
knw what? Their average scre in the final mck exam was 15 pints higher than urs. All this ‘strict management’
is just wasting ur time with endless papers!”
As they spke, mre classmates jined in. Wang Jia, a quiet girl sitting in the frnt rw, raised her hand
hesitantly: “Last year, I heard the schl did the same thing — psted a fake admissin reprt befre results came
ut, then tk it dwn quietly when the real numbers were released. My lder brther was in Grade 12 then; he said
the schl threatened students nt t talk abut it. ”
      第 11页/共 13页
Just as the whispers grew luder, the classrm dr slammed pen. Mr. Wang, the grade directr — knwn
fr his strictness and frequent “surprise inspectins” — rushed in, his face ashen. He scanned the rm wildly, his
vice trembling: “Quick! Hide all yur ntebks, practice papers, and any ntes abut the schedule! The
Municipal Educatin Bureau inspectrs are here — they received a frmal cmplaint abut the fake admissin
reprt, and they’re asking t talk t students directly!”
Lin Xia and Zhang Lei frze. The cmplaint letter — they had stayed up until midnight last Sunday writing
it, listing the fake reprt rumrs, the grueling schedule, and the gap between the schl’s claims and actual results
      — had they really sent it t the right address? Befre they culd prcess it, the sund f ftsteps eched in the
hallway, grwing clser by the secnd.

      Paragraph1:
One f the inspectrs, a middle-aged man in a neat gray suit with a flder under his arm, walked straight t
Lin Xia’s desk, ignring Mr. Wang wh tried t blck him, and asked in a calm but firm vice, “Yung man, can
yu tell us the truth abut the schl’s daily schedule and whether the admissin reprt n the gate matches what
      yu knw?”
