The paper, published recently in Nature Cmmunicatins Psychlgy, details an nline learning game where participants were asked t click between tw planets fr rewards r t avid punishment. Researchers bserved three behaviural types: Sensitives (avid bad chices), Unawares (adjust strategies after being tld their errrs) and Cmpulsives (still make wrng chices even after learning their mistakes). “Sme peple dn’t learn frm experience. Even when mtivated t avid harm, they fail t see their behaviur causes prblems,” said Dr Bressel.
This study fllwed past research, which nly fcused n Australian psychlgy students, but had key differences: 267 participants frm 24 cuntries (including ver 50-year-lds), six-mnth fllw-ups, and pst-game surveys n their chices. The same behaviural prfiles emerged acrss cultures and ages. In Australian studies, 35% were Sensitives, 41% Unawares, 23% Cmpulsives; in the new study, 26% Sensitives, 47% Unawares, 27% Cmpulsives. Dr Bressel linked mre Cmpulsives t lder participants, as cgnitive (认知的) flexibility declines with age. Interestingly, when participants were invited back t play the same game six mnths later, mst shwed the same behaviural prfile. “That was striking,” said Bressel. “These aren’t just randm mistakes. They’re almst like persnality types. This is nt t say they’re fixed, just that they may require interventin t break.” Researchers cnfirmed Cmpulsives’ chices weren’t habits: participants culd explain their wrng chices. This pints t a deeper issue — a failure t integrate new knwledge t minimise bad utcmes.
Dr Bressel nted real life is mre cmplex than the game, but the pattern f ignring experience and infrmatin matches cmpulsry behaviurs. The research has imprtant implicatins fr public health messaging. Many campaigns rely n prviding infrmatin — abut smking, drinking r financial risks — with the assumptin that peple will act n it. But this study suggests that fr sme, infrmatin alne isn’t enugh. “Standard infrmatin campaigns wrk fr mst — but nt fr everyne,” Dr Bressel said. “Fr cmpulsive individuals, we may need different interventin.”
