When Clara Harlwe Bartn was 11 years ld, her lder brther was seriusly injured in a fall. Bartn spent tw years nursing him back t health until he fully gt well. Althugh she had this early nursing experience, Bartn wuld nt wrk as a nurse until later in life.
At the age f seventeen, Bartn wrked as a teacher in Massachusetts. Twelve years later, she pened the first free public schl in New Jersey. The schl grew frm nly six students n the first day f classes t mre than 200 students by the end f the schl year. When the schl pened in the fall f 1853, Bartn was surprised t learn that a man had been hired as the schl’s head teacher, being paid twice her salary t run the schl that she had set up and made successful. Outraged at this news, she quit her teaching psitin. “I may smetimes be willing t teach fr nthing, but if paid at all, I shall never d a man’s wrk fr less than a man’s pay,” she said.
