Harld Simmns never intended t becme a neighbrhd legend (传奇). At 73, he was just a retired wrker with t much time and an empty backyard. What started as a simple garden railrad prject quickly became smething extrardinary.
It began with a single circular track and an ld steam engine he’d rescued frm a sale. Each day, he wuld add tiny details — a tiny general stre, a little church and sme handcrafted trees. The neighbrhd children wuld smetimes lk ver the fence, their eyes wide with wnder.
One particularly curius 10-year-ld named Maya started visiting regularly after schl. Her wrking parents appreciated that Harld didn’t mind her watching him wrk. He’d explain each tiny detail. Wrd spread. Neighbrs wh had previusly just waved plitely stpped t admire Harld’s grwing landscape. Children brught their parents. Retired wrkers shared stries abut the real trains and twns the mdels represented.
When the lcal elementary schl heard abut Harld’s prject, they asked if he’d be willing t hst a field trip. Harld was surprised. Suddenly, classrms f children were learning histry, engineering, and creativity thrugh his tiny railrad.
Maya cnvinced her uncle t create a website shwing Harld’s railrad. It went ppular lcally and then reginally. Peple started sending him miniature (微型的) pieces like a tiny water twer frm Wiscnsin. Sn the railrad became a living histry museum, a classrm, and a gathering place.
On weekends, Harld wuld let children cntrl the trains, their small hands carefully managing the cntrllers and their faces lit with pure jy. Sme parents nticed their kids were learning patience, precisin, and strytelling thrugh this simple hbby.
By the time Harld turned 80, his backyard had becme a cmmunity landmark. Lcal schls included visits int their curriculum (课程). retirement hmes rganized grup trips. Artists and histrians turned t him. The tiny tracks became smething magical, shwing hw passin, creativity, and penness culd build cnnectins far bigger than anyne culd imagine.

Have yu ever fund yurself really wanting t change yet smehw remaining stuck in the same patterns? The answer might nt be in yur behavirs, but in yur beliefs — specifically, the beliefs yu have abut yurself and wh yu are. This is what psychlgists call self-cncept inertia (惰性).
Self-cncept inertia is the psychlgical resistance t changing ur identity. Our self-cncept is influenced by ur narrative identity, which is made up f the stries we tell abut urselves. These narratives can g beynd simply describing wh we are tday — they can restrict us frm being wh we believe we’re capable f becming in the future. This means that even if we want t change, as lng as we hld nt ur ld identities, we’ll unintentinally resist making the changes we knw we need t make t becme the “new” versin f urselves.
Our self-cncept desn’t yield easily, even t ur cnscius (有意识的) desires. When yur behavirs cntradict yur self-image, yu experience a state f psychlgical discmfrt. Fr example, if yu’ve always seen yurself as “nt a mrning persn”, successfully waking up at 5 a. m. creates tensin with yur established identity. S yur brain has tw ptins: Update yur self-cncept (hard) r abandn the new behavir (easier). As Carl Dweck discusses in her bk Mindset: The New Psychlgy f Success, peple with “fixed mindsets” tend t avid challenges that might cntradict their self-cncept.
Yet yur self-cncept is malleable by design. Ntice when yu use a phrase like “I’m just nt a ___8___ persn”. The abslute statement signals few changes will happen. Instead f “I’m nt an rganized persn” (identity), try “I haven’t develped strng rganizatinal systems yet” (behavir). Identity statements feel permanent, but behavir statements feel changeable. Identifying these habits als gives yu insight int a slutin yu can practice and imprve.
Self-cncept inertia weakens when we hld ur identities lightly. When we see urselves as wrks in prgress rather than finished prducts, we create the psychlgical space needed fr genuine transfrmatin. The questin isn’t whether yu can change — it’s whether yu’re willing t let g f familiar limitatins t discver what lies beynd them.
      8. Hw des ur narrative identity affect us?
      A. It defines ur better future.B. It changes ur self-cncept.
      C. It limits ur behaviur chices.D. It imprves ur previus selves.
      9. What des the example f waking up at 5 a.m. illustrate?
      A. The difficulty in getting rid f tensin.
      B. The benefits f becming an early riser.
      C. The cnflict between behaviur and self-identity.
      D. The imprtance f fllwing a strict daily rutine.
      10. What des the underlined wrd “malleable” in paragraph 4 mean?
      A. Predictable.B. Available.C. Sustainable.D. Adjustable.
      11. What des the authr advise peple t d?
      A. Make perfect prducts.B. Avid labelling yurself.
      C. Mnitr psychlgical changes.D. Attach imprtance t self-image.
      D
Bathing in the sun has been cnsidered a health hazard fr at least fur decades. It mainly cmes frm ultravilet (UV) light, which the Sun emits alngside visible radiatin. The risks UV pses are real, but a new research suggests it may be time t cnsider the benefits. Accrding t a study published recently in Health and Place, increased UV expsure appears t make peple significantly less likely t die f cardivascular (心血管) disease as well as cancer.
T cnduct their analysis, the researchers frm the University f Edinburgh used data frm ver 360,000 peple in the UK Bibank, a database. They identified tw grups mre likely t have high UV expsure: thse wh claimed t use sunbeds r sunlamps; and thse living in sunnier lcatins. T check that their assumptins abut the subjects’ UV expsure were crrect, the scientists als lked at vitamin D levels in a subset f bld samples. As vitamin D is synthesised in the skin in the presence f certain frms f UV radiatin, it is a reliable indicatr f slar expsure.
Their analysis shwed that sunbed-users were 23% less likely t die f cardivascular disease, and 14% less likely t die f cancer, than nn-users. Similar trends held depending n where peple lived. Sunbed-users, in ther wrds, lived an average f 48 days lnger than nn-users ver the 15 years during which they were studied.
The exact mechanism whereby UV light might lengthen lives is unknwn. The authrs believe part f the explanatin may lie in vitamin D’s cmpetence in bsting the immune system and imprving bne health. They als pint t nitric xide (NO,一氧化氮), a pwerful bld-vessel widener capable f reducing the risk f cardivascular disease. A prir research published in the Jurnal f Investigative Dermatlgy shwed that NO is released in skin cells that have mderate expsure t sme UV radiatin, and sunlight helps mve it int the circulatry systems. But fr nw, experts agree the study is nt a licence t stp wearing sun cream.
      12. Hw des the authr present the issue in the first paragraph?
      A. By giving examples.B. By defining a cncept.
      C. By prviding a lng-held pinin.D. By making cmparisn.
      13. What is emplyed t measure UV expsure?
      A. The lcatins f living.B. The length f sunbathing.
      C. The frequency f sunbathing.D. The level f vitamin D in bld.
      14. Which mechanism is a pssible way UV expsure lengthens life?
      A. Reducing bne density.B. Mving the circulatry system.
      C. Restricting the immune system.D. Releasing NO t widen bld vessels.
      15. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr this article?
      A. Sunbathing: Risking Our Skin.B. UV Expsure: Benefits r Nt?
      C. Sun Cream: A cure fr UV Expsure.D. Vitamin D: A Way t Lengthen Lifespan?
