A recent study frm the University f Califrnia San Dieg reveals that yung children between the ages f 3 and 5 can imprve their musical abilities, especially in understanding musical pitches (音高) , when learning Mandarin, cmpared t thse wh speak English.
This research challenges the idea that ur mental abilities are entirely separate frm each ther. It suggests that the skills children learn in ne area can influence their learning in anther. This raises questins abut hw ur mental abilities relate t each ther.
The study invlved tw experiments with similar grups f Mandarin and English learners, ttaling 180 children. They were tested n tasks related t pitch (high r lw ntes) and timbre (音色) (the quality f sund). Bth grups perfrmed similarly n the task related t timbre. Hwever, Mandarin speakers perfrmed better than English speakers n tasks related t pitch.
Mandarin is a tnal language, which means the tne (音调) used when saying a wrd can change its meaning, nt just add emphasis. Fr example, the Mandarin wrd “ma” can mean “mther,” “hrse,” “hem (麻),” r “scld,” depending n hw it’s spken. This fcus n pitch helps yung Mandarin speakers understand musical pitches better. Since bth language and music invlve changes in pitch, the study aimed t find ut if understanding pitch in language is different frm understanding it in music. The results suggest that experience with understanding musical pitches can als help in understanding language pitches, and vice versa(反之亦然).
While learning Mandarin might ffer an advantage due t its tnal nature, it’s imprtant t nte that the study desn’t suggest replacing music lessns with language lessns r the ther way arund. Learning anther language has many benefits, and music educatin remains imprtant fr musical skills.
In summary, this is an extremely valuable research, highlighting the cnnectins between cgnitive (认知的) skills and emphasizes the value f expsing children t different languages and prviding them with musical educatin fr their verall develpment.
What is the purpse f paragraph 1?
A. T ffer the research result t be discussed.
B. T intrduce the cncept f musical pitches.
C. T present the University f Califrnia San Dieg.
D. T share a fact abut children’s language develpment.
29. What is the challenged idea accrding t paragraph 2?
A. The benefits f musical educatin. B. The difficulty f learning Mandarin.
C. The separatin f children’s skills. D. The imprtance f speaking English.
30. What is the advantage f learning Mandarin accrding t the study?
A. Making music lessns n lnger needed.
B. Telling high and lw musical ntes apart better.
C. Telling the difference in sund quality mre easily.
D. Imprving children’s ability t learn ther languages.
31. What is the authr’s attitude twards this study?
A. Critical B. Supprtive C. Dubtful. D. Unclear

Imagine waking up ne mrning t find yur smartphne missing. Yu can n lnger get guided t wrk, rder yur cffee, r cnnect with friends. Fr mst f us, it is a nightmare (噩梦). But it shuld nt be exactly unable t be accepted.
Despite being mre digitally cnnected than ever, we are lnelier and mre anxius. Anxiety rates increased by 25% glbally. Depressin nw affects ver 280 millin peple wrldwide. All f this is due t ur grwing dependence n scial media and smart technlgies designed t ffer quick relief but ften at the expense f deep, meaningful engagement, which may further cause ur lss f smething easy t be ignred.
Thugh these cnveniences ffer shrt-term relief, they may weaken ur thinking skills. Fr example, GPS has undubtedly changed hw we travel. But a 2020 study fund that frequent GPS users struggle mre with self-guided navigatin (航行). Over time, thse wh depended mre n GPS shwed a sharp lss in spacial memry and prblem-slving skills. Hwever, reducing dependence n these cnveniences can lead t discmfrt. In seeking cmfrt tday, we might be trading away sme discmfrt.
That is the prblem: the very discmfrt we avid is ften what strengthens us. Viewing stress, a kind f discmfrt, as a challenge rather than a threat leads t better results. Research shws that mild stress can imprve adaptability. Neurscience (神经科学) shws that neurplasticity — the brain’s ability t frm new cnnectins — is imprved thrugh challenging experiences. This adaptability is imprtant fr develping resilience (抗逆力), a prcess fueled by bth mental challenges and active effrt.
But this desn’t mean we shuld reject cmfrt entirely; it’s t balance it with intentinal discmfrt. Think f it as “micr-dsing hardship” — a series f small, manageable difficulties that keep ur mental and emtinal muscles strng, such as writing with a pen, r washing dishes by hand. These small acts are enugh t reawaken the resilience we’ve buried under layers f ease. S, the next time yu feel the pull f ease, pause. Ask yurself: Is this mmentary cmfrt helping me grw r is it keeping me stuck? Chsing discmfrt isn’t easy, but smetimes, it’s wrth it.
32. What is the main cncern raised by the authr in the first tw paragraphs?
A.The high cst f replacing lst smartphnes.
B.The grwing ppularity f scial media wrldwide.
C.The failure f technlgy t prvide efficient services.
D.The rise in mental prblems linked t digital dependency.
33. What may digital cnveniences cause accrding t the text?
A. The meaningful engagement. B. The fast but wrthless relief.
C. The lack f necessary cmfrt. D. The decrease f thinking ability.
34. Which is a real-life applicatin f “micr-dsing hardship”?
A. Ordering take-ut fd after wrk. B. Taking the stairs instead f the lift.
C. Writing an email using vice-t-text. D. Explring a new city by using GPS.
35. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. GPS: the unseen cst f cnvenience.
B. Stress: the main cause f brain damage.
C. Smartphnes: blcks t human prgress.
D. Discmfrt: a hidden surce f resilience.
