Last year, in my late 40s, I began a master's prgram t study the science f behaviral change. This shift frm writer t student prved mre disrienting than I'd expected. It lifted me up, yet tested my pride.
While I enjyed my year-lng escape frm wrrying abut lsing relevance in the fictin wrld, I struggled inwardly. Certain prfessrs seemed mistrustful f a student at my age. Certain classmates fell silent in frnt f smene as ld as their parents. I'd frget myself, debating and discussing with yung faces, nly t catch sight f myself in the mirrr: an aging face. What am I ding here?
I' ve always admired thse wh bldly make a change. In my experience, they tended t be thse wh bravely switched t smething unfamiliar in midlife, whereas men with graying hair seemed stuck, as if change felt like failure.
I came t realize I wasn't s different. Like thse men, I had tied my dignity t my ccupatin. Technlgy keeps pushing aside what we tk as permanent, and hard-earned skills are irrelevant in a blink. Hlding n t wh yu were can feel suffcating(令人窒息的), but letting g is painful. Status is like clthing— superficial(肤浅的), but ne's dignity depends n it.
I suspect that many peple will struggle with this during the cming AI transfrmatin, which may replace jbs and remve entire ccupatins. But these changes als present us with an pprtunity: t get rid f the idea that we each must find a calling, then hld n t that identity r admit failure. Perhaps the dignified life invlves several versins f yu.
My student days are nw ver, fr the secnd time. When I last exchanged classrm fr jb market, I was 23, an ambitius writer hping t create smething n paper that might utlast me. But print isn't what it used t be. Nr am I.

Brwsing shrt vides can be a hit-and-miss affair, with jewels hidden amid rdinary effrts. But researchers have fund that switching t anther vide, r skipping frwards and backwards in the same ne, actually makes peple mre bred.
Dr Katy Tam at the University f Trnt Scarbrugh, the lead authr f the research, said bredm was clsely linked t attentin."We feel bred when there's a gap between hw engaged we are and hw engaged we want t be,"she said."When peple keep switching thrugh vides, they becme less engaged with the vides and they are lking fr smething mre interesting. This can lead t increased feelings f bredm."
The results appear t chime with ther studies: as previus research has suggested, while bredm relief is a driver fr peple t use scial media r smartphnes, the use f such technlgy appears t make the feeling wrse. Writing in the Jurnal f Experimental Psychlgy: General, Tam and clleagues reprt hw they carried ut seven experiments invlving a ttal f mre than 1,200 participants.
The first, invlving 140 participants, revealed that peple tended t switch between vides mre when they rated the cntent mre bring, while the secnd— an nline survey invlving 231 participants— suggested peple thught having the ptin t skip thrugh a vide r switch t anther wuld make viewing a vide less bring. Hwever, the team's subsequent experiments suggest this is nt the case.
Data frm a grup f 166 undergraduates suggests participants felt mre bred when allwed t skip abut within a vide than when they were nt able t. Meanwhile results frm 159 undergraduates revealed they reprted higher levels f bredm when given a cllectin f five-minute vides they culd switch between, cmpared with a single 10-minute vide.
“Our research shws that while peple fast-frward r skip vides t avid bredm, this behaviur can actually make them feel mre bred,” she said.“Just as we pay fr an immersive experience in a mvie theatre, enjyment ften cmes frm immersing urselves in vides rather than swiping thrugh them.”
28. What des the phrase“chime with” underlined in Paragraph 3 mst prbably mean?
A. agree with. B. Lead t. C. Cnflict with. D. Add dubts t.
29. In the experiments, Tam and her team _.
A. made an investigatin in a mvie theatre
B. cmpared participants f different age grups
C. identified situatins where peple feel mre bred
D. cllected and analyzed vides made by participants
30. What can we learn frm the passage?
A. Mre ptins can bring mre fun.
B. Attentin is the by-prduct f bredm.
C. Technlgy can help peple avid bredm.
D. The less we switch vides, the mre immersed we feel.

Much like beauty, art is in the eye f the behlder. The artwrk we are attracted t can give insight int ur persnality, such as whether we are t quick r t slw, calm r mdy. Studies int art preferences date back t the 1930s— mst f them examining the extent t which peple like r dislike different paintings. Research shws that a persn's interest in art is mre strngly related t certain persnality traits(特征) than t scial class, age, r gender.
In particular, a persnality trait called"penness"is the best predictr f whether individuals are interested in art. On the ther side, thse wh identify as"cnscientius(一丝不苟的)", are ften less drawn t the arts. These traits are part f the Big Five, a widely accepted persnality thery based n nearly a century f research. The mdel claims that each persnality is cmpsed f a cmbinatin f five cre traits: penness, cnscientiusness, extrversin, agree bleness and neurticism. Rather than stating a persn as being either shy r utging, the Big Five Mdel believes that everyne lies smewhere between the tw extremes.
Persnality traits may als affect the way peple visually scan art. A 2018 study tracked participants' eye mvements as they studied abstract artwrk. The majrity f participants cncentrated n the upper-right part. This makes sense, as the right half f the brain is specialized fr visual and spatial prcessing, and als plays a significant rle in prcessing the emtins that art draws ut. Hwever, participants wh tended tward emtinal instability fcused n the left side f the picture, and thse with mental disease paid mre attentin t the bttm f the picture.
Hwever, current research n persnality and art still has clear limitatins, reminding us that peple's preferences fr art are as cmplicated as art itself. But if yu' re lking fr a quick test f smene's general persnality traits, it desn't hurt t lk at what's hanging n their walls.
31. What is the strngest factr in determining a persn's interest in art?
A. Age and gender.B. Persnality characteristics.
C. Scial class.D. Educatinal backgrund.
32. What can we learn abut the Big Five Mdel?
A. It can explain why ur art taste changes.
B. It is well-supprted by artists wrldwide.
C. Everyne can fit int ne f the five types.
D. It is a universally-recgnized measuring mdel.
33. Accrding t the passage, a persn fcusing n the upper-right part f a painting is prbably ________.
A. mdyB. uncncernedC. perceptiveD. warlike
34. What is the best title f this passage?
A. Hw t discver yur art preference?
C. Hw t reveal ne's persnality traits?
D. What des yur taste in art say abut yu?

Recent research shwed nature can regulate ur sense f time. Fr many f us, the cmbined demands f wrk, hme and family mean that we are always feeling like we dn't have enugh time. 35 Permanent cnnectivity extends wrking hurs and can make it difficult t switch ff frm the demands f friends and family.
The research suggests that the slutin t ur lack f time may lie in the natural wrld. Psychlgist Ricard Crreia, at the University f Turku in Finland, fund that being in nature may change hw we experience time._ 36
Crreia examined studies which cmpared peple's experiences f time when they perfrmed different types f tasks in urban and natural envirnments._ 37_ Peple reprt a sense f expanded time when they were in nature cmpared t when they were in an urban envirnment.
Fr example, peple are mre likely t perceive a walk in the cuntryside as lnger than a walk f the same length in the city. Similarly, peple reprt perceiving time as passing mre slwly while perfrming tasks in natural green envirnments than in urban envirnments._ 38
It's nt just ur sense f time in the mment which appears t be changed by the natural wrld, it's als ur sense f the past and future. Previus research shws that spending time in nature helps t shift ur fcus frm the immediate mment twards ur future needs._ 39
This can help us t priritize ur actins s that we meet ur lng-term gals rather than living in a cntinuus state f"just abut keeping ur head abve water". This is in part because spending time in nature appears t make us less impulsive, enabling us t delay instant satisfactin in favur f lng-term rewards.
A. He believed that stress can break ur sense f time.
B. Nature seems t slw and expand ur sense f time.
C. These studies cnsistently shwed the same cnclusin.
D. He added that it even gives us the sense f time richness.
E. Time shrtage has als been wrsened by digital technlgies.
F. Spending time in nature is knwn t have many benefits fr wellbeing.
G. Rather than fcusing n the demands f time, nature helps us t see the bigger picture.

Over breakfast this mrning, I enjyed a shrt chat with Mia, my new Spanish study buddy. I explained what I had learned abut the psychlgy f happiness frm a Spanish-language pdcast. By the end f the ten-minute cnversatin, I felt that I had mastered mre f the language than if I'd dne an hur f textbk exercises.
Mia, hwever, des nt exist in real life. It is an AI that I created t take advantage f a phenmenn called the"prtege effect(学徒效应)."Accrding t research, we learn mre effectively when we teach smene else abut
the tpic we' ve just explred— even if that persn desn't really exist. The effect has its rts in the principle f“learning by teaching,” pineered in the early 1980s by Jean-Pl Martin, a French teacher wrking in Germany. T imprve his students' language learning, he had them research and present different parts f the curriculum t their classmates. The technique bsted their mtivatin, self-cnfidence, and cmmunicative abilities, and it sn spread t many ther schls.
Later, a grup f Stanfrd scientists tested the idea. In a pineering experiment, Catherine Chase asked 62 eighth-graders t use a cmputer prgram t study hw fever affects the bdy. Over tw lessns, the students had t read a text and then create a flwchart. Half the teens did the exercise as a frm f self-study, while the thers were tld that their diagram wuld help t teach a virtual character. At the end, thse in the teaching rle had learned cnsiderably mre f the material, with much strnger perfrmance n tests.
Chase named this the prtege effect, and it has since been replicated (复制) many times. These later studies suggest that learning by teaching is mre pwerful than ther memry techniques. When we feel a sense f respnsibility t prvide the right infrmatin, we will make a greater effrt t deepen ur understanding. This prcess then helps t enhance what we have learned.
40. What is prtege effect?
41. Why was Martin's technique spread t many schls?
Please decide which part is false in the fllwing statement, then underline it and explain why.
42. Accrding t the prtege effect, the methd f self study helps us perfrm better n tests.
43. Hw can yu put the“prtege effect” int practice in yur daily life?(In abut 40 wrds)
