David watched the teacher surrunded by laughing yung students. N ne had ever used the schlyard itself fr a classrm. “What next?” he thught. Sn he didn’t have time t think abut the yunger bys, fr he was running after butterflies and dragnflies himself.
David and his friends liked this new way f learning.
“It will be a clear night tnight. G utside and lk at the sky,” said the schlmaster. “Lk at the stars ad ntice their brightness and the patterns they make. These patterns have names frm Greek mythlgy (神话), names like Orin, Aries, and thers. Tmrrw we will learn abut the ancient stries n them.”
“Hw is the new schlmaster?” asked David’s father that evening, when David annunced he was ging ut t lk at the sky.
“He’s different frm any schlmaster we’ve had,” David admitted. “He seems interested in everything arund him, and he wants us t be curius t. He even used the schlyard as a classrm.”
“S Mr. Jhn Adams and his new ways make schl useful t yu after all,” jked David’s father.

My brther nce said, “I’d lve fr us all t live tgether, but it’s just nt practical.” This reflects a Western way f thinking that values independence ver living with family. Hwever, as husing csts rise and families face elder care challenges, this way f thinking is changing. Living with several generatins — cmmn in places like China — is becming ppular in the UK.
Recent reprts shwed that 1.8 millin UK husehlds nw include tw r mre adult generatins. Census (人口普查) data shwed that 71 percent f Britns wuld cnsider it in the future. Mney is a big reasn: The cst-f-living crisis makes sharing rent, utilities (水电费) and grceries practical. Fr aging parents, aviding expensive care facilities lwers financial pressure. Hwever, fcusing nly n mney misses the deeper benefits.
Living tgether isn’t just abut sharing bills; it’s abut sharing lives. It creates supprt systems: Grandparents lk after children, adults help with chres and teens learn patience and care frm elders. In a sciety facing lneliness, especially amng senirs, being clse allws daily cntact that phne calls can’t replace. My brther’s wish fr a “big huse” wasn’t nly ld memries — it shwed that separated families ften miss these mments.
Of curse, there are challenges. Privacy cncerns, different rutines and small spaces require give-and-take (互相谦让). But mdern design, frm granny flats t shared cmmn areas, can help. The key is t set bundaries while respecting each ther.
Sme peple say living with several generatins feels like ging backward. I see it as prgress: using traditin t slve mdern prblems. China’s mdel wrked nt because f duty, but because it understd that family members need each ther. As we rethink aging, childcare and husing csts in the West, cmbining husehlds ffers mre than just saving mney — it can bring back the sense f cmmunity we’ve lst.
Living with several generatins isn’t fr everyne, but calling it “impractical” ignres its ptential. It is a caring respnse t tday’s pressures, ne that turns “my burden (负担)” int “ur shared life”. Let’s stp seeing it as a sacrifice and start valuing it as a chice wrth cnsidering.
8. What des the authr suggest abut the Western view f family life?
A. It prefers wealth t relatinships.
B. It sees independence as imprtant.
C. It values privacy mre than supprt.
D. It ignres traditin in mdern times.
9. What deeper rle f multi-generatinal living des the authr highlight?
A. It strengthens family cnnectins.
B. It encurages respect fr traditins.
C. It prepares children fr adulthd.
D. It reduces dependence n sciety.
10. Why des the authr mentin China’s mdel f living?
A. T criticize Western values.
B. T prvide a cultural difference.
C. T shw a successful example.
D. T defend traditinal duties.
11. What des the authr cnsider multi-generatinal living?
A. It is mdern yet imperfect.
B. It is practical yet a shrt-term fix.
C. It is utdated but unavidable.
D. It is challenging but helpful.

What did yu have fr breakfast tday? And hw did yu celebrate yur last birthday? When yu think back t these events, yu’re using episdic memry (情景记忆) — the ability t recall persnal experiences tied t specific times and places. But hw des yur brain keep these memries separate withut mixing them up?
Scientists at the University f Califrnia, Ls Angeles, in the US believe this is thanks t a “memry reset buttn” in ur brainstem (脑干). This small regin, called the lcus ceruleus (蓝斑核) , helps rganize and separate ur memries.
In the study, 36 vlunteers tk part in a memry task. Lying in an MRI scanner (核磁共振扫描仪), they were shwn a series f pictures f different bjects. Meanwhile, several simple tnes were played ver and ver again, first in ne ear and then in the ther with a different pitch (音调). The pitch change aimed t change the cntext (情境) and create an event bundary.
Accrding t a previus study by Kansas State University in the US, event bundaries help the brain rganize episdic memry by changing ur perceptin (感知) and attentin. Ever walked int a rm and suddenly frgt why? That’s an event bundary — entering r exiting a rm — at wrk.
After the experiment, scientists tested hw well the vlunteers culd recall the rder f the pictures. The result shwed that it was harder t d when the series f pictures crssed an event bundary. This suggests that changes in sund made the brain stre memries separately. What’s mre, MRI scans shwed that the lcus ceruleus became highly active when event bundaries appeared, but nt s much therwise.
Earlier research shwed that the hippcampus (海马体), anther brain regin, helps shape episdic memry by bth linking events clse tgether in time and separating thse further apart. But what tells the hippcampus when t change mdes? MRI scans suggest that “the lcus ceruleus may prvide the critical ‘start’ signal t the hippcampus, as if saying, ‘Hey, we’re in a new event nw’,” said Lila Davachi, ne f the researchers.
The new understanding culd lead t better treatments fr memry-related prblems like Alzheimer’s disease, where the lcus ceruleus is veractive. These cnditins might be managed by calming the lcus ceruleus thrugh medicatin, slw breathing r even using stress balls.
12. Hw des the authr intrduce the research in the beginning?
A. By sharing experiences.B. By raising questins.
C. By imagining scenes.D. By explaining a thery.
13. What was the purpse f playing tnes with different pitches in the experiment?
A. T create real-life situatins.B. T test vlunteers’ hearing ability.
C T mark a shift t a new cntext.D. T increase the difficulty f the task.
14. What did the MRI scans reveal abut the lcus ceruleus during the experiment?
A. It shwed higher activity at event bundaries.
B. It sent signals t the hippcampus regularly.
C. It cntrlled vlunteers’ memry recall rder.
D. It helped link pictures t specific sunds.
15. What is the last paragraph mainly abut?
A. The difficulty f treating memry-related disease.
B. The ptential applicatins f the research findings.
C. The drawbacks f the small-scale experiment.
D. The future research directins fr memry.
