“This picture shws ne way each persn can help ur team,” Kellan began explaining. “Fr example, Rry has fast speed, and Jasn has sharp eyes fr watching the ball.” Kellan nticed hw everyne in the grup slwly changed, sitting up taller and smiling as she mentined their names and skills.
“What will happen if ne lp is missing?” asked Kellan.

D Bys and Girls Have Different Reading Habits?
The Prgram fr Internatinal Student Assessment (PISA) is a wrldwide study f 15-year-ld students’ perfrmance in math, science, and reading. A clser lk at the reading tests shws the interesting fact—girls are utperfrming bys in reading and this is cnnected with girls’ greater enjyment f reading.
One key area which has a main effect n reading perfrmance is reading fr enjyment rather than simply fr study r schlwrk purpses. Interestingly, the PISA study fund that in all cuntries except Suth Krea assessed (评估) girls read fr enjyment mre than bys. The study fund that in all the cuntries assessed, just ver half f bys, but almst three-quarters f girls said that they read fr enjyment.
In cuntries such as Estnia, Lithuania and the Netherlands, the difference between bys and girls was mst significant (显著的). What’s mre, in places such as Austria, very lw levels f bys expressed interest in reading.
Hwever, in places like Japan, bys and girls read fr enjyment at almst the same level. And there were a few cuntries and places that scred very highly in bys reading enjyment, fr example, in Albania, Indnesia, Shanghai in China and Thailand where at least 80% f bys enjy reading. Althugh these psitive numbers are matched and passed by girls wh reprted an even higher level f reading enjyment (90%).
An interesting area which the PISA study lked at was the types f literature (文学作品) that bth girls and bys generally enjy. Bys were fund t enjy reading magazines, newspapers, and cmic bks mre than girls. Girls were fund t be twice as likely t enjy wrks f fictin (小说) as bys. This was clearly repeated acrss all cuntries.
While reading in all frms is certainly beneficial and shuld be supprted, the lw number f bys reading fr enjyment and their limited chices are prblems that need t be slved. Cuntries need t think abut ways t inspire interest fr bys in reading and make sure that a wide variety f different types f bks are available fr them.
The PISA study has shwn a clear result in genders (性别) when it cmes t reading. Lw levels f interest in r enjyment f reading can have lng term effects n future success in life. Fr this reasn, it is imprtant that gvernments, teachers and parents all wrk t help raise reading levels.
35. Accrding t the passage, PISA study fund ________.
A. bys enjyed reading wrks f fictin twice as much as girls
B. girls in mst cuntries read fr enjyment mre than bys
C. bys liked t read fr study r schlwrk purpses
D. girls were better in math and science tests than bys
36. What d yu knw frm the passage?
A. Mst bys in Shanghai in China enjy reading.
B. Bys in Thailand enjy reading mre than girls.
C. Mre bys read fr enjyment than girls in Japan.
D. Few girls enjy reading magazines and newspapers.
37. The writer prbably agrees that ________.
A. students shuld be suggested reading their favrite bks
B. students’ future success in life depends n their reading ways
C. actins shuld be taken t encurage bys’ interest in reading
D. reading fr schlwrk has a main effect n reading perfrmance
D
In parts f Africa, peple cmmunicate with a wild bird—the greater hneyguide—in rder t lcate bee nests and harvest their stres f hney. It’s a rare example f cperatin (合作) between humans and wild animals. Brian Wd and Claire Spttiswde were lead authrs n a study abut hw this valuable partnership is maintained and hw it changes in different cultures.
“Our study prves the bird’s ability t learn specific viced signals that are traditinally used by different hney-hunting cmmunities. This helps peple and birds wrk tgether in ways that are beneficial fr bth,” Wd said. “Hneyguides seem t knw the landscape well. They knw the lcatin f bee nests and then share with peple,” Spttiswde said. “Peple are eager fr the bird’s help.” The hneyguides als benefit frm lcating the nests: They eat the leftver hney.
Spttiswde and Wd’s study was dne with the Hadza cmmunity in Tanzania and the Ya cmmunity f nrthern Mzambique. Befre this study, they had already fund that the tw grups use different ways t attract hneyguides. When a Hadza persn wants t wrk with a hneyguide, they make a whistle (口哨) sund in Mzambique, Ya peple d this by making a “Brr!...” sund first, then a “…Hmm!” sund.
Using mathematical mdels and audi (音频) playback experiments, the team studied these signals. In the experiment, researchers played the same set f recrded sunds t hneyguides in Tanzania and Mzambique. Thrugh this experiment, the researchers wanted t knw whether the hneyguides culd recgnize and prefer the special sunds used by lcal hney-hunters, r the birds were just naturally attracted t all such sunds.
The hneyguides in Tanzania were ver three times mre likely t cperate when hearing the calls f lcal Hadza peple than the calls f “freign” Ya. The hneyguides in Mzambique were almst twice as likely t cperate when hearing the lcal Ya call, cmpared t the “freign” Hadza whistles.
The study shws that differences in hneyguide-attracting signals are nt randm (随机的) but have a practical reasn. While hney-hunting, bth the Hadza and Ya cme acrss mammals (哺乳动物), but nly the Hadza hunt them, using bws and arrws. The Hadza’s hunting might explain the less nticeable whistles they use. Hadza hunters explain that they can avid being fund by their prey (猎物) because their whistles “sund like birds.” Hwever, the signal the Ya use t cmmunicate with the hneyguide can help scare ff animals they find dangerus.
38. By cperating with hney-hunting cmmunities, hneyguides can ________.
A recgnize hunters’ whistleB. lcate bee nests easier
C. have mre fdD. becme familiar with the landscape
39. Why did the researchers use the same recrded sunds?
A. T study their mathematical mdels.
B. T check if they are a natural preference.
C T see if they increase birds’ ability t find hney.
D. T teach hney-hunting cmmunities hw t give signals.
40. What can we learn frm Spttiswde and Wd’s study?
A. The hneyguides prefer calls frm the lcal peple.
B. The human-bird relatinship can change with new signals.
C. The Ya cmmunity hunts animals while lking fr bee nests.
D. The signals frm the Hadza were mre attractive t hneyguides.
41. What is the last paragraph mainly abut?
A. Hw mammals react t different signals.
B. Hw signals cnnect with hunting activity.
C. Hw hunting skills are used t scare ff animals.
D. Hw whistles help hneyguides t find bee nests.

Strength training, a type f exercise, is used t build strength, pwer, and endurance (耐力). Many adults d strength training, but is it safe and useful fr children? Peple used t think that strength training was nt useful and even dangerus fr children, pssibly causing injuries that culd affect their grwth. Hwever, the latest study shws that strength training des imprve children’s verall health.

The strength training can mst likely make them better, faster and strnger. “It is s beneficial fr their bdies, like their bnes, jints and metablic (新陈代谢的) health,” says Becca Rigg, a prfessinal trainer at a fitness center. She knws all abut the psitive effects f strength training. She takes her kids t strength wrkuts tw t three times per week.
“I als lve the message teenagers receive when exercising this way: They may feel mre cnfident when they finish such hard and tiring training. It is als rewarding fr them t see results. They are, indeed, getting strnger while having a better image,” explains Rigg, “Smetimes they make strength training part f their life and it’s easier fr them t get invlved in the training later.”
Hw d kids get started? Just like ther activities, it is very imprtant t learn the crrect way t d it. Fr strength training, it is a must t learn frm an experienced cach because the cach can make sure children d mvements safely and crrectly. In the early stage, it is best fr teens t simply use their bdy weight, such as ding push-ups and squats.
