Mre than a third f fd grwn in the US ges uneaten, and that percentage has increased in the past five years. Much f that fd ends up in landfills, where it breaks dwn, creating a gas that cntributes t glbal warming. A cmpany based in Denmark has spent the past eight years wrking t bring that percentage dwn by helping restaurants sell fd cheaply.
T Gd T G, an app starting in Denmark and with participating stres in 17 cuntries tday, wrks with businesses t sell their end-f-day leftvers fr 60%-80% ff. By matching hungry, cst-cnscius custmers with surplus fd, the app’s creatrs say they reduce waste, ne bag f saved fd at a time.
MacAulay, the app’s US cuntry manager, says the cheaper price tag and the recvered business csts are great side effects, but the main pint is really arund reducing fd waste. “When smene buys a ‘surprise bag’, the app adds that purchase (购买) t his/her lifetime climate impact recrd. It displays all the electricity and the carbn emissins (排放) prevented frm ging t waste.”
“We’ve saved ver 250 millin meals,” MacAulay says. “S if yu think abut the scale, it is having an impact.” Accrding t the app’s estimate, that translates t taking abut 135,000 cars ff the rad fr a year, because apart frm the glbal warming gas released by the rtten fd in landfills, the climate impact als includes the land and water used t grw that fd and the gas used t pwer the trucks and factries that prepare and transprt fd.
“That’s a huge amunt, especially cnsidering that in the US all fd lss and waste accunts fr abut 6% f the ttal greenhuse gas emissins ftprint,” says Alexandria Cari with the fd waste nnprfit ReFED. “Marked-dwn alert apps like T Gd T G are especially ppular amng businesses that prduce baked gds, s there’s n shrtage f pastries and pizzas available. I think in the areas where they are trying t expand int retail grcery, even int manufacturing, there’s still a little bit t be figured ut there.”
      8. Hw des the app functin?
      A. By cllecting wasted fd arund.
      B. By buying fd directly frm lcal suppliers.
      C. By selling leftvers cheaply t buyers in need.
      D. By matching factries with the remaining fd.
      9. What will the app recrd after a “surprise bag” is sld?
      A. The updated infrmatin f “surprise bags”.
      B. The buyer’s effrt t reduce climate impacts.
      C. The carbn emissins caused by this purchase.
      D. The amunt f electricity used in this purchase.
      10. What des the authr mainly intend t shw in paragraph 4?
      A. The wide use f the app.B. The effect brught by the app.
      C. The harm caused by fd waste.D. The impact f cars n the climate.
      11. What might the app fcus n fr its future develpment accrding t Cari?
      A. Cperatin with mre bakeries.B. Setting up a fd waste nnprfit.
      C. Expanding business t ther areas.D. Giving ut mre “surprise bags”.
      D
Human beings have a cnflicting relatinship with the sun. Peple lve sunshine; hwever, if yu stay ut t lng r haven’t taken enugh preventin, yur skin will let yu knw the angry sunburn. First the heat, then the pain, then the regret. Were peple always crazy abut sunscreens? The answer is “n”.
With nly their feet t carry them, ur distant ancestrs didn’t mve arund much during their lives. Their skin adapted t subtle, seasnal changes in sunlight and UV cnditins by prducing mre eumelanin (真黑素) and becming darker in the summer and then lsing sme pigment (色素) in the fall and winter when the sun wasn’t s strng. This is nt t say that the skin wuld have been undamaged by tday’s standards. We can infer frm the effects f sun expsure (暴露) n mdern peple that the damage was similar.
As time ges by, peple’s way f living changes as well. Abut 10,000 years ag, human beings made their living by gathering fds, hunting and fishing. By arund 6,000 BC, many peple were spending mre time in walled settlements, and mre time indrs. By at least 3,000 BC, a whle industry f sun prtectin grew up t create equipment f all srts — hats, tents and clthing — that wuld prtect peple frm the discmfrt and unavidable darkening f the skin related t lengthy sun expsure. In sme places, peple even develped prtective pastes — early versins f mdern sunscreens — t prtect their expsed skin.
As peple have mved arund mre and faster ver lnger distances in recent centuries, and spend mre time indrs, their skin hasn’t caught up with their lcatins and lifestyle. Yur levels f eumelanin prbably aren’t perfectly adapted t the sun cnditins where yu live, s they aren’t able t prtect yu the same way they might have prtected yur ancient ancestrs.
Peple may lve the sun, but we’re nt ur ancestrs. Humanity’s relatinship with the sun has changed, and this means changing yur behavir t save yur skin.
      12. What can be inferred frm the text?
      A. Ancestrs’ skin suffered mre sunburn.
      B. Mving arund helps increase eumelanin.
      C. Eumelanin can help prtect against sunburn.
      D. The lss f pigment means n skin damage.
      13. Hw is paragraph 3 mainly develped?
      A. In spatial rder.B. In time rder.
      C. By listing figures.D. By giving examples.
      14. What factrs cntribute t the decline f peple’s adaptability t the sun?
      A. Changes f their lifestyle and lcatins.
      B. The level f eumelanin and temperature.
      C. UV cnditins and the amunt f sunlight.
      D. Prtectin equipment and lnger sun expsure.
      15. What will mst prbably be talked abut next?
      A. Sme tips fr prtecting the skin.
      B. Risks f lasting expsure t the sun.
      C. Benefits f adapting t the envirnment.
      D. Examples f hw sunlight affects the skin.
