When Dr. Daniel Olaiya isn’t presenting Operatin Ouch! n CBBC, he is wrking as a Natinal Health Service dctr, specializing in anesthesilgy (麻醉学). He is als a flight dctr, which means he wrks n air ambulances.
Olaiya’s interest in science didn’t start with schl lessns. Instead, it grew frm his lve f science fictin. He was a big fan f superheres, in particular the X-Men cmics. His favurite character was Havk, wh can release pwerful energy, which Olaiya thught was really cl. Anther her that he admired was the film character Indiana Jnes, an adventurus archaelgist and prfessr at a university. He used t dream f becming “Indiana Jnes” in his wn way.
Becming a dctr wasn’t always Olaiya’s dream, but by the end f secndary schl, he viewed it as a career where he wuld deal with peple, g n adventures and use his scientific knwledge, which was bth enjyable and challenging. Pre-medical studies were really difficult because there was a lt t study. He struggled with it, but when he started his degree at the University f Exeter, he says, “That was when the fun began.” He lved utdr adventures and activities while he was studying there.
In 2016, Olaiya jined FameLab, a glbal science cmmunicatin cmpetitin, t share scientific ideas with audience. He delivered a creative three-minute talk n the science f happiness. The next year, he participated again, despite arriving an hur late due t heavy traffic. The talk ended up being a success and Olaiya made it thrugh t FameLab’s natinal final.
Science cmmunicatin is still an imprtant part f Olaiya’s jb — he is nw ne f the presenters n Operatin Ouch! n CBBC. His mst imprtant advice fr any yung dctr is t wrk really hard at schl and “dive as deep as yu can int the science and the human aspect, because yu can’t have ne withut the ther in medicine.”

Nearly a third f the Earth’s land area is cvered by frests and they play an essential rle in sustaining life n the planet. Hme t mre than 80% f the wrld’s land-based species, frests als prtect ur planet by slwing dwn climate change — but scientists aren’t sure by hw much. Recently, a new space missin has been carried ut t find ut hw much carbn is stred by Earth’s trees and hw this is changing as frests are cut dwn.
Trees absrb carbn dixide frm the air and stre it in their trunks, rts and leaves. Carbn dixide is a greenhuse gas that traps the sun’s heat in the Earth’s atmsphere, pushing up temperatures. Exactly hw much carbn is taken ut f the air is very hard t measure — but nw, researchers believe that space-based bservatins culd prvide a slutin t precisely measure these carbn stcks (储量) n a glbal scale.
The missin invlves a space prbe (探测器), which is a device withut a pilt, called Bimass. The prbe carried a radar — a piece f equipment that can scan thrugh the tp f the frest dwn t the flr. This state-f-the-art radar had never been sent t space befre, but its design means it even can measure the trunks, branches and stems f trees in the wrld’s thickest and mst remte rainfrests.
The scans it makes will then be used t create detailed 3D maps f areas in Africa, Asia and Suth America. Prfessr Shaun Quegan frm the University f Sheffield in England, the lead scientist, explained that the scans wuld allw researchers t weigh the carbn cntent f the wrld’s trpical frests frm space and, crucially, wrk ut hw much these are changing ver time.
Bimass was launched frm French Guiana in Suth America. It is expected t fly 414 miles up and rbit the Earth fr the next five years. The data gathered by the Bimass missin will cntribute psitively t glbal frest health.
      8. Why is the frests’ rle mentined in the first paragraph?
      A. T appeal t peple t prtect rainfrests.
      B. T cmpare frests with ther ecsystems.
      C. T list the cnvenience prvided by frests.
      D. T shw the mtivatin fr the Bimass missin.
      9. What is the Bimass space missin intended fr?
      A. Detecting frests’ carbn stcks.B. mapping all cntinents n Earth.
      C. Studying the greenhuse effect.D. Explring new rainfrest species.
      10. What can we knw abut the Bimass prbe?
      A. It requires a pilt t perate.B. It can identify the number f trees.
      C. It is fitted with advanced equipment.D. It can reach every crner f the wrld.
      11. Which can be the best title fr the text?
      A. Glbal Frest Health Imprved by Space Data
      B. New Radar Technlgy t Explre Frest Climate
      C. The trpical Rainfrests: The Defender f Earth’s Life
      D. The Bimass Space Device: A New Eye n Frest Carbn

Exercising has many health benefits. Sn, it culd help lwer yur electricity bill! Instead f spending hurs charging yur wearable devices, scientists frm the United Kingdm have develped a nan device that generates electricity frm running energy.
The flexible nangeneratr (纳米发电机), which turns sme mechanical energy int electricity, culd becme as useful in creating clean energy as slar cells. A study published in Nan Energy shwed it prduces 1,000 milliwatts f pwer — a 140-fld increase ver traditinal 10-milliwatt nangeneratrs.
“What’s really exciting is that ur little device with high energy harvesting efficiency culd ne day rival the pwer f slar panels and culd be used t run anything frm self-pwered sensrs t smart hme systems that run withut ever needing a battery change,” explains Md Delwar Hussain, a researcher at the University f Surrey and lead authr f the study.
Researchers have created a new nangeneratr that cllects and turns the energy frm everyday mvements int electricity. It uses materials that becme electrically charged when in cntact. Think f hw rubbing a balln n smene’s hair makes it stick t each ther because f static electricity (静电). Instead f ne electrde (电极) passing energy by itself, the new device has a relay f wrkers wh shift mechanical energy, like running, int electricity. Each electrde cllects a charge and then passes it n t the next electrde. The accumulating charge creates mre energy in a prcess knwn as the charge regeneratin effect.
Hussain says the ultimate gal is t use these nangeneratrs t capture and use energy frm everyday mvements, like yur mrning run, mechanical vibratins, cean waves, r pening a dr. “The key innvatin with ur nangeneratr is that we’ve enhanced the technlgy with 34 tiny energy cllectrs using a laser technique that can be scaled up fr manufacture t increase energy efficiency further.” Hussain says.
Fr nw, the researchers are wrking n launching a cmpany that uses nangeneratrs like the ne in the study t create self-pwered, harmless healthcare sensrs. These devices culd then expand t ther sectins f health technlgy.
      12. What des the underlined wrd “rival” in paragraph 3 prbably mean?
      A. Absrb.B. Balance.C. Reflect.D. Match.
      13. What des paragraph 4 mainly talk abut?
      A. Hw the nangeneratr wrks.B. Why the device needs electrdes.
      C. When static electricity wrks in ballns.D. What the charge regeneratin effect is.
      14. What’s the feature f nangeneratr?
      A. It requires daily battery replacement.B. It mainly captures energy frm sprts.
      C. It adpts efficiency-bsting technlgy.D. It is t expensive fr mass prductin.
      15. What is the main purpse f the passage?
      A. T advertise a fitness prduct.B. T intrduce a nvel generatr.
      C. T shw hw t generate electricity.D. T explain the benefits f exercise.
