The Brwns have lived in Brnsn fr abut 35 years. When Bill was in his 60s, he helped tend a vegetable garden at their hme. They ask fr a suggested $10 dnatin (捐赠), and in return custmers receive abut $100 t $150 in grceries. The dnatins are what keeps the rganizatin running because they dn’t rely n utside financial supprt. But n ne is ever turned away if they can’t pay.
The rganizatin has served mre than 1.5 millin meals this year alne. Each week, arund 200 cars pass thrugh t pick up fd. Sme begin arriving mre than an hur befre the distributin starts, and the line can spread half a mile dwn the rad.

The develpment f small, prtable tracking tags (标签)has changed bilgists’ understanding f animal behavir, but limitatins in technlgy have left much f underwater life unresearched, accrding t Rbert Lennx, a bilgist at Dalhusie University.
Take the delta smelt, a silvery fish native t Califrnia’s Sacrament-San Jaquin Delta. There were lts f them befre, but pllutin, nn-native species and pumping t much water have made them almst extinct. T help with their recvery, scientists aim t restre the area and manage water flw, but fundamental questins abut the fish’s behavir remain unanswered, such as their migratin (迁徙) patterns and egg-laying lcatins.
Existing tracking tags are t heavy fr the tiny delta smelt, ften harming r killing them when being put in. Hwever, recent breakthrughs in tagging technlgy are ffering new insights int the lives f these small swimmers. Designing underwater trackers is challenging because water weakens signals, requiring larger batteries and making tags mre burdensme. Researchers aim fr tags weighing n mre than 2% f an animal’s weight, translating t just 0.06 grams fr the delta smelt.
Scientists at the Pacific Nrthwest Natinal Labratry (PNNL) have taken n this challenge and made energy-rich tiny batteries and better signal senders. Their experimental tags, rughly the size f a grain f rice, can transmit (传输) signals fr nearly 40 days, enabling the tracking f fish migratins ver lng distances. PNNL researchers have already begun using these tags t study juvenile American shad, an at-risk species affected by dam cnstructin.
Eric Chapman, a fish bilgist, and his team are eager t use PNNL’s new tags n the delta smelt, hping t put tagged fish int the delta by 2026. Hwever, challenges still exist, including the need fr high-frequency receivers t find signals frm small tags. Despite these prblems, new technlgy prmises t deepen ur understanding f small species that supprt entire ecsystems, ptentially transfrming cnservatin effrts.
8. What is a majr challenge in designing underwater tracking tags?
A. The size f the animal.B. The cst f materials.
C. The water weakening signals.D. The need t carry a battery.
9. What can we learn abut the tracking tags f the PNNL?
A. They are t large t be used n the delta smelt.
B. They are designed t transmit signals fr a lng perid.
C. They have been widely applied t study varius fish species.
D. They require little imprvement fr immediate cnservatin use.
10. What is the authr’s attitude twards the new tagging technlgy?
A. Dubtful.B. Uncaring.C. Unclear.D. Hpeful.
11. What can be the best title fr the text?
A. Tiny Trackers Take t the Water.
B. Tracking Devices Face Technical Difficulties.
C. A New Methd Helps Fish Species Migrate.
D. A Lng-Standing Prblem Fish Bilgists Meet.

There have been claims that left-handed peple, abut 10% f the ppulatin, wuld have a slight advantage in creativity. Divergent (发散性的)thinking — the ability t explre many pssible slutins t a prblem in a shrt time and make unexpected cnnectins — is supprted mre by the right half f the brain.
The researchers cnducted a meta-analysis — srting thrugh nearly 1,000 relevant scientific papers published since 1900. Mst were weeded ut because they did nt reprt data in a standardized way r included nly rightsies, leaving 17 studies reprting nearly 50 effect sizes.
The meta-analysis shwed that handedness made little difference in the three mst cmmn labratry tests f its link t divergent thinking; if anything, rightsies had a small advantage in sme tests. “If yu lk at the literature n the whle, the data d nt supprt any advantage in creative thinking fr lefties,” said Daniel Casant, assciate prfessr f psychlgy at Crnell University. “In fact, there is sme evidence that rightsies are mre creative in sme labratry tests, and strng evidence that rightsies are verrepresented in prfessins that require the greatest creativity.”
What has maintained the belief in lefties’ special creativity? One factr, the researchers cnsider, is left-handed exceptinalism: the idea that it’s rare t be a lefty and rare t be a creative genius, s perhaps ne explains the ther. Anther is the ppular pinin that creative genius is linked t mental illness. It turns ut lefties, wh are mre likely t be artists, experience higher rates f depressin and schizphrenia(a mental illness).
Finally, Casant said, the urban legend is a case study in statistical (数据的)cherry picking — frequent quting ver the years frm a small number f studies with small r biased (片面的)samples. “The fcus n the tw creative prfessins where lefties are verrepresented, art and music, is a really cmmn and tricky statistical errr that humans make all the time,” Casant said. “Peple generalized that there are s many left-handed artists and musicians, s lefties must be mre creative. But if yu survey many prfessins withut bias, that s-called lefty advantage will perish.”
12. Hw was the meta-analysis carried ut?
A. By testing peple in labs.
B. By studying sme previus data.
C. By cmparing scientific papers n rightsies.
D. By surveying creative prfessinals acrss many fields.
13. What did the meta-analysis find?
A. Lefties have clear advantages.
B. Labratry tests are smetimes unreliable.
C. Rights perfrm slightly better in sme areas.
D. There are bvius differences between lefties and rights.
14. What des paragraph 4 mainly talk abut?
A. The link between left-handedness and artistic jbs.
B. The evidence that prves right-handers are mre creative.
C. The statistical errr in judging left-handers’ creativity frm rare cases.
D. The factrs that keep the belief in left-handers’ special creativity alive.
15. What des the underlined wrd “perish” in the last paragraph prbably mean?
A. Disappear.B. Surface.C. Functin.D. Frm.
