Hlding my newbrn baby, I lked at the nurses rushing arund me. Little Lu was brn with a heart prblem and had surgery when he was just 48 hurs ld. In a recent survey by NPR, 26 percent f rural Americans said there has been a time in the past few years when they needed health care, but did nt get it. “In a rural area, if smene can manage their wn health better and g t the dctr less ften, then that’s a win fr everybdy,” says Janet Krpela, wh wrks fr Healthy U as prgram develpment specialist and runs wrkshps with vlunteers fr the prgram. “The vlunteers, called ‘leaders’, dn’t need a medical backgrund and they just need t be willing t d the 40 hurs f free training. Then they will g back int their cmmunities t teach patients living with chrnic cnditins hw t better manage their health,” she says.
“Over the curse f six weeks, vlunteers lead Healthy U participants in weekly meetings. Each meeting fcuses n a single tpic, like hw t make the mst f a visit t the dctr. There’s als time set aside in each week fr participants t talk abut their small weekly gals. That way participants can celebrate their successes smetimes. It’s als an pprtunity fr them t brainstrm slutins with their peers when they struggle.”
Marcia Ory, a prfessr and public health researcher, published a paper n hw chrnic disease self-management prgrams wrk. “It’s effective because mst health happens at hme,” she says. “Basically yu teach peple hw t set small gals fr healthy living. Yu teach them hw t prblem-slve. The prgram is an especially gd fit fr rural patients since it can be delivered where peple live. And the ppulatin is less, but the need is just as great.”
