But I was nt frightened ut f my wits—when my feet hit the bttm, I wuld make a big jump, cme ut f the surface. It seemed a lng way dwn. I gathered all my strength when I landed and made what I thught was a great spring upwards. Then I pened my eyes and saw nthing but water. I tried t yell but n sund came ut. I went dwn, dwn, endlessly. When I came t cnsciusness, I fund myself n the bed in the hspital.
I never went back t the pl. I avided water whenever I culd. This misadventure stayed with me as the years rlled by. It deprived me f the jy f bating and swimming. Finally, I decided t get an instructr. Piece by piece, I practiced hard and finally he built a swimmer. Several mnths later, the instructin was finished, but I was nt. Smetimes the terrr wuld return.
This went n till July. I swam acrss the Lake Wentwrth. Only nce did the terrr return. When I was in the middle f the lake, I put my face under and saw nthing but bttmless water. I laughed and said, “Well, Mr. Terrr, what d yu think yu can d t me?”
I had cnquered my fear f water.

A rbt as large as a truck mves alng the bttm f the deep sea. It eats metallic (含金属的) rck and sft mud. They travel up a lng pipe t a ship, where wrkers and machinery separate ut the rck and thrw the mud back int the cean. This is a mining peratin. The rck cntains a mixture f metals, including nes called rare earth metals. Peple use these materials t make batteries and electrnics like cmputers and phnes.
Deep-sea mining hasn’t happened yet. But it prbably will ccur within the next decade. N cuntry wns any part f the deep sea, s a UN rganizatin called the Internatinal Seabed Authrity (ISA国际海底管理局) decides wh is allwed t mine there. It has allwed 29 rganizatins t explre the deep sea and make plans fr mining, ne f which plans t begin mining in the year 2027.
Scientists and envirnmentalists, thugh, warn that mining culd destry deep-sea ecsystem. In 1989, eclgist Hjalmar Thiel carried ut a test. His team searched the seaflr f the Pacific Ocean, in a spt with lts f the metallic rcks that miners wanted. They didn’t actually cllect any f the rcks. But they disturbed the mud, just as a mining peratin wuld. The clud f mud fell back dwn ver the cean flr burying creatures living there. Up t nw, the area they disturbed has nt recvered. Signs f the search are still there. Deep sea creatures like spnges and crals have nt mved back in. That means mining culd have harmful, lng-lasting cnsequences fr deep cean life. Scientists want t understand the deep sea better befre disturbing it.
Leaving the deep sea alne sunds great, but peple need thse metals. “Mines n land are sn ging t run ut,” gelgist Steven Sclt f the University f Trnt tld Smithsnian Magazine. “Every electrnic device in the wrld has rare earth metals in it... we need raw resurces.” New energy technlgies including slar and wind pwer and electric cars rely n these metals as well. We may need t mine them frm the sea in rder t switch t greener energy surces.

9. What d we learn abut deep-sea mining?
A. It has caused terrible damage t ceanic ecsystems.
B. All rganizatins are permitted t explre the deep sea.
C. It is likely t begin within the next ten years.
D. The ISA directly rganizes deep-sea mining peratins.
10. What did Hjalmar Thiel find in his test?
A. The deep-sea ecsystem recvered rapidly after the test.
B. The test caused lng-term damage t the deep-sea ecsystem.
C. N eclgical damage was detected during the test.
D. Deep see creatures adapted quickly t the effect f the test.
11. What is Steven Sclt’ s attitude twards deep-sea mining?
A. Objective.B. Indifferent.C. Disapprving.D. Supprtive.

A study fllwing nearly 30,000 lder adults fr mre than 10 years has fund that six key healthy lifestyle factrs can significantly reduce memry lss and thse adults engaging in between fur and six f the healthy lifestyle behavirs culd dramatically reduce their risks f develping dementia (痴呆), even when carrying genes that increase their risks f Alzheimer’s disease.
“Six healthy lifestyle aspects were assessed: a healthy diet, regular physical exercise, active scial cntact, active cgnitive (认知的) activity, never smking, and never drinking alchl,” the researchers explained in the new study. Participants were classified int the favrable grup if they had fur t six healthy lifestyle factrs, int the average grup fr tw t three factrs, and int the unfavrable grup fr zer t ne factr.
The study fund that peple with fur t six healthy habits had a much slwer lss f memry than thse with fewer healthy habits. Peple with these gd habits were als much less likely t get dementia than thse with ne r n healthy habits. Thse wh had tw r three gd habits were 30% less likely t get dementia.

This suggests that the chices we make in hw we live can help prtect ur memry. The study adds t the evidence that we might be able t change ur risk f memry lss.
12. What were the grups categrized based n?
A. The participants’ age.B. What hbbies the participants gt rid f.
C. The healthy lifestyles the participants had.D. What the participants’ attitudes t factrs were.
13. What can we infer frm paragraph 3?
A. The favrable grup was happier than the ther tw.
B. Mre healthy lifestyles were f mre benefit t health.
C. Healthy habits had little impact n memry r dementia.
D Peple with a healthy diet wuldn’t suffer a lss f memry.
14. Which plays the greatest rle in reducing memry lss?
A. Never drinking alchl.B. Regular physical exercise.
C. Active cgnitive activities.D. A healthy diet.
15. What can be the best title fr the text?
A. Healthy Lifestyles Slwing Memry Lss.B. A Study Making A Great Breakthrugh.
C. A Healthy Diet Being The Best Lifestyle.D. Old Adults Suffering Frm Health Prblems.

Climate change is als expected t affect the average length f the grwing seasn. This culd cntinue t reduce the already lw amunt f crps that cme frm each hectare. Mr. Ameyaw says experts are urging African farmers t reduce the effects f climate change with a prgram called Climate Smart Agriculture. ____20____ “We are talking abut farmers being able t adpt nutrient-enriching technlgy t imprve their sil fertility,” Ameyaw said.
A. The prgram includes ways t imprve and care fr sil.
B. Small-scale farmers are the backbne f African agriculture.
C. This majr rise in temperature brings a lt f issues t African fd security.
D. Small-scale farmers in Africa are much less prductive than thse in ther cntinents.
E. There is a great pssibility fr agricultural grwth in Africa led by small - scale farmers.
