The mment is recrded in sprts histry, nt as a triumph, but as a seeming defeat. In 1978, a yung Michael Jrdan, passinate and full f dreams, tried ut fr the cllege basketball team at Laney High Schl. Hwever, he was cut frm the team fr his lack f height and skill. Fr Jrdan, this wasn’t just a rejectin; it was a challenge. Instead f giving in t disappintment, he transfrmed it int an extrardinary drive.
This early failure became the fuel fr his legendary wrk ethic. He adpted a mindset f cntinuus frward prgress, a perfect example f “nwards and upwards.” He began waking up befre dawn t practice. He wuld spend hurs alne n the curt, hning his shting, his dribbling, and his defensive mves. His cmpetitive fire burned cnstantly; he turned every minr setback int a reasn t imprve.
His jurney was anything but smth. After rising t stardm at the University f Nrth Carlina and being drafted by the Chicag Bulls, Jrdan faced tugh ppnents like the Detrit Pistns, wh repeatedly kncked his team ut f the playffs (季后赛) with their physical “Jrdan Rules.” Yet, each defeat nly hardened his reslve.
The ultimate prf f his strng spirit came after he finally led the Bulls t their first NBA champinship in 1991. This victry was nt the end f his stry. He went nwards, leading the Bulls t tw mre cnsecutive titles, achieving a histric “three-peat.” Then, fllwing the tragic murder f his father, he shcked the wrld by retiring frm basketball t pursue baseball — a new difficult challenge that shwcased his curage t start again frm the bttm.
But the basketball curt called him back. In 1995, he returned t the Bulls with the simple message, “I’m back.” He led the team t a secnd, even mre difficult “three-peat” frm 1996 t 1998, slidifying his legacy as the greatest. Michael Jrdan’s stry teaches us that it is the curage t face setbacks, the discipline t keep imprving, and the spirit t always mve frward that truly defines a champin.
      24. What was Jrdan’s immediate reactin after being cut frm the high schl team?
      A. He decided t quit basketball frever.
      B. He accepted the reasn fr his rejectin.
      C. He saw it as a challenge and became mre determined.
      D. He blamed his teammates fr the failure.
      25. Why did Jrdan shck the wrld by retiring frm basketball in 1993?

      B. He lst his passin fr basketball after winning his first champinship.
      C. He sught a new challenge as a way f dealing with a persnal tragedy.
      D. He had a serius injury that prevented him frm playing at a high level.
      26. What can be inferred abut Jrdan’s character frm his training habits?

      B. He believed success came frm nnstp hard wrk.
      C. He preferred t practice alne rather than with the team.
      D. He was ften discuraged by minr setbacks.
      27. What is the main purpse f the passage?
      A. T list all the awards Michael Jrdan wn in his career.

Laughter is regarded as a universal language, but its scial functins are mre cmplex than they appear. Beynd expressing amusement, laughter serves as a pwerful tl fr building scial bnds and cmmunicating ur psitin within a grup. T explre this, a team f researchers led by Christpher Oveis, an assciate prfessr at the University f Califrnia, San Dieg, cnducted a revealing study in 2016.
The research fcused n 48 male members f university student clubs, a setting with clear scial classes. The participants were gruped int mixes f senir members (high-status) and new members (lw-status), and their natural cnversatins were recrded. The analysis f their laughter shwed a clear distinctin. High-status individuals cnsistently prduced what was classified as “dminant laughter” — characterized by being luder, mre variable in pitch, and less held back. In cntrast, lw-status individuals exhibited “submissive laughter” —which was typically quieter, shrter, and mre cnstrained. In a fllw-up experiment, anther grup f students listened t recrdings f these laughs. Withut any ther cntext, they cnsistently identified the “dminant” laughs as belnging t individuals with mre influence and pwer within the grup.
This study demnstrates that laughter is far frm a simple, unifrm reactin t humur. It is a rich scial signal, deeply wven int the fabric f ur relatinships and status. The act f laughing, therefre, is nt just abut sharing a jke; it is a nuanced perfrmance that can bth reflect and reinfrce ur scial identity. Understanding the science behind laughter helps us appreciate its true pwer in ur daily interactins.
      28. What was the main bjective f Christpher Oveis’s 2016 study?
      A. T prve that laughter is a universal language.
      B. T investigate the link between laughter and scial status.
      C. T teach peple hw t use laughter t build scial bnds.
      D. T cmpare the laughter frequencies f different scial grups.
      29. What des the underlined wrd “cnstrained” in paragraph 2 mst prbably mean?
      A. Natural and autmatic.
      B. Cntrlled and restricted.
      C. Lud and nticeable.

      30. What des the fllw-up experiment suggest?
      A. Peple can accurately detect scial status frm laughter alne.
      B. Mst peple prefer the sund f “dminant laughter”.
      C. The funniness f a jke is largely verestimated.
      D. Grup settings have little effect n hw peple laugh.
      31. What is the best title fr the passage?
      A. Laughter as the Best Medicine
      B. The Rle f Laughter in Scial Clubs

Nature’s Hidden Light: The Secrets f Biluminescence
In the darkest depths f the cean, a fascinating phenmenn ccurs — living creatures prduce their wn light. This ability, called biluminescence, is nt just fr shw. It is a cmplex and crucial tl fr survival, develped thrugh millins f years f evlutin. Scientists are dedicated t revealing hw this mysterius “cld light” wrks.
The fundamental prcess behind this light is a chemical reactin. It invlves a mlecule named luciferin (荧光素) and an enzyme called luciferase. When luciferin cmbines with xygen, accelerated by the luciferase enzyme, light is prduced. This prcess is highly efficient and generates almst n heat. Fr a lng time, hwever, the rigin f luciferin in many marine animals was a puzzle. Were they making it themselves, r getting it frm their diet?
A majr breakthrugh came frm the wrk f Dr. Osamu Shimmura. In the 1960s, he cnducted a lng-term study fcused n a specific type f jellyfish. Thrugh extensive and cmmitted experiments, his team managed t islate tw key prteins: ne that prduces blue light and the famus green flurescent prtein (GFP). This fundatinal wrk, which later earned him a Nbel Prize, prvided the essential basis fr future research.
The questin f where luciferin cmes frm was further addressed by Dr. Steven Haddck and his team. In a 2018 prject, they emplyed advanced underwater rbts t gather and examine numerus deep-sea rganisms. Their analysis shwed that many different species shared the same luciferin. This significant finding suggested that these animals were nt prducing the mlecule internally. Instead, they were likely btaining it thrugh their diet, creating a hidden netwrk where this vital substance is transferred thrugh the fd chain.
The revelatin f these natural secrets has prfundly transfrmed mdern science. The GFP prtein, fr instance, has becme an essential tl in bilgy and medicine. By attaching the GFP gene t ther genes, scientists can nw witness and track prcesses like the grwth f diseases r the develpment f nerves in real time, turning a natural wnder int a pwerful scientific asset.
      32. What was the main gal f Dr. Shimmura’s research?
      A. T find new species f jellyfish in the deep cean.
      B. T prve that biluminescence culd be used fr lighting.
      C. T identify and separate the glwing prteins frm a jellyfish.
      D. T study the eating habits f biluminescent creatures.
      33. What may Dr. Haddck’s team agree with?
      A. All marine rganisms have the same genes t prduce it.
      B. It is passed alng the fd chain when animals eat each ther.
      C. The luciferin is prduced by underwater rbts.
      D. Sunlight triggers its prductin in the deep sea.
      34. What is a majr applicatin f GFP in scientific research tday?
      A. It serves as a primary fd surce in labratries.
      B. It helps generate heat fr chemical reactins.
      C. It enables the visual tracking f bilgical activities.
      D. It is used t create decrative lights fr cities.
      35. What is the authr’s primary purpse in writing this article?
      A. T encurage turism t see biluminescent bays.
      B. T describe the career paths f famus chemists.
      C. T explain the science behind a natural wnder and its research breakthrughs.
