"Cities are hard fr satellite navigatin," explained Ardeshir Mhamadi. Mhamadi, a dctral fellw at the Nrwegian University f Science and Technlgy(NTNU), is researching hw t make affrdable GPS receivers (like thse fund in smartphnes and fitness watches) much mre accurate withut depending n expensive external crrectin services.
High accuracy is especially imprtant fr vehicles that drive themselves— autnmus r self-driving cars. Mhamadi and his team at NTNU have develped a new system that allws autnmus vehicles t navigate safely thrugh busy city envirnments.
“In cities, glass and cncrete(混凝土) make satellite signals reflect back and frth. Tall buildings blck the view, and what wrks perfectly n an pen mtrway is nt s gd when yu enter a built-up area,” said Mhamadi. When GPS signals reflect ff buildings, they take lnger t reach the receiver. This delay(延迟) thrws ff the calculatin f distance t the satellites, which makes the reprted psitin inaccurate. Such urban envirnments are knwn as “urban canyns”. It is similar t being at the bttm f a deep valley, where signals reach yu nly after multiple reflectins frm the walls.
“Fr autnmus vehicles, this makes the difference between cnfident, safe behavir and hesitant, unreliable driving. That is why we develped SmartNav, a type f psitining technlgy designed fr ' urban canyns',” explained Mhamadi.
