Fr ver a decade, 42-year-ld Dradul has devted himself t guarding this precius ecsystem.
A typical wrkday fr Dradul begins with a 10-kilmeter mtrcycle patrl(巡逻) by mid-mrning, fllwing a fixed rute arund the lake. His bag is always stcked with essentials: binculars(双筒望远镜) t scan fr waterbirds, a ntebk t recrd wildlife species, wildlife numbers, weather, and water levels, and garbage bags t cllect rubbish. He als carries a “life-saving kit"— zanba, drinking water, a thick cat, a sun mask, and simple tls fr helping injured animals. One ntable rescue saw him and his clleagues, alng with lcal fficials, free a trapped wild Yak(牦牛); they tied rpes arund its hrns and pulled inch by inch; then they waited 30 minutes t ensure the animal culd walk and eat grass again.
Dradul is part f a 90- guardian team respnsible fr nearly 99,000 hectares f the wetland, abut 69,000 hectares f it being the lake. Their wrk— patrlling, recrding, rescuing animals, and reminding turists nt t thrw rubbish everywhere r damage grasslands— has, increased bidiversity: the wetland nw hsts 411 plant species and 157vertebrates(脊椎动物). Fr Dradul, this rle is life- changing. Befre 2014, he mved between unstable shrt- term jbs; nw, he earns a regular 2,000 yuan mnthly and feels prud t prtect the lake. “It’s nt just wrk,” he says. “It’s keeping the lake clean fr my children and grandchildren.”
Yet challenges cntinue: climate change melts(融化) glaciers and changes shrelines. Sme turists break rules, and remte areas can't be patrlled daily. Dradul hpes fr drnes(无人机) t aid patrls and mre yung peple t jin. “With sincere hearts and hard wrk,” he says, “Mapam Yumc Lake will never grw ld.”

Scientists at Washingtn University Schl f Medicine in St. Luis have uncvered a new way that brwn fat can imprve the bdy's metablism(新陈代谢). This prcess allws cells t use mre fuel and prduce heat, imprving verall metablic health. Cnducted in mice, the research pints t new pssibilities fr using brwn fat t address metablic cnditins.
Brwn fat is knwn fr its ability t turn energy frm fd int heat. Unlike white fat, which stres energy, r muscle, which uses energy immediately, brwn fat helps keep the bdy warm in cld envirnments. Being expsed t cld can increase the amunt f brwn fat, and scientists have lng suggested that turning it n culd supprt weight lss by increasing calrie burning.
“We' ve identified the bdy can burn mre energy by helping brwn fat prduce mre heat,” said senir authr Irfan Ldhi, PhD. Prmting this kind f metablic prcess culd supprt weight lss r weight cntrl in a way that is perhaps easier t maintain ver time than traditinal dieting and exercise. It's a prcess that basically wastes energy—— increasing resting energy use— but that's a gd thing if yu' re trying t lse weight.”
While human bdies can prduce fatty acids(酸)(the nes brwn fat uses fr heat generatin), they are als fund in dairy prducts and human breast milk. Ldhi said this raises the pssibility that a dietary interventin(干预) based n these fatty acids— such as a special fd r “nutritinal supplement”— culd strengthen this heat-prductin pathway and enlarge its ptential benefits.
“While ur studies are in mice, there is evidence t suggest this pathway is useful in peple,” Ldhi said. “Previus studies have fund that individuals with higher levels f these fatty acids tend t have lwer ptentials t be verweight. But since ne des nt cause the ther, ur lng-term gal is t test whether dietary r ther treatments culd be helpful in dialing up this heat prductin pathway in perxismes(过氧化物酶体) and helping peple lse weight and imprve their metablic health.”
      28. Hw is paragraph 2 develped?
      A. By making cmparisns.B. By explaining reasns.
      C. By giving examples.D. By presenting data.
      29. What wuld the authr agree with accrding t the text?
      A. Brwn fat harms metablism.B. Brwn fat aids weight lss.
      C. White fat prduces heat.D. Muscle stres energy.
      30. Which is the research's future fcus accrding t the last paragraph?
      A. T increase brwn fat amunt.
      B. T test if dietary treatments are effective.
      C. T prduce mre fatty acids.
      D. T prve the mice study true.
      31. What is Ldhi's attitude t the research?
      A. Critical.B. Unclear.C. Dubtful.D. Psitive.
      D
Mst f us rarely questin the accuracy(准确性) f the GPS dt that shws ur lcatin n a map. Yet when visiting a new city and using ur phne t navigate(导航), it can seem as if we are jumping frm ne spt t anther, even thugh we are walking steadily alng the same sidewalk.
"Cities are hard fr satellite navigatin," explained Ardeshir Mhamadi. Mhamadi, a dctral fellw at the Nrwegian University f Science and Technlgy(NTNU), is researching hw t make affrdable GPS receivers (like thse fund in smartphnes and fitness watches) much mre accurate withut depending n expensive external crrectin services.
High accuracy is especially imprtant fr vehicles that drive themselves— autnmus r self-driving cars. Mhamadi and his team at NTNU have develped a new system that allws autnmus vehicles t navigate safely thrugh busy city envirnments.
“In cities, glass and cncrete(混凝土) make satellite signals reflect back and frth. Tall buildings blck the view, and what wrks perfectly n an pen mtrway is nt s gd when yu enter a built-up area,” said Mhamadi. When GPS signals reflect ff buildings, they take lnger t reach the receiver. This delay(延迟) thrws ff the calculatin f distance t the satellites, which makes the reprted psitin inaccurate. Such urban envirnments are knwn as “urban canyns”. It is similar t being at the bttm f a deep valley, where signals reach yu nly after multiple reflectins frm the walls.
“Fr autnmus vehicles, this makes the difference between cnfident, safe behavir and hesitant, unreliable driving. That is why we develped SmartNav, a type f psitining technlgy designed fr ' urban canyns',” explained Mhamadi.
Nt nly are the satellite signals disrupted(受干扰) dwn between the tall buildings, but the signals that are crrect d nt have enugh accuracy. In rder t slve this prblem, the researchers have cmbined several different technlgies t crrect the signal. The result is a cmputer prgram that can be integrated(合并) int the navigatin system f autnmus vehicles.
      32. What is Mhamadi's research gal?
      A. T cut GPS cst.
      B. T make new smartphnes.
      C. T imprve GPS receivers' accuracy.
      D. T create new crrectin services.
      33. Why d GPS signals fail in cities?
      A. Signals reflect and are blcked.B. Satellites wrk prly in cities.
      C. Phnes lack navigatin apps.D. Users walk t slwly.
      34. What can we infer abut SmartNav?
      A. It's a cheap phne app.B. It needs new satellites.
      C. It's fr pen mtrways.D. It helps self-driving safety.
      35. What will be the result f the research prbably?
      A. A signal-crrecting prgram.B. A user-friendly type f self-driving car.
      C. A new GPS receiver.D. Special building material.
      第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

Paint a mental picture. This is what I d mst ften. I create little scenes fr grups f wrds and paint a mental picture that helps me remember them. Fr instance, the ther night I was helping my byfriend study accunting and discvered that “bk value”, “carrying value", and “net realizable value" all refer t the same thing. T help him remember that, I suggested imagining a little guy carrying a bk and a net. The bk culd be in the net r the little guy culd be carrying them bth separately. 40

What made her stand ut n clder days was her jacket— sft, cream-clred, and cvered in tiny printed cats that lked like they were napping. As smene wh enjys cats, I culdn't hld back my praise the first time I saw it: “That jacket is wnderful! Thse cats make it feel like a hug.” She laughed. saying n ne had nticed it in weeks. Judith was already a regular befre I started, s I quickly recgnized her gentle smile and the way she always picked up a cartn f milk and a laf f whle-grain bread. Sn, we'd chat every time she came in——she’ d tell me abut her three cats and hw they’ d knck ver her flwer pts, while I’ d share little updates abut schl. Just ver a week ag, she even jked, “Tell yur bss that the crazy cat lady dwn the street says yu deserve a raise!”
When I came back fr the secnd time, Judith's face lit up. “I was s glad t see yur name n the schedule again!” she said. In early March, during ne f ur chats, I mentined I planned t take a day ff later that mnth fr my 20th birthday. “Well, then I' ll have t bake yu sme ckies,” she said firmly. I'd tld her a cuple f weeks prir thugh, and s the mment had slipped my mind by the time my birthday came arund.
