A mysterius phenmenn first bserved in 2013 in a remte part f the Pacific Ocean appeared s unbelievable. Sensr readings seemed t shw that xygen was being made n the seabed 4,000 meters belw the surface.
“I tld my students t put the sensrs back in the bx. We shipped them back t the prducer and gt them tested because I thught they had given us nnsense,” said Andrew Sweetman, a prfessr at the Scttish Assciatin fr Marine Science. “And every single time the prducer came back: They’re wrking accurately.”
Phtsynthetic rganisms (光合生物) such as plants and algae use sunlight t prduce xygen that cycles int the cean depths, but previus studies cnducted in the deep sea have shwn that xygen is nly cnsumed, nt prduced, by the rganisms that live there. Nw, the team’s research was challenging this lng-held assumptin, finding xygen prduced withut phtsynthesis.
Sweetman first made the unexpected bservatin that “dark xygen” was being prduced n the seaflr while assessing marine bidiversity in an area that’s used fr mining ptat-sized plymetallic ndules (多金属结核). Metals cntained in the ndules are in high demand fr use in slar panels, electric car batteries and ther green technlgy.
The team tk sme f the samples f plymetallic ndules back t study in the lab t try t understand exactly hw xygen was being prduced. Wrking with scientists at Nrthwestern University, Dr. Sweetman discvered that the ndules prduce a small amunt f electricity. When the ndules are clse tgether, they create enugh electricity t prduce the xygen.
The discvery raises mre cncerns abut deep-sea mining. Craig Smith frm the University f Hawaii said he favred a pause n mining the ndules. Early attempts at mining effrts in the zne in the 1980s prvided a warning. “In 2016 and 2017, marine bilgists visited sites that were mined in the 1980s and fund nt even bacteria had recvered in mined areas,” said Smith. “In unmined regins, hwever, there are many species f sea life.”
      12. Why did Sweetman send the sensrs back t the prducer?
      A. He brke them by accident.B. He didn’t need them anymre.
      C. He wanted t replace them with the latest nes.D. He thught they were ut f rder.
      13. Accrding t the text, the team succeeded in ________.
      A. inventing electric car batteriesB. prducing xygen in the deep cean
      C. prving the lng-held assumptin wrngD. creating plymetallic ndules in the lab
      14. What is Craig Smith’s attitude t deep-sea mining?
      A. Favrable.B. Oppsed.C. Uncncerned.D. Unclear.
      15. What is the best title fr the text?
      A. New Research n the Indian Ocean.
      B. Dark Oxygen Was Fund n the Seaflr.
      C. It Is Imprtant fr Us t Prtect Sea life.
      D. A Mysterius Study n Green Technlgy.
