Riding acrss the wide Mnglian steppe is never easy. A single mistake — lsing equipment r a hrse stepping int a hidden hle — can mean game ver. Yet earlier this mnth, 45 riders faced this challenge in the Mngl Derby, knwn as the wrld’s tughest hrse race.
The curse cvers 1,000 kilmeters f pen plains, muntains, rivers, and sand. Riders spend up t ten days crssing the land, changing hrses every 20 miles at supply statins. These Mngl hrses are knwn t be the tughest in the wrld, handling -40℃ winters t 30℃ summers. Small but pwerful, they have changed very little ver hundreds f years and are knwn fr carrying warrirs int battle during the Mngl Empire’s cnquests in the 13th century.
But riding these hrses is extremely demanding. “Cmpetitrs endure 12-hur days at high speed. It’s significantly harder than anything I’ve ever dne,” said Anna Bden. The 30-year-ld teacher frm Lndn was ne f the fur winners f the Mngl Derby, crssing the finish line alngside Eisa Al Khayari and Khalifa Al Hamed frm the UAE, and Michael Pllard frm the USA.
The physical challenge is matched by the mental strain. “The tughest part is staying psitive thrugh highs and lws,” Michael said. “Yu’re cnstantly facing failure, but pushing thrugh makes yu even strnger.”
Riders stay in gers — traditinal Mnglian tents — with lcal herding families, whse kindness ffers cmfrt and mtivatin. Hrses are sacred in Mnglia, and riders must respect them — even when thrwn ff. “Respect fr the hrses is vital here,” Michael nted.
The race traces back t Genghis Khan’s 13th-century pstal system, linking distant lands by hrse relay. Tday, it hnrs that legacy. Rather unusually fr a hrse race, the Mngl Derby allws jint winners, which is hw fur riders crssed the finish line at the same time this year. Michael said: “We’d rather crss tgether than see anyne lse. It is really beautiful and I’m really hnred t have been part f it.”
4. What makes the Mngl Derby especially challenging?
A. Riders have t crss 1,000 km f rugh land.
B. Riders might easily lse their way in the wild.
C. Riders need t set up their wn tents at night.
D. Riders might run int wild animals alng the rute.
5. What des Michael think is the hardest thing abut the race?

B. Cmmunicating with lcal families.
C. Staying ptimistic thrugh tugh times.
D. Changing hrses at supply statins every 20 miles.
6. Why must riders shw respect t the hrses accrding t the text?
A. T avid hrse injuries.B. Due t their religius significance.
C. Because f their strength and pwer.D. T ensure faster speed during the race.
7. What des Michael Pllard’s statement in the last paragraph suggest?
A. Team spirit matters.B. Winning is everything.
C. The race is in fact unfair.D. Genghis Khan’s legacy will live n.

Fr swimmers and surfers, sharks withut teeth may sund like a relief. Yet a new study warns that this culd ne day becme a reality, as cean acidificatin threatens the sharp teeth that these tp predatrs rely n t survive.
Sharks have several rws f teeth, and new nes usually replace lst nes quickly. But researchers fund that rising cean acidity may damage teeth faster than they can be replaced, making it harder fr sharks t feed. This culd affect bth shark ppulatins and the balance f the marine ecsystem.
Ocean acidificatin ccurs when the sea absrbs large amunts f carbn dixide, lwering pH levels. By the year 2300, the cean’s pH may drp frm tday’s 8.1 t abut:7.3. Such a change culd bring serius challenges t many sea creatures.
T test the impact, scientists placed 60 shark teeth int tanks. One tank had nrmal seawater (pH 8.1) and the ther was mre acidic (pH 7.3). After eight weeks, teeth in the acidic water shwed abut twice as much damage. The teeth had cme frm blacktip reef sharks at a German aquarium, which were cllected after the sharks naturally lst them.
Accrding t lead researcher Maximilian Baum, acidificatin adds t ther threats sharks already face, such as verfishing and lss f prey (猎物). Earlier research als shwed that shark skin scales, which are tth-like structures, suffer similar harm. Mre sensitive shark species, especially thse with slwer tth replacement, may face greater risks.
Still, Baum believes sharks may adapt by replacing teeth mre quickly r strengthening them. Shark tth expert Lisa Whitenack added that even crrded teeth might still functin. She stressed the need fr future studies t test whether damaged teeth can still cut r puncture prey effectively.
The findings highlight the imprtance f reducing human-made carbn emissins. Prtecting sharks’ teeth is nt nly abut the animals themselves, but als abut the health f the entire cean ecsystem.
8. What can be inferred frm the study’s findings?
A. Sharks will evlve larger jaws sn.
B. Artificial lighting brings sharks mre fd.
C. Cutting carbn emissins helps prtect sharks.
D. Mst sharks already adapt well t acidic waters.
9. What did the shark tth experiment shw?
A. Teeth grew strnger in acidic water.
B. Acidic water dubled tth damage.
C. pH 7.3 water imprved tth strength.
D. Teeth in pH 8.1 water remained perfect.
10. What des Lisa Whitenack’s statement suggest?
A. Crrded teeth are useless fr hunting.
B. Damaged teeth need functinal testing.
C. Sharks will evlve new teeth structures.
D. Acidificatin nly affects tth appearance.
11. What is the best title fr the text?
A. Sharks’ Teeth at Risk frm Acid.
B. Why Sharks lse Teeth in Old Age.
C. New Discveries Abut Shark Teeth.
D. The Rle f Shark Teeth in Marine Ecsystems.

A recent study has shwn that different kinds f sngs bring back different kinds f memries. Sfter, acustic (原声的) music tends t remind peple f calm r even sad mments, while luder, high-energy sngs mre ften bring back fun and exciting events.

Music therapies are already used with patients, ften reducing anxiety and imprving their relatinships with caregivers.
T explre this further, researchers surveyed 233 peple aged 18 t 76. Participants were asked abut memries cnnected t bth their favrite sngs and ppular hits frm their teenage years. Previus research suggests that arund age 14, peple frm the strngest music-related memries.
The analysis revealed several patterns. Mre acustic sngs were tied t vivid and unique memries, ften invlving emtins like rmance r admiratin. In cntrast, high-energy sngs, such as Prince’s When Dves Cry, brught back memries f excitement and amusement, and were recalled mre quickly. Anther key finding was that self-chsen sngs led t mre psitive and specific memries than chart hits, shwing that it’s nt just the musical features that influence memry, but als hw much a persn likes a sng and hw familiar it is t them.
The team has als launched an nline cllectin f sngs and musical memries, aiming t expand it beynd Western samples. “We hpe this cllectin will help us better understand hw music, tgether with persnal experience, prduces such deep and meaningful memries,” said Nawaz, adding that future research will explre hw musical elements interact with persnal factrs t create meaningful memries in everyday life.
12. What is the main fcus f the recent study?

14. What is a pssible benefit f music therapy?
A. Stp memry decline.B. Imprve patient md.
C. Help patients live lnger.D. Slw dwn aging prcess.
15. Which kind f music recalls mre pleasant memries?
A. Sngs frm the music charts.B. Sngs that are sft and acustic.

Mira and Kael were adventurus siblings wh lved explring nature and always supprted each ther thrugh every challenge. Fr days, they had been preparing fr a weekend hike in the muntains.
It all started with a map Kael fund in an ld hiking magazine at the library. Tucked between pages abut muntain trails was an ld pht f a lake s blue it lked unreal — “Hidden Eagle Lake,” it said, “almst n ne knws hw t get there.” That was all he needed. “Mira, we have t g!” he said, bursting int her rm.
Fr days, they studied printuts, packing and repacking their bags, checking lists again and again. Their parents weren’t thrilled, but finally agreed: ne night, just the tw f them, deep in the Pine Ridge Muntains.
On a fggy Sunday mrning, backpacks heavy n their shulders, they left the last rad behind and began climbing. The trail was steeper than expected, rts snaking acrss the path, fg wrapping the trees like smke. But when they finally brke thrugh the treeline, there it was — the lake, glwing under the clearing sky, surrunded by cliffs and silence. N ftprints. N signs. Just wild, untuched beauty.
They drpped their packs with a laugh, quickly set up the tent, and lit a fire. As sup warmed ver the flames, they sat clse, swapping stries frm past trips, feeling like real explrers. Fr a mment, everything seemed perfect.
Then Kael saw it — a dark gap beneath sme thick vines, half-hidden by the rcks. “Lk! A cave!” he said, eyes wide. Mira hesitated — it lked damp... maybe dangerus. But curisity wn. “Okay,” she said, “but just a quick lk.”
Big mistake.
Inside, the air turned cld. The narrw tunnel pened int a wider space, water dripping frm sharp rcks abve. Kael stepped frward — and the grund gave way beneath him.
