While Deeksha wrks every day t imprve her artistic skills, her main fcus lies in giving back t animals thrugh art. “Right nw, with the mney earned frm art, I supprt peple wh take part in animal prtectin effrts,” she shares.
“I lve travelling alne and staying with the lcals. In return, I teach their children abut insects, wildlife, and the imprtance f nt harming any animals,” she explains. Lking ahead, Deeksha wishes t use her art fr fundraising in a bigger way, which wuld create awareness abut wildlife and cntribute twards animal well-being and prtectin.

Facial expressins aren’t the nly way we express ur emtins — bdy language als plays a crucial rle. The way ur bdy mves when laughing at a shw is different frm hw we mve when staying tgether with an ld friend. Althugh bth are expressins f happiness, finding cmmn patterns acrss different situatins is difficult. These patterns becme particularly challenging t define when we cnsider crss-cultural differences as well.
Researchers frm the Research Institute f Electrical Cmmunicatin at Thku University, (Japan) dealt with these challenges by cllecting bdy mvements frm different situatins, emtins and persnal styles in a mtin capture lab. Unlike previus databases that fcused n simple and repetitive actins (e.g., walking sadly, walking happily, walking angrily), and were primarily based n Western ppulatins, this new database aims t capture a wide range f emtinal bdily expressins acrss varius situatins, with a fcus n Japanese peple brn and raised in Japan.
T build this database, six prfessinal perfrmers were asked t think back t situatins that made them happy, angry, sad, surprised, fearful, disgusted (厌恶的) r cntemptuus (轻蔑的) and act them ut using full- bdy mvement. Their perfrmances were recrded using high-speed mtin capture technlgy, in which the 3-D infrmatin f mvements was captured as a vide. The recrdings were later prcessed int simple stick figure-like animatins.
Study members watched these animatins and discerned the expressed emtins. The results shwed that they culd recgnize the emtins nly frm bdy mvements, and the accuracy was as gd as past simple actin databases. Amng the emtins studied, anger and fear were the easiest t recgnize, while cntempt and disgust were the hardest.
Future research can use this database t imprve understanding f cultural differences in nnverbal cmmunicatin. This will be helpful in develping technlgy cmmunicatin tls t prmte crss-cultural cmmunicatin and understanding. This resurce is expected t benefit researchers and industries using mtin capture techniques such as gaming, film, animatin and virtual reality.
What is the uniqueness f the new study?
Its fcus n simple and repetitive actins.
Its analysis f Western and Japanese ppulatins.
Its explratin f cultural differences in bdy language.
Its transitin frm facial expressins t bdy mvements.
What were the six perfrmers asked t d?
      Change the recrdings int animatins.
Mve their bdies accurately as rdered.
Express their emtins as clearly as pssible.
Remember and act ut persnal emtinal experiences.
What des the underlined wrd “discerned” in paragraph 4 prbably mean?
      Hid.
      Drew.
      Understd.
      Cntrlled.
What des the last paragraph mainly talk abut?
The future directin f the study.
The significance f the new database.
      The impact f crss-cultural cmmunicatin.
      The advantages f nnverbal cmmunicatin.

At a summer party, msquites (蚊子) bite sme guests while luckier guests remain bite-free. “It feels persnal smetimes — like, why are they biting me?” says Lisa Baik, a sensry bilgist. Knwing what causes msquites t bite — r nt — can help researchers create better ways t stp them.
Baik’s team finds that msquites als taste the surfaces n which they land. In fact, sweat may play a big rle in whether they bite. Human sweat cntains water, salt and amin acids (氨基酸). T see what msquites prefer, the researchers placed salt and amin acids n separate surfaces. Msquites ignred the salt. And they didn’t g fr the amin acids, either. But when the team mixed bth n the same surface, the msquites bit.
In anther experiment, researchers cated ne side f a surface with sweat samples frm several vlunteers. Msquites bit sweat frm tw f thse peple much mre than frm the thers. The researchers then lked at the activity f certain msquit nerve cells (神经细胞) invlved in taste. The mre attractive sweat had a bigger effect n the activity f these nerves than the ther sweat samples. “That suggests taste culd be ne f the factrs as t why sme f us get bitten a lt mre than thers,” Baik says. “This discvery was quite exciting.”
Baik wanted t explre hw taste might drive msquites’ chice t bite r nt. Tasting requires tuch.
We use ur lips, muth and tngue t taste. Msquites d the same. They have a straw-like tube (吸管状的管子) with tw small lips. These lips have tiny hairs that respnd t tuch. Scientists then tested hw the hairs reacted t different flavrs (味道). When sugars tuched the hairs, they activated the nerve cells. Sme bitter cmpunds, thugh, blcked the nerve cells’ respnse t sugar. This type f activity blcking, Baik ntes, hasn’t been seen in ther insects. Adding such bitter cmpunds t sugar reduced the nerve respnse t sweetness and made the msquites less likely t feed.
Why were salt and amin acids tested bth separately and in cmbinatin?
T test if msquites favr salt ver amin acids.
T cmpare the effects f salt and amin acids.
      T cnfirm msquites’ taste preference.
T check if bth are in all types f sweat.
      What did Baik find exciting?
Increased nerve activity with attractive sweat.
The rle f amin acids in attracting msquites.
The discvery f msquites’ attractin t salty sweat.
Msquites’ preference fr sweat frm yung vlunteers.
What can be inferred frm the last paragraph?
Msquites are highly respnsive t mst flavrs.
Cmpunds can activate msquites’ nerve cells.
Msquites respnd t sweat using the sense f smell.
Bitter materials can be used t make anti-msquit prducts.
Which can be the best title fr the text?
The Impact f Salt and Amin Acids n Msquit Behavir
Hw Msquites Taste and Chse Their Targets
The Rle f Tuch in Msquit Feeding Behavir
Hw Msquites React t Different Flavrs
