Humans have a basic need t belng, which strngly mtivates ur behavir. Failing t cnnect with thers can lead t depressin, anxiety and lw self-esteem (自尊). There are traditinal ways t fill this need, like spending time with family and friends, but there are nn-traditinal ways as well, like activities that might nt be immediately recgnized as scial.
These are knwn as scial surrgates (替代), which can help with lneliness, islatin and scial threats, like rejectin, just as well as time spent with thers. Imagine walking int a rm filled with strangers, yu haven’t spken a wrd. Yu haven’t heard ne either. Yet smething is already being said. Yu might feel the slight pressure f a lk frm acrss the rm. Yu sense cmfrt in the way anther persn smiles—nt just with their lips, but with their whle face. Yu knw wh is cnfident, wh is nervus, wh seems pen, and wh seems clsed. All this happens befre a single wrd is spken.
This isn’t magic. It’s the mind’s secret language. It’s the silent, invisible frce beneath every human interactin, shaping ur relatinships, influencing ur judgments, and cnnecting us in ways that wrds never culd.
Lng befre yu learned t talk, yu were already a master f silent cmmunicatin. Babies just days ld can detect eye cntact. They respnd t tne, rhythm and facial expressins. They cry t signal need and smile t build bnds (联系). N vcabulary is needed.
This is the fundatin f what neurscientists call scial cgnitin—the brain’s ability t understand and respnd t thers. Our brains are built fr cnnectin. We dn’t just bserve thers: we simulate (模仿) their actins inside urselves. When yu see smene smile, yur brain activates the same regins that fire when yu yurself smile. This is the basis f mirrr neurns, a system discvered in the 1990s that helps explain hw we “feel” what thers feel.
Frm babyhd, we start building a thery f mind. This means understanding that thers have their wn separate thughts, feelings and intentins. We use this knwledge cnstantly, mstly withut speaking. Yu dn’t need smene t say, “I’m depressed.” Yu recgnize it in hw they shut a dr firmly r avid meeting yur eyes.
This skill t sense thers—t read their mental state frm their face, psture, gestures, vice tne and even silences—is the essential fundatin f human cnnectin. It explains ur talent fr strytelling, teamwrk, and caring. It’s als why misunderstandings can happen s easily.

A. They learn wrds quickly.B. They bnd thrugh smiles.
C. They ignre facial expressins.D. They rarely signal needs.
13. Why des the authr mentin “mirrr neurns”?
A. T describe brain diseases.B. T explain sharing thers’ feelings.
C. T argue against scial cgnitin.D. T prve speech’s imprtance.
14. What is paragraph 5 mainly abut?
A. Hw brains prcess language.B. Why peple avid eye cntact.
C. The rle f the thery f mind.D. The discvery f babies’ abilities.
15. What ability is a key functin f the thery f mind?
A. Predicting weather changes.B. Creating cmplex vcabulary.
C. Understanding thers’ intentins.D. Memrizing scientific terms.
