After a year f experimenting, Byan came up with the idea t use the cean currents t his advantage, and let them be the driving frce behind catching and cllecting the plastic. Instead f ging after the plastic, yu culd let the plastic cme t yu.
Initially, his idea did nt gain attentin. He decided t quit his studies and funded The Ocean Cleanup, with just 300 eurs f savings as a starting capital.
Then ne night in March 2013, things changed. He spke n TEDx abut this prject. The TEDx vide spread t hundreds f thusands f peple. In a matter f days, an initial team was built, and it raised the first USD 90,000. The prject tk ff.
Their early mdels had their share f failures — plastic slipping thrugh, parts breaking ff in the cean. But they kept at it. In 2019, System 001/B finally wrked. Then came System 002, which in 2021 gathered 20,000 punds f cean waste. Nw they launched the Interceptr: a slar-pwered system designed t catch plastic in rivers befre it reaches the cean. S far, Interceptrs have been used in Indnesia, Malaysia, the Dminican Republic, and Ls Angeles — with mre n the way.
Byan Slat’s jurney is a pwerful reminder that innvatin, passin, and determinatin can lead t significant change. His wrk t clean up the ceans has made a lasting impact n the wrld and serves as an inspiratin fr thers t take actin n envirnmental issues.

In a strawberry field surrunded by strawberry fields n the utskirts f Santa Maria, a pair f rbts have been picking berries all summer.
Each rbt, made by a Clrad cmpany called Trtuga AgTech, rlls in the field n wheels, then stps in frnt f a plant. A mechanical arm perates its sensr (传感器) amng the leaves; machine sight sftware scans the sensr data in search f grwn-up berries. If an unready berry is in the way, the rbt relcates fr a better psitin. A snipper-grabber (夹爪) munted in the middle f the sensrs extends t cut the berry's stem (茎), then carefully places it in a waiting plastic cntainer at the rbt's base.
Trtuga's rbts are designed t pick strawberries frm plants grwn n hydrpnic (水培的) tabletps, nt the grund strawberries. The tabletp system enables Trtuga's strawberry rbts t wrk by making berries easier t be picked up with rbtic arms and prtecting the rbts frm direct expsure t disadvantageus elements.
Since hitting this field last spring, the rbts are n their way t picking nearly as many berries as human pickers, and with 95% crrectness, accrding t Trtuga. Unlike a human, the Trtuga rbts dn't need breaks, can't get sick, are always ready t wrk and can pick all day and int the night. With human-wrk making up s much f a grwer's cst, the allure f a rbt's increased dependability and ptential t becme mre cst-efficient ver time is hard t refuse.
"I d think the best humans are ging t be able t utperfrm rbts at these judgment-driver tasks," said Eric Adamsn, Trtuga's cfunder and general manager. "But that's OK. It desn't have t be better than every human, it just has t be better than enugh humans."
Meanwhile, the team behind Trtuga sees agricultural rbts as mre than wrkfrce-saving devices. They see them as the nly way that an industry facing climate change, land use and chemical regulatin can adapt and survive.
28. Hw can the rbt find grwn-up strawberries?
A. By mnitring their stems.B. By bserving their psitins.
C. By analyzing the sensr data.D. By testing them in cntainers.
29. What des the authr intend t d in paragraph 3?
A. Add sme related infrmatin.B. Prvide sme advice fr grwers.
C. Summarize the previus paragraphs.D. Intrduce a new tpic fr discussin.
30. What des the underlined wrd "allure" in paragraph 4 prbably mean?

As the glbal ppulatin cntinues t expand, traditinal farming methds are struggling t prvide enugh fd. Hwever, an innvative agricultural cmpany in Cmptn, Ls Angeles, may have the slutin. Their revlutinary farming system culd transfrm fd prductin, ffering remarkable efficiency and sustainability.
It’s far frm the strybk picture f a farm — n mud, n bts, n hens pecking in the yard. Unlike cnventinal farms, this high-tech facility perates withut sil, heavy machinery, r pesticides. Instead, it relies n autmatin and advanced plant science t maximize utput. Using precisely calibrated (符合标准的) LED lighting and nutrient delivery systems, the facility prduces up t 350 times mre yields cmpared t traditinal farms while using just 10% f the water — and it can be replicated (复制) almst anywhere.
The entire prcess — frm planting seeds t packaging prduce — is autmated. Frm the mment a wrker tips seeds int the swing machine, rbts take ver. Nearly 80 plant scientists study best grwing cnditins fr each plant, wrking with ver 100 engineers wh translate these findings int hardware and sftware slutins.
“Plants are really just little sftware prgrams,” explains ne f the scientists. By studying plant DNA withut changing it, scientists can prgram qualities like grwth, flavr, and nutritin. Fr instance, expsing plants t blue light at specific grwth cycles creates leaves with a satisfying crunch at harvest. The same principles can enhance antixidant levels in vegetables by up t 40%. Since crps never cntact sil, pesticides, r human hands, they require n washing — reducing bth water waste and cntaminatin risks.
One f the greatest threats t the natural wrld is habitat lss due t farmland expansin. If successful, farms like this culd reduce defrestatin while meeting fd demands. Yet the high csts — including energy-intensive artificial lighting — may blck glbal adptin, particularly in develping natins where infrastructure is limited.
Culd this be the future f agriculture? With its incredible efficiency, minimal envirnmental impact, and ptential fr wrldwide replicatin, this high-tech farming mdel may sn becme essential in feeding ur grwing wrld — if the challenges f scaling and affrdability can be vercme.
32. What is the main feature f the innvative farming system?
A. It demands water-free technlgy.
B. It gets high yields with little input.
C. It is widely intrduced in the wrld.
D. It mixes ld and new farming methds.
33. What is the scientists’ majr rle in the prcess f the farming system?
A. They are gene editrs.B. They are machine peratrs.
C. They are system mnitrs.D. They are plant prgrammers.
34. What may limit the wrldwide spread f this farming system?
A. Lw public acceptance.B. Great farmland lss.
C. Pr prductin facilities.D. High energy demands.
35. What is the authr’s attitude tward the future f agriculture?
A. Optimistic.B. Critical.C. Indifferent.D. Dubtful.
