Althugh nwadays her images are ften used n cffee cups and T-shirts, and the mvies based n her life r her nvels are ften bx-ffice hits, Jane Austen, ne f the mst imprtant English nvelists f the 19th century, spent her shrt, quiet life away frm public attentin. Fr mst f her life she lived in a rural area f suthern England where she was brn. Her frmal educatin was limited t a shrt time at barding schl.
Austen started writing at the age f twelve, fr her family’s amusement and her wn. Nrthanger Abbey was finally published in 1818, ne year after her death at age 41.
Her nvels are all, in Austen’s wn wrds, “pictures f life in cuntry villages,” but the details reflect the influence f the great scial changes. Thrugh their herines (女主人公), readers can see hw difficult wmen’s life were during a perid when a lady’s security depended n her making a gd marriage. But wuld the marriage hurt the independence f mind? This was the key issue that Austen and her herines cared mst abut.
Instead f using a male pseudnym (笔名), which was a cmmn practice fr wmen writers at her time, Austen just signed “a lady” as the authr f her bks. It seemed mdest (谦逊的), but her writing vice was s cnfident and sharp, laughing at what was widely accepted as traditins. Fr Austen, t live was t be herself, and her quietness was indeed a lud vice against the established cnventins.

A. Scial equality.B. Freedm f thught.
C. A safe marriage.D. Peaceful cuntry life.
7. Why did Austen use “a lady” as the authr f her bks?
A. T challenge traditins.B. T fllw the trends.
