Befre becming a therapist (治疗师), I had n idea what it meant t “hld space” fr smebdy. Nw, the term is widespread n scial media and serves as the fundatin f my wrk. Hlding space is the backbne f supprtive relatinships and bridges the gap between tw peple when ne persn is in hardship.
The term “hlding space” was first ppularized by Heather Plett, a writer in Canada. In a 2015 blg pst, Plett described hlding space as “the act f being fully present with smene else, withut judgment r distractin, s that the persn can share their experiences and perspectives. This lks like creating a safe, accepting envirnment, engaging in attentive listening and ffering nn-judgmental supprt.” Research shws that hlding space can reduce stress and anxiety, enhance relatinships, and imprve mental health and well-being.
Hlding space is n easy task. It requires the patience t be calm, t delay a respnse even when smene has upset r frustrated yu. It als requires radical acceptance, a release f yur ideas abu wh the ther persn shuld r can be, and penness and hnesty abut wh they actually are.
These skills require us t knw urselves as well. “Hlding space is a frm f attunement (调和) r the ability t be aware f ur wn state f mind and bdy while als tuning in and cnnecting t anther persn,” the University f Pennsylvania prfessr Edward Brdkin said. But “hlding space” desn’t ask us t hnr thers’ feelings withut cmment r respnse. Instead it is a baseline f lve and acceptance frm which a deeper, mre genuine cnnectin can grw.
As Brdkin puts it, “It’s a way f investing in yur relatinship, develping it and enabling it t grw. In rder fr the relatinship t grw, yu need t be able t see them fr wh they really are. If yu can’t, then hw can yu knw them with any depth?”
8. Why is Heather Plett’s cmment mentined in paragraph 2?
A. T explain the definitin f “hlding space”.
B. T indicate the challenges f “hlding space”.
C. T reveal histrical facts abut “hlding space”.
D. T present the skills required fr “hlding space”.
9. What des “radical acceptance” in paragraph 3 refer t?
A. A skill t keep distance with thers.
B. An effective way t prcess yur emtins.
C. An ability t find pprtunity in adversity.
D. An emtinal reactin t the cruel reality.
10. What des Brdkin advise us t d?
A. Stp being affected by thers’ cmments.
B. Pick an investment accunt.
C. Build a healthy relatinship with thers.
D. Shw the greatest tlerance t thers.
11. What is the best title f the text?
A. “Hlding Space”: A Practice f Frgiving Others
B. “Hlding Space”: The Art f Supprtive Relatinships
C. The Pwer f “Hlding Space” t Get Out f Truble
D. The Benefits f “Hlding Space” in Changing Oneself

It’s picking seasn at Christian Nachtwey’s farm in western Germany and labrers are lading their vehicles with apples. But Nachtwey’s farm is als getting a secnd harvest: Many f the apple trees grw under slar panels (电池板) that have been prducing electricity, while prviding the fruit belw with much-needed shade.
“The idea is simple,” said Nachtwey. “T prtect the farm, withut reducing the available grwing surface and in particular maintaining prductin, n tp f that, there’s the slar electricity being prduced n the same land.” Setting up slar panels n farmland is becming increasingly ppular, as farmers seek t make the mst f their land and establish a secnd surce f incme.
Getting the right mix f crp and slar is hard, because mdern fruit varieties are finely used t particular grwing cnditins. Any change can break the balance, csting farmers’ incme if their fruit is damaged r nt as sweet as cnsumers like. That’s why Nachtwey is cperating with researchers t test which apple varieties thrive (旺盛) under the slar panels, and which types f slar panels are best suited fr the farm. T cmpare the results, sme trees are cvered with a traditinal net nrmally used t prtect crps frm hail (冰雹).
Juergen Zimmer, an expert in charge f the test, said the apples grwn under the slar panels were slightly less sweet this year than thse under the traditinal nets. But hardly any f the slar-shaded apples gt damaged in the strng sunlight that hit the regin n July 24 this year, while up t 18% f the uncvered fruit suffered sunburn that day, he said. “We need at least tw t three full years t recrd all the weather cnditins that might ccur, and lk at the utput and clr that the different varieties f tree prduce,” said Zimmer.
Researchers hpe the test will shw that tree fruit crps thrive under slar panels. This culd help prevent renewable energy prductin frm cmpeting (竞争) fr precius land with agriculture — a grwing cncern fr thse seeking t deal with climate change and rising fd prices.
12. What can we knw abut the idea f putting slar panels n the farm?
A. Trees prvide slar panels with much-needed shade.
B. Farmers grw fewer trees as slar panels cver the land.
C. Slar panels significantly decrease the utput f apples.
D. The mdel makes it pssible fr farmers t make extra prfits.
13. What may happen if Nachtwey desn’t get the right mix f crp and slar?
A. The apples’ quality will be influenced.
B. Slar panels may nt wrk.
C. The panels will be damaged.
D. Farmers may get higher incmes.
14. What des Juergen Zimmer find in the test?
A. A net can prtect crps frm hail.
B. The panels prevent apples frm sunburn.
C. Slar-shaded apples have a better taste.
D. Sunburn des mre harm t apples than hail.
15. What is the main tpic f the text?
A. Slar panels cmpete with crps fr land.
B. A farmer establishes slar panels n the farmland.
C. Slar panels prvide renewable energy fr agriculture.
D. Experts fight against climate change and rising fd prices.
