Playgrunds have been made significantly safer. There are sft surfaces t play n and all the dangerus play equipment like tall metal slides where children jumped n and ff at high speeds have been replaced by much safer plastic swings and climbing structures.
Has remving the risk als remved the fun and the challenge? In Amsterdam, the Dutch capital, lcal fficials believe s. That’s why they want t replace bring playgrunds with spaces that allw kids t play with water, climb, swrd-fight with sticks, wrestle and fall.
“The inspiratin is that children are hardly mving, which is a huge prblem,” says Rb Hfland, ne f the fficials. “They are attracted t a mre engaging screen, sitting still fr hurs. We are learning abut hw unhealthy it is that the Dutch — the sitting champins f Eurpe — are s inactive. Things need t change and it starts yung.”
Taking risks is children’s nature. Babies start t pull themselves up n furniture even befre they can stand. Older children are intrduced t a large range f activities that cme with ptential risk like wrking with tls.
“Risky play is really a fundamental way fr children t figure ut the wrld,” says Mariana Brussni, a prfessr at the University f British Clumbia. “Engaging in risky play helps them t develp self-cnfidence, resilience, executive functining abilities, as well as risk assessment.”
While it is still parents’ jb t keep kids safe in playgrunds, it is imprtant t make infrmed chices befre prhibiting risky play. That’s why parents shuld practice what Brussni calls the 17-secnd rule. S instead f telling yur child nt t climb a tree s high r run s fast, take 17 secnds and bserve hw yur child is ding and what they are able t d.
“This will prvide yur children the pprtunity t figure ut fr themselves what’s cmfrtable and what they can d,” says Brussni, adding that the mst imprtant thing yu can d is get ut f the way and just let children play.
      8. What are the current playgrunds like?
      A. They are challenging fr kids.B. They are basically free f risks.
      C. They are full f funny elements.D. They are tailred t risk-takers’ nature.
      9. Why des Rb Hfland want t bring back risk play?

      D. T inspire children t invent smarter devices.

      A. Stp bserving their adventurus kids.B. Act as a rle mdel fr less brave kids.
      C. Allw their kids t explre their ptential.D. Prevent their kids frm ding risky sprts.

In the histry f life n Earth, rganisms have relied n the light f the sun, the mn and stars t find their way and schedule their lives. While the emergence f electric lighting in the late 19th century may have been a bn t humans, it has dne much harm t the natural wrld. Amng the negative impacts f artificial light at night (ALAN), light pllutin leads migrating birds t cities with terrible cnsequences, cntributes t the alarming decline in insect ppulatins, and cnvinces sea turtles t climb away frm the water instead f twards it.
Nw, a new study frm the University f Plymuth adds anther finding abut hw ALAN is affecting cral reefs (珊瑚礁): Light pllutin frm castal cities can trick them int spawning (产卵) utside f the apprpriate times when they wuld nrmally reprduce.
Using a cmbinatin f light pllutin data and spawning bservatins, researchers are able t shw fr the first time that crals expsed t ALAN are spawning ne t three days earlier and clser t the full mn cmpared t thse n unlighted reefs.
Crals release eggs n certain nights f the year, guided by lunar cycles. If crals are spawning n different nights, inspired t d s by the cnfusin f light pllutin, it culd reduce the likelihd f cral eggs being fertilized and surviving t prduce new adult crals that help reefs t recver.
“Cral reefs are amng the mst bidiverse and ecnmically imprtant ecsystems n the planet. Mass bleaching (白化) events caused by climate change, habitat destructin, fisheries, water pllutin and ther disturbances have reduced cral reefs substantially since the 1950s,” these wrried researchers write. “The cmplete lss f crals is anticipated ver the next 100 years.”
“If we want t reduce the harm ALAN is causing, we can delay switching n night-time lighting in castal regins t ensure the natural dark perid between sunset and mnrise that guides spawning remains cmplete,” says lead authr Dr. Thmas Davies.
Obviusly, light pllutin is ne f the least cmplicated pllutin surces t fix. Slving plastic pllutin and greenhuse gas emissins will take a humanity-wide sea change t fix, but light pllutin? We just need t turn ff the lights when necessary. That can make a significant difference t the natural wrld.
      12. What des the underlined wrd “bn” in paragraph 1 mst prbably mean?
      A. Blessing.B. Demnstratin.C. Trend.D. Crisis.
      13. Hw des ALAN affect crals?
      A. It blinds new adult crals.B. It misleads them int spawning.
      C. It keeps them frm reprducing.D. It encurages cral egg hunting.
      14. Why d the researchers feel wrried?
      A. Crals are expsed t mnlight.B. Crals are likely t becme extinct.
      C. Crals have lst their eclgical value.D. Crals cause disturbances t fisheries.
      15. What is the main purpse f the text?
      A. T analyze the impact f human activity.
      B. T emphasize the significant rle f crals.
      C. T reveal the rt surces f crals’ decline.
      D. T call fr actin t reduce light pllutin.
