Needing a practice spt fr his team, Duglas sught casin (赌场) wner William Rach’s permissin t use the dance flr befre late-night dancing, ffering t cver team csts and bear all financial risk. Besides, the team had t travel the cuntry playing any ppnent that wuld agree t schedule them t g thrugh tw financial failures. They repeatedly encuntered discriminatin and racial vilence, such as fistfights with white players and fans. The players were ften banned frm htels and restaurants n the rad. A basketball histrian, Dick Engleberg said. “A lt f times they stayed in jails because that was the safest place they culd stay.”
N matter the bstacle, the Rens just kept winning. In 1925, the Rens shcked the wrld by defeating the Original Celtics, the mst dminant all-white team f their day. During the 1932-33 seasn, the Renaissance wn 88 straight games, a prfessinal basketball recrd that remains unbrken.
The Rens began t decline as its players gt lder and the tens f thusands f miles f traveling tk its tll, but in time, they were recgnized fr the imprtant rle they played in advancing black athletes in basketball. Duglas, wh had wned and cached the Rens fr their entire 25-year run, has been tday knwn as the “Father f Black Prfessinal Basketball,” which ensures that althugh the Rens isn’t a husehld name, their legacy will never be frgtten.

The arm bnes f wmen wh lived 7,000 years ag shw a surprising level f strength — even higher than tday’s prfessinal athletes. That’s accrding t a first-ever study cmparing prehistric bnes t thse f living peple. The finding suggests a revisin f histry — the everyday lives f prehistric wmen were filled with hard labr, rather than just sitting at hme ding lighter tasks while the men struggled and fught fr life.
Befre the study, there are n clear recrds describing hw ur ancient ancestrs lived. “It can be easy t frget that bne is a living tissue, ne that respnds t the difficulties we put ur bdies thrugh,” said lead authr Alisn Macintsh. “Physical frce and muscle activity bth put pressure n the bne. The bne reacts by changing in shape, thickness and ther aspects ver time.”
“Previus studies nly cmpared female bnes t cntemprary male bnes,” the researchers said, “And that’s a prblem, because the respnse f male bnes t stress and change is much bigger than that f wmen. Fr instance, as humans mved frm a hunter-gatherer lifestyle cnstantly n the mve t a mre settled agrarian (农耕的)ne, changes can be bserved in the structure f the shinbne (胫骨), and these changes were much mre evident in men.”
Hwever, a cmparisn f the bnes f prehistric wmen t the bnes f living female athletes can help us wrk ut a mre accurate picture f what thse prehistric wmen were ding. “By analyzing the bnes f living peple and cmparing them t the ancient bnes, we can start t explain the kinds f labr ur ancestrs were refrming,” Macintsh said. What they fund was that wmen’s leg strength hasn’t changed a great deal, but their arms used t be very pwerful. Prehistric wmen, the researchers fund, had arm strength 11-16 percent strnger than thse f mdern rwers, and 30 percent strnger than thse f nn-athletes.
28. What can we knw abut prehistric wmen?
A. They did tugh tasks as men.B. They were strnger than men.
C. They had lighter bnes than men.D. They spent mst time staying at hme.
29. What is Paragraph 2 mainly talking abut cncerning the study?
A. Its methds.B. Its prcedures.
C. Its ptential impact.D. Its theretical fundatin.
30. What prblem did previus studies n prehistric bnes have?
A. Insufficient sample cmparisn.B. Mistakes in sample analysis.
C. T much emphasis n shinbnes.D. Imprper methds f sampling.
31. Why are mdern rwers mentined in the last paragraph?
A. T shw their marvellus arm strength.
B. T stress labr intensity f prehistrical wmen.
C. T cmpare their strength with prehistrical wmen’s.
D. T illustrate their advantages ver nn-athletes in strength.

Bathing in the sun has been cnsidered a health hazard fr at least fur decades. It mainly cmes frm ultravilet (UV) light, which the Sun emits alngside visible radiatin. The risks UV pses are real, but a new research suggests it may be time t cnsider the benefits. Accrding t a study published recently in Health and Place, increased UV expsure appears t make peple significantly less likely t die f cardivascular (心血管) disease as well as cancer.
T cnduct their analysis, the researchers frm the University f Edinburgh used data frm ver 360,000 peple in the UK Bibank, a database. They identified tw grups mre likely t have high UV expsure: thse wh claimed t use sunbeds r sunlamps; and thse living in sunnier lcatins. T check that their assumptins abut the subjects’ UV expsure were crrect, the scientists als lked at vitamin D levels in a subset f bld samples. As vitamin D is synthesised in the skin in the presence f certain frms f UV radiatin, it is a reliable indicatr f slar expsure.
Their analysis shwed that sunbed-users were 23% less likely t die f cardivascular disease, and 14% less likely t die f cancer, than nn-users. Similar trends held depending n where peple lived. Sunbed-users, in ther wrds, lived an average f 48 days lnger than nn-users ver the 15 years during which they were studied.
The exact mechanism whereby UV light might lengthen lives is unknwn. The authrs believe part f the explanatin may lie in vitamin D’s cmpetence in bsting the immune system and imprving bne health. They als pint t nitric xide (NO,一氧化氮), a pwerful bld-vessel widener capable f reducing the risk f cardivascular disease. A prir research published in the Jurnal f Investigative Dermatlgy shwed that NO is released in skin cells that have mderate expsure t sme UV radiatin, and sunlight helps mve it int the circulatry systems. But fr nw, experts agree the study is nt a licence t stp wearing sun cream.
32. Hw des the authr present the issue in the first paragraph?
A. By giving examples.B. By defining a cncept.
C. By prviding a lng-held pinin.D. By making cmparisn.
33. What is emplyed t measure UV expsure?
A. The lcatins f living.B. The length f sunbathing.
C. The frequency f sunbathing.D. The level f vitamin D in bld.
34. Which mechanism is a pssible way UV expsure lengthens life?
A. Reducing bne density.B. Mving the circulatry system.
C. Restricting the immune system.D. Releasing NO t widen bld vessels.
35. Which f the fllwing is the best title fr this article?
A. Sunbathing: Risking Our Skin.B. UV Expsure: Benefits r Nt?
C. Sun Cream: A cure fr UV Expsure.D. Vitamin D: A Way t Lengthen Lifespan?
