A few mnths int my first year f teaching middle-schl English, I carefully structured the class time fr silent, light-dimmed independent reading. Mst f the students were buried in a nvel at their desks. But six r seven kids wuld just be windw-staring r ddling (涂鸦), the bk lying sad and frgtten befre them.
I saw their resistance t reading as bth a teaching challenge and a persnal ffence. I tried “sticks and carrts” methd: assigning mini bk reprts and giving nnreaders bad grades as punishment, creating whle-class reading challenges with pizza parties as rewards and ffering graphic nvels and magazines t encurage them. Nne wrked. Instead, nnreaders hated reading and me mre.
The prblem kept me awake. Then I remembered my 11th-grade English teacher, Ms. Germanas. She had made the whle class read The Scarlet Letter by having everyne sit in a circle and read alud each afternn. Thugh n ne enjyed the nvel, we finished it. This went against my gal f fstering independent-minded students driven by lve fr literature and human cnnectin, but I had t change. I abandned independent reading and decided t read a bk tgether as a class.
That Friday, students fund desks in a circle, each with a cpy f Of Mice and Men written by Steinbeck. I tld them we’d read alud page by page. It wrked. Gradually, nnreaders stpped staring r ddling. A few weeks later, even the mst inveterate (积习难改的) nnreader listened, fllwed the bk, and muthed the wrds.
I taught English fr anther decade after that class. Each year, althugh I was asked t spend less time n literature, mre time training students t hunt dwn main ideas f the text, I refused and kept reading nvels alud. I’ll never frget the dark, quiet classrm when we reached the tragic final pages f Steinbeck’s classic. There seemed t be very little happening in the wrld utside the windws.
      4. Why des the authr mentin his early teaching experience?
      A. T express his cmplaints.B. T aruse readers’ sympathy.
      C. T present his puzzlement.D. T infrm readers f a finding.
      5. Hw did the authr try t deal with the students’ resistance t reading?

      C. Rewarding tp students with magazines.
      D. Assigning nnreaders mre reprts.
      6. What did the writer learn frm Ms. Germanas?
      A. Fcusing n literature.
      B. Reading alud tgether.
      C. Searching fr main ideas.
      D. Highlighting independent reading.
      7. What des the underlined sentence imply?

Laura Mitchell, a cycling enthusiast, believes bikes bring kids independence and jy. Yet when teaching her 6 and 9-year-lds t ride, she had t use a schl parking lt — their neighbrhd has dangerus rads and intersectins. Nw skilled riders, the kids still can’t cycle unsupervised (无人监督的). Mitchell wrries abut rad safety, nt her kids’ rule-fllwing, admitting, “It’s chatic ut there, and I’ve had clse calls.”
America’s rads have grwn mre chatic in decades: higher speed limits, bigger vehicles, and mre aggressive, phne-distracted drivers. Thugh child injuries r deaths frm cars while walking r biking have fallen since the 1970s, the CDC says this is because fewer kids g utside, nt safer streets. This creates a cycle: drivers unaccustmed t kids drive less safely, causing mre accidents. Thus, parents are mre anxius and restrictive.
Peter Gray, a Bstn Cllege prfessr, ntes that fewer kids are utside, which isn’t just fr fear f cars. Since the 1980s, sciety has seen kids as fragile, shrinking their ability t explre independently. He argues childhd’s purpse is building independence, and withut it, kids miss ut n grwing up. Thugh he advcates fr kids’ freedm, he wn’t let his 5-year-ld granddaughter bike utside — her rad has n sidewalks and speeding cars.
Esther Walker, frm yuth cycling nnprfit Outride, says fewer kids walk r bike t schl. Outride wrks with ver 400 American and Canadian schls t teach safe riding. 20-50% f middle-schlers in the prgram have never tuched a bike. After the prgram, kids value the freedm, cnfidence, jy, and new friendships biking brings.
Sme parents advcate fr safer cmmunities. San Francisc’s Mahdi Rahimi started Safe Streets Bernal t push fr better intersectin visibility, lwer speeds, and prtected bike lanes, hping his kids can walk t the stre alne. Eric and Mary Beth Olsn’s 5-year-ld daughter Sidney was killed by a tractr-trailer in 2023. They funded the Rainbw Fund t imprve child safety after learning neighbrs als avided the dangerus intersectin.
Mitchell nw leads Our Streets, a transit safety nnprfit. She ntes parents shuld push fr safer spaces, prepare kids fr dangers, and wait fr the right time t let them explre.

      C. Kids’ independence.D. Cycling rules.
      9. What des paragraph 2 mainly illustrate?
      A. Parents’ anxiety and expectatin.
      B. Current dangerus rad situatin.
      C. Declining rad accidents in America.
      D. Present cnditin f American vehicles.
      10. What des the authr want t cnvey by the cases f Gray and Walker?
      A. Vehicle speeds must be limited.
      B. Kids’ freedm needs safer rads.
      C. Cycling t schl requires mre attentin.
      D. Kids’ explring abilities are t be enhanced.
      11. Why d sme parents establish rganizatins?
      A. T create safer envirnment fr kids.
      B. T aruse drivers’ safety awareness.
      C. T call fr gvernment recgnitin.
      D. T build up cmmunity respnsibility.

One f the best parts f being a parent has t be watching children discver the wrld arund them. “What’s that in yur hand? Is it — a ball? D yu think it will rll dwn this hill?” yu might ask yur kid. Then yu get t enjy their shuts f delight as they explre just that. Yet ver time parents may find that their child is becming less curius abut science. Why des this shift happen?
There are, f curse, a number f different factrs at play, but accrding t a recent study, this lss f interest may be partly the result f subtle (微妙的) language cues children hear.
When talking t children, many adults might say things like “Let’s be scientists tday!” (t prmte curisity) r “Yu’re such a gd scientist!” (t praise a child). But this kind f language, which fcuses n science as an identity rather than a set f activities and actins that peple d, can be demtivating. One study shwed that kids as yung as fur persisted lnger when their cue t participate in science activities was “Let’s d science” rather than “Let’s be scientists.”
But it’s als true that during adlescence, kids are actively trying n and ultimately frming different identities fr themselves. S in cntrast t its demtivating effects n yung children, identity fcused language may help teens stay interested in science. In ne study, cueing a future identity based n science (such as “scientist” r “dctr”) mtivated middle schlers t d mre hmewrk and was assciated with higher grades. That might be because if teens think f themselves as scientists, then they are willing t d what it takes t be the persn they want t becme.
Fcusing n these actins when children are yung might help them persist in hard tasks r lessns. But as lder children gain experience in these areas and start frming ideas f whm they want t becme, emphasizing future science-dependent identities might als be helpful in maintaining an interest in science.
Hw these tw versins f subtle language cues might wrk tgether has yet t be tested. Perhaps this research culd be dne by yur future scientist.
      12. Hw d parents mtivate their child’s curisity abut science?
      A. By playing ball games.B. By keeping them cmpany.
      C. By giving language cues.D. By encuraging them t reply.
      13. In which sentence, “at play” means the same with the underlined ne?
      A. This time curisity is at play.
      B. Unlucky in lve, lucky at play.
      C. The ty reminds us f when we were at play.
      D. Pause and smell a rse r watch children at play.
      14. What determines the effectiveness f language hints accrding t the research?
      A. Language fcus and kids’ age grup.
      B. Language diversity and kids’ grades.
      C. Adults’ mtivatin and kids’ interest.
      D. Adults’ identities and kids’ willingness.
      15. Which clumn is this text prbably taken frm?
      A. Envirnment.B. Parenting.C. Health.D. Lifestyle.
